The Idea of the State and Imperial Rule in the Byzantine and Western Empire in the 9th to 11th Centuries

The present thesis aims to conclude an analysis of political and administative structures in Byzantium and Western Empire from the end of the 9th until half of the 11th century. This was achieved by means of comparison. The author attempted resolve the issue of mutual relationship between the political elite and the ruler and how differences both in the Byzantine and Western Empires influenced the social system. The research included analysis of ruler legitimity, organisation of administration, social mentality and abstract ideas of the state. In the conclusion of this work, the author presented the major differences between West and Byzantium and evaluated future development of both states in regard to internal stability and integration fo political elites. Imperium: Augustus. The comparison of the historical film with reality and its didactical use

The diploma thesis deals with the life and reign of Augustus, the first Roman emperor from the Julian-Claudian dynasty, and compares it to the only one television film about this historical figure. In the opening chapter, the author analyses the history of the Roman Empire from 133 BC to the death of Gaius Iulius Caesar in 44 BC. The other part of the thesis deals with the life and the reign of Augustus who influenced the Roman Empire for several decades. The third and the fourth chapter are devoted to the analysis of the historical film Imperium: Augustus and its comparison with the primary and secondary literature. The last chapter deals with applying the sequences of this historical film in history classes in schools.

Imperium: Nerone - Comparison of the Historical Film and Primary Sources and its Educational Use

The main objectives of this diploma thesis are to describe and analyze character of the Roman Emperor Nero, the last member of Iulo-Claudian dynasty, in the historical film, which was made as a part of a series about Roman history. The first part deals with history of the Roman Empire since Gaius Octavius`s arrival to Rome in 44 BC till death of the Emperor Claudius in 55 AD. The second part gives a description of the character Emperor Nero of the Roman Empire. It is believed that it was he who had the whole city of Rome burnt. Other parts of this thesis show analysis of the film Nero, císař římský. Imperium: Nerone (TV film) 2004. It is a comparison of his character from literary to theatrical sources. The last part describes a didactic use of the film. There is a presentation of a model lesson that was created and taught in practice by the author herself. The bachelor thesis "Co-creators of John of Luxembourg's policy. The role of advisers of non-Czech origin in shaping the foreign policy of Luxembourg's first king to reign in Czech lands" focuses on the accession of the Luxembourg House to the Czech throne and their diplomacy within the Czech lands, the Empire and throughout Europe. Its main goal is to pin down the relationships and connections between the Czech king John of Luxembourg and his advisers - foreign to both internal and, more importantly, foreign policy. The most important advisers include Peter of Aspelt and Baldwin of Trier. The thesis focuses on the two in particular. The other objective is an analysis of both conscious and uncoscious tie-in attitudes of the king and his advisers towards the policy of the Přemyslids, the dynasty previously in power. The thesis will also take into account the social and cultural state of affairs of the High Middle Ages.

Roman forts in Egypt

This paper deals with roman fortifications in Egypt. The main emphasis is laid on roman fortresses on forts. Their descriptions are included in the first part of the paper. Another fortification's elements, history of roman province and mentions of forts in ancient writings, which put the forts in geographical and historical context, are described more shortly. The paper includes a brief part about roman navy too. In the second part of the paper the author tries to point out the functions of forts, development of fortification system, the architectural similarities between forts in Egypt and to find architectural parallels in other parts of Roman Empire.

Forming and development of towns in Romain Britain in 2. and 3. century

This work deals with the Roman civilian settlements which began to emerge in the province of Britannia following its establishment in mid-first century. In the introduction the work describes the characteristic features of these settlements and their functions. The first chapter gives an overview of the different types of towns and their administrative establishment. In following chapters, the work deals with the town defences, private and public buildings and amenities, including religious buildings which were part of the towns. The work describes their type, design and development in general and also examples of these structures in most important locations.

Beginning of education in Luxembourg

The thesis deals with the beginning of the first schools on the territory of Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany and France after the desintegration of the Roman Empire. It describes different types of schools and the education that they were bringing. It focuses also on the historical conditions and describes the main personalities of the period and their influence on the education. It pays a special attention to the extinction of ancient schools after the invasion of barbarian tribes and to the Carolingian Renaissance and its impact on the education. Among monastic schools it points out especially the school in the Echternach abbey, whose high level makes it one of the most important schools of that period in Europe. The thesis describes in detail the content of the education, teaching aids and methods used in this school. Finally the thesis mentions the Ottonian Renaissance and the establishment of medieval universities.
