How to invite men? Project Patron - the case study of engaging men in the areas of civic, public and private life which needs their deeper participation Abstract The support of engagement of men in the areas of civic, private and public life which showing the lack of their involvement becomes a topic in the last decade on the level of EU and some national states. But there is just little social research focused on the practical ways how to support the engagement of men in these areas. This paper offers the view from perspective of the studies of civil society - which is especially focused on the motivations to volunteering - combined with the perspective of the studies of men and masculinities. The core of this paper is a case study of the project Patron in which the adult men creates friendly-based relationships with the young men from the institutional care and help them to manage the leaving of this care to the "real life". The aim of this research is analyze the motivation of these men which leads to their participation on this project - mainly in the relations to the experience of manhood and masculinity. Petr Pavlík, Ph.D. Praha 2013 ABSTRACT This work is an attempt to contribute to the development of men's studies as a relevant academic field, which still does not have sufficient background in the Czech Republic. It captures work of the most visible so-called men's organization in CR - the League of Open Men (LOM). Qualitative content analysis based on feminist tradition includes data collected from interviews and thematic articles of LOM's representatives, and especially data from my own interview with Václav Šneberger, one of the organization's founders. The aim of analysis was to clarify ideological basis, values and theoretical concepts which LOM implicitly uses, to explore its relationship to feminist movement and so-called women's organizations, and also to find out its understanding of masculinity/ies and the way in which LOM discursively works with this concept of gender. TITLE: The Fictional Man: Ned Kelly in Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang in Comparison with Older Portrayals AUTHOR: Adam Prentis DEPARTMENT: Department of English Language and Literature SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Petr Chalupský, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The thesis concerns itself with the analysis of various personality aspects of the protagonist of Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang (2000) - Ned Kelly. Albeit a historical figure, Ned Kelly is approached as a fictional character with focus placed on his symbolic status of Australian nationality, myth and manhood, and on the literary means that point to this. The separate aspects are placed in an evolutionary context through comparisons with older portrayals of the same character - in Max Brown's Australian Son (1948) and J. J. Kenneally's The Complete Inner History of the Kelly Gang and their Pursuers (1929), all of which use a heroising approach to the man. The work shows that Ned Kelly may be perceived in many complex ways, with further possibilities for analysis suggested. Comparing the three books, it is found that although considerable unifying tendencies and moments exist, some aspects have a significant difference in focus or emphasis. Albeit a historical figure, Ned Kelly is approached as a fictional character with focus placed on his symbolic status of Australian nationality, myth and manhood, and on the literary means that point to this. The thesis looks into the ways in which Ned Kelly's manhood status is constructed and maintained, and into the fictionality derived from an absence of hard evidence and conflicting testimonies concerning the protagonist's life and deeds. Organizations of men's movement in the Czech Republic (empirical profile and typology)

The central theme of this diploma thesis are male organizations and although some of them are already long decades old their presence is quite unknown phenomenon among majority of people, so much they stand behind their female counterparts. Therefore I decided to introduce male organizations and areas of their interest, the main goal of this diploma thesis is to create a typology of male organizations in the Czech Republic. The work issues from specification of the terms "masculinity" and "male organizations of civil society", carried out on the basis of publicized theoretical knowledge and my own experience. I begin with organizations of the so-called traditional type to pass on those that are considered to be the so-called new ones and their origin is closely associated with woman's emancipation caused by an expansion of feminism in the last decades of the past century. In connection with the existence of these new organizations it was discussed a concept of the so-called new masculinity for the first time. In the part of my work related to the goal's fulfillment I introduce all male organizations in the Czech Republic and the basis of analyze I create their typology. Male emancipation as the process of seeking identity

In this work I would like to present the concept of male emancipation as the process of liberation of men from the pressure of culture stereotypes about men and masculinity. Male emancipation is also the inner process of seeking identity which is a synthesis of reflection of sex as a biological predisposition and gender as a culture construction. The concept of male emancipation is the answer to the recent crisis of male identity and is represented with different emphasis in different faces of men's movements. I created the basic typology of these movements and described their "emancipatory potential". As the opposition to feminists ideal types of new man or androgyne I described the realistic type of emancipated man who is not trying to achieve a synthesis of characteristics typically and traditionally considered as masculine or feminine but rather to achieve a compact, consistent and original personality. In the last part of my work I present results of my research "What do men say?" where I analyzed the statements of men who came to the men's groups of the Czech organisation the League of Open Men. As a result I described four basic motivational categories which motivate men to visit these groups and the description of some basic topics which men solve in these groups.

Masculine Identity in Chuck Palahniuk's Early Novels

This MA thesis deals with the masculine identity of the three main male characters of Chuck Palahniuk's early novels Fight Club, Survivor and Choke. It consists of two parts. The first theoretical part briefly explores anthropological and sociological notions of masculinity, with the focus on the manhood in the contemporary USA. As such it serves as the theoretical basis for the second part of literary interpretation. There the masculine identity of the three main characters is discussed. As all the three characters experience the same development of masculine identity, the interpretation advances along this progress. Its stages are identity crisis, turning to the traditional male strategies, rejecting those strategies and searching the basis of one's identity in a personal relationship.

Father and Fatherhood as a Sociocultural Phenomenon

The thesis points out the important role of fatherhood in the lives of men. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, I draw from available literature, journals, websites and sociological researches, and I focus on fatherhood throughout history, knowledge of male identity, the concepts of father in different scientific disciplines and typology of fathers. The second part consists of a qualitative survey conducted in open and indoor playgrounds in České Budějovice. By means of anonymous interviews with both fathers and mothers I examined how fatherhood affects and completes male identity and how important it is for men. Then I evaluated and compared these interviews.

Different positions and roles of men and women in society

The Bachelor thesis deals, as its name suggests, with the diferent roles of men and women in the society. The theoretical part of this work is thematically focused on the diferences of the individual sex and the problems of the gender roles, along with the disorders of gender. This part also deals with diferent roles of men and women in the labour market. These diferences are described as diferences of average wages, jobs, profesional development and segragation of work. The practical part of the Bachelor thesis includes own research conisting of opinion of the society on the selected questions relating to problems of gender. The technique of an questionnaire was used to obtain the data. The obtained data were analysed later on and aranged into tables and graphs.
