Visitors' satisfaction with ZOO Jihlava - first versus repeated visitors
STRAKOVÁ, Aneta
Zoos are among the popular tourist attractions. However, the operation of the zoo is very costly, and their sustainability is directly dependent on attendance. It is therefore necessary to know the satisfaction of the visitors and to understand their demands. Visitor satisfaction is a key factor in repeated visits and the proliferation of good reputation.

Zoologické zahrady versus práva zvířat a jejich ekologické souvislosti
Kleinová, Michaela
The diploma thesis focused on ZOOs in relation to animal rights and environmental context. Zoological Gardens in Olomouc and Brno were chosen and compared, specifically giraffes breeding. A comparative method and the SWOT analysis were used in the thesis. Another part of the study was a questionnaire survey. The aim was to evaluate the usefulness of the ZOOs. The results showed that ZOOs are not in concordance with the philosophy and principles of the environmental ethics and animal rights, however, they contribute positively to a sustenance of selected species and thus to their biodiversity and develop ecological mindset of visitors.
Tropické pavilony zoologických zahrad jako životní prostor pro necílové organizmy
Pešan, Vojtěch
This bachelor theses deals with the topics: Tropical pavilions in zoological gardens as a living space for non-target organisms and it is focused on investigation of synatropic spider species in zoological gardens of the Czech Republic. The main aim was to complete all available information about particular pavilions, glasshouses and basement of ZOOs and the information whether are these conditions suitable for colonisation by non-target organisms. Main part was a sample collecting of free living spiders in basement and pavilions of ZOOs, which are not a part of visible part of the exhibitions. These samples were identified to the species level.  The most interesting info was whether are there present our native rare species or even species new for the territory of the Czech Republic. After identification was found, that the most common species were mainly Achaearanea tepidariorum (Koch, 1841) and Pholcus phalangioides (Fuesslin, 1775). The most interesting was a find of Loxosceles rufescens (Dufour, 1820) and Tegenaria parietina (Fourcroy, 1785) as a new species for the Czech Republic. It was also found several species, which were recorded in the Czech Republic, but which are very rare, mainly Triarieris stenaspis Simon, 1891.
Factors influencing worldwide zoo collections of lizards, snakes, turtles and crocodiles: effect of conservation status, body size and their attractiveness to humans
Janovcová, Markéta ; Landová, Eva (advisor) ; Komárek, Stanislav (referee)
There is a large number of species existing in the world; each year, however, the number of the endangered ones rapidly increases. Nowadays, captive breeding becomes an option for their survival in refugees. Sufficient population with satisfactory breeding management gives hope for survival to the endangered species (in mid-term) or even possible future reintroduction to their natural habitat. WAZA is currently the world's leading association of worldwide zoos and similar breeding facilities. Because these institutions operate as a network to facilitate the exchange of reared individuals, for conservation purposes, their captive populations may be seen as one large population characterized by its size, i.e., the total number of individuals. Such view is currently recognized by many conservationists as the so-called concept of Noah's Ark. The space on the Ark is limited, therefore it is needed to heed the characteristics of the species aboard to maximize the conservation potential. Many factors influence the presence of species in zoological gardens. Following previous studies we selected some factors that may be important, i.e., body lenght, taxonomy, and IUCN status. Analysis of these factors among the main reptile clades shall reveal the pattern of reptile composition in worldwide zoos. One of the factors...
Attitudes of zoologists and general public on breeding of different groups of mammals kept in zoo
Vágnerová, Kristýna ; Trnka, Radek (advisor) ; Karadžos, Alexis (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to answer the question how differ the attitudes of zoologists and general public on suitability of various mammals kept in zoos. The theory of cultural stereotypes is theoretical starting point where i assume that evaluation is influenced on the basis of cultural stereotypes among general public (n = 100) versus expert evaluation of graduates of zoology (n = 60). Questionnaire with a scale enumeration concerning the assessment of the suitability of selected groups of mammals for breeding in zoos was used as the main data collection instrument. Results of the survey showed that experts evaluated the suitability of mamals for breeding in zoo more positive than laymens in general. According general public were equines and rodents rated as relatively unsuitable for breeding in zoos in comparison with expert evaluation. Elephant, orangutan, platypus, tiger, bear and cheetah were rated as relatively suitable for breeding in zoos by general public against expert evaluation. The possible interpretation might be that these mammals belong to the most popular and therefore respondents want to experience personal contact with them. Statistical testing found no gender differences in the rating. Key words: zoos, public attitudes, zoologists' attitudes, mammals, cultural stereotypes,...

Two faces of ZOO - perception of zoos from the view of their supporters and opponents
Tempírová, Lenka ; Trnka, Radek (advisor) ; Šusta, František (referee)
Two faces of ZOO Perception of zoos from the view of their supporters and opponents The main topic of this thesis is a role of zoological gardens in the modern society, especially their importance to conservation of biodiversity as well as to progress in public education. I was interested not only in the opinions and the attitudes of the supporters of zoological gardens, but also in views of their opponents as the opposite side. In the case of the opponents I wanted to reveal if their criticism of zoos is based on negative emotions (bad feeling from breeding animals in captivity and thinking about their rights to freedom) or rise from real inadequacies (for example bad living conditions of animals). So in the theoretical part of the thesis I was concerned about contributions of zoological gardens in many ways as well as about their limitations, mostly mentioned by their opponents. To be more precise in drawing conclusions I made my own empirical research which was based on questionnaires and interviews with directors of certain zoos in the Czech Republic. The main aim of my research was not only a usual opinion poll, but also a detection of differences in opinions and personal characteristics between supporters and opponents of zoos. I also wanted to find out which aspects of zoos are highly...
Zoo here and there: Observation of Visitor Behavior in the Prague and Reykjavík Zoos
Vysopal, Ondřej Věnek ; Stella, Marco (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
In my diploma thesis I deal with the perception of the modern zoological gardens by observing visitor behavior. The thesis captures the emergence of zoos in Europe in the late 18th and 19th century gardens and their role as a source of knowledge and as a representation of the relationship between man and animal. Based on the observations of visitors I present two European zoological gardens - Prague Zoo and Reykjavík Zoo & Family Park - as spaces reflecting a certain culture. Reykjavík as a place with a simple mission dedicated for the education of small children in several fields, not only in zoology, and Prague as a complex universe, a merge of several different places with different meanings, such as a place for education, relaxation, photographing, standing against the contemporary western critical theories of zoological gardens. Key words: Zoological gardens, visitors, animals, humans, culture, looking at animals, behavior of visitors, Reykjavík, Prague, Iceland
Animal from the Garry Winogrand´s point of view
Tvarůžka, Václav ; DVOŘÁK, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ledvina, Josef (referee)
Work is an introduction to the work of Gary Winogrand and also analysis of the issue of limited possibility of looking which manifests in the particular problem, of impossibility of looking at animal. Work is based on essay from John Berger who concludes this communication problem trough the rise of capitalism and lost connection between human and animal creature. This thing is also connected to the phenomenon of zoological garden. Work is set in this certain context and further it is analyzing the photographs from Winogrand himself and also other authors, which are dealing with affinity problems like for example problem of authenticity (in the photography with the motive of animal), which is represented by Joan Fontcuberta. Or the problem of anthropomorphization (Walt Disney).
