Effects of different physical activities on cardiovascular functions after spinal cord injury

The impact on health, mental state and quality of life in people after spinal cord injury is enormous. Significant impairment occurs not only of sensorimotor functions. The autonomic nervous system is also disturbed to some extent, which is very closely related to the management of cardiovascular functions (and heart rate). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different physical activities on heart rate in people after spinal cord injury. The study included 30 people in the chronic stage after spinal cord injury, which were divided into 3 groups according to the neurological level of the spinal cord lesion in tetraplegics (lesion C1-C8), paraplegics with high thoracic lesion (T1-T6), and paraplegics with lesion from T6 below. Each proband completed 4 exercise tests on sports simulators (rowing, kayaking and cross-country trainer and Rotren) and peak heart rate values (SFpeak) were measured after reaching the subjective maximum load (according to the Borg RPE scale). The values of SFpeak were then statistically processed, evaluated and compared - within groups between sports simulators and between groups. Neurophysiology of the urinary system after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition that is a result of trauma generated by traffic accident, violence or falling. However, SCI may not only be caused by trauma, but also by other diseases such as - virus infection, tumors etc.. Any SCI affects the ability of the spinal cord to transmit and receive information and their further processesing. The spinal cord injury itself is followed by other complications that seriously impair the quality of life of the patients. One of the main problems is the dysfunction of the urinary system, which then does not work properly, thereby make patient's life dificult on the health and social side. Title: Applying the DRUMS ALIVE program (drumming to gymnastic balls) for people after spinal cord injury Objectives: The aim of this thesis was to prepare and apply an exercise unit of the fitness program Drums Alive which would be adapted for individuals with spinal cord injury. Another aim was to find out individual reactions of the participants on the exercise. Methods: Exercise unit was applied in 2 women and 3 men (age 40-60 years). A questionnaire, observation and interview were used to assess clients' reactions on exercise and perceived benefit of the lesson on physical and psychological well-being. The benefits were viewed from the point of participants, instructor and sport therapist. Results: According to results we may suppose that exercise strengthen and release muscles and joints. Behavioral testing of animals after experimental spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury is one of the most serious injury that leads to a decrease in the quality of life both physically and mentally. Although there is currently no effective treatment, great efforts are being made to develop new treatments. The effectiveness of experimental treatment is verified by behavioral tests performed on animal models, where rats are the most suitable ones for this type of injury. Behavioral tests are divided into several groups depending on what the testing is focused on. Locomotor tests examine the function of a locomotive apparatus, motor tests are used to determine the function of skeletal muscles not primarily involved in locomotion, sensory and motor tests test the functionality of sensory and motor apparatus and their interconnection, sensory tests are designed to test responses to sensory stimuli. Electrophysiological tests and functional magnetic resonance imaging are part of a series of special tests that use artificially induced electrical stimuli to measure muscle activity. This thesis is focused on detailed description of selected behavioral tests, their functionality and comparison of their advantages and disadvantages.
The influence of posture on grip strength in patients with spinal cord injury

This master's thesis deal with the ability to maintain trunk stability in paraplegic patients in the relation to the functional skills of upper extremity. Its aim is to determine the extent to which posture influences grip strength in these persons. It consists of two parts. The first part includes introduction of the spinal cord injury and findings of the mechanisms and functional significance of the torso in relation to posture and everyday activities. Further, it presents the possibilities of utilization and different ways of measurement of grip strength in clinical practice. In the second part, the results of the measurement of grip strength in paraplegic persons in three different positions - lying on the back and in two different sitting positions - are analyzed. The measurements were undertaken using a dynamometer. It was measured twice, always after one week period. All patients attend the standard therapy provided by the Spinal Unit in the University Hospital in Motol, where they have been also hospitalized in that time. The results refer to certain dependency of gripstrength of upper extremity to posture in paraplegic persons. Methods evaluating obesity degree in sunbjects with spinal cord injury

Name: Methods evaluating obesity degree in subjects with spinal cord injury The aim of the thesis: The aim of this work is to evaulate the degree of obesity in individuals after spinal cord injury using BMI for ordinary population, BMI adjusted for individuals after spinal cord injury and a percentage of body fat. Metodology: This is an empirical-theoretical work comparing the number of obese individuals after spinal cord injury with the use of different evaluation methods. 200 subjects after spinal cord injury (141 men, 59 women) were enrolled to the reasearch. The percentage of body fat was assessed using the BODYSAT 1500 device. BMI was calculated from body height and weight of the individuals. Results: The processing and subsequent evaluation of the measured data according to different methods found that more than half of the subjects fall into the category of overweight or obesity. In gender comparison, it was found that the majority of male subjecs are overweight or obese. On the other hand, most of the female subjects showed normal weight. It has also been found that paraplegics are more affected by obesity than subjects with tetraplegia (tetraparase). Name: First aid provided by persons after spine and spinal cord injury The aim of the work: The aim of my bachelor thesis is to find out the practical possibilities of first aid in people after spine and spinal cord injury. Next task was to find out if the people tied to a wheelchair are able to provide first aid with sufficient quality. Methodology of the work: I have used three methods of data collection. The first method to identify personal history and basic theoretical knowledge in monitored group was an survey inquiry. The second method was an uncontrolled conversation to which I found additional information. The third method of data collection was observation, where I followed the practical possibilities, procedures and first aid technique in solving selected life threatening situations in individuals. Results of the work: Based on observations, I have found that all probands are able to evaluate the state of consciousness, to pass through the airways, and are able to provide first aid for strangulation by a foreign object and stopping breathing of the child within 1 year. The use of full face mask in scuba diving physically handicapped for interruption of the spinal cord

Title: The use of full face mask in scuba diving physically handicapped for interruption of the spinal cord. Objectives: The aim is to find out if it is possible to use a full face mask during assisted scuba handicapped with the interruption of the spinal cord and to what extent these masks have a positive impact on the safety of scuba diving with an assistant so affected. Methods: Since that the full face masks are used in that way first, was chosen the method experiment in a protected environment with limited water depth of 4 metres. For finding out of contribution in field security then the method of uncontrolled interviews with experts after the experiment itself and of form the test with physically disabled and experts were detected additional information. Results: Full face masks during assisted scuba handicapped with the interruption of the spinal cord can be advantageously used and in the test group had a significant effect on the safety of scuba diving with an assistant so affected.
