Modelling ethanol production in simultaneous equations model of global food demand and supply

This thesis conducts an econometric analysis for the relationship between food price and ethanol production. A system of simultaneous equation models for the demand and supply for food are estimated, paying attention to the effect of ethanol production. The two-stage and three-stage least-squares estimation methods are adopted, which explicitly account for endogeneity in the system. Using annual data from 1981 to 2020, it is found that the ethanol production has little economic impact on food price. This may be closely related with inelastic demand and supply with respect to price that have been found in this study, where exogenous shocks such as an increase of ethanol production may have small effects on price. Analysis of meat demand in the Czech Republic

Meat and meat products form the highest share of Czech household expenditures for food. This thesis offers a complex view on the Czech meat market and studies in detail the determinants of meat demand. A review of the most frequently used demand models is included, from which the least squares log-log model is used for empirical analysis. The core of this thesis is the estimation of price and income elasticities of demand for various types of meat based on statistical data of household accounts from the years 2000 - 2012. The estimates are, with the exception of the price elasticity for beef, which equals 0.13, consistent with previous studies. Within the examined period, households manifest unitary income elasticity and own price elasticity of demand for meat equal to -1.2. The temporal evolution of elasticities varies for different types of meat. Important socio-demographical aspects influencing the demand for meat, such as age, education, whether the household is led by a female, and others, are also analysed.
Viscous and elastic properties of soft tissue "in situ"

Title: Viscousand elastic properties of soft tissue"in situ" Goals and methods: The aim of this thesis is to measure the viscoelastic properties of human soleus muscle and Achilles tendonin vivo and post mortem in situ. It is a pilot study that uses myotonometry as the method of measurement. Based on the response of connective tissues on deformation made by tip of myotonometer, resp. its viscoelastic properties, curves in graphsare created. Three main described parameters of thecurveare steepness, deflection and its surface area. Main goal of the experiment is to compare properties of different types of tissue and their potential differences while denervated or innervated. Results of this study may help with better understanding of the soft tissues behavior in response to manual therapeutic contact. The study also describes the differences between in vivo and post mortem tissue properties that may be help further studies which use post mortem tissues to predict in vivo behavior. Results: Soft tissues in vivo have higher viscosity. In comparison, post mortem tissues have significantly higher stiffness and energy dissipation than in vivo. Efficacy of post-isometric relaxation technique on muscle tissue and its viscoelastic properties after physical activity

Title: Efficacy of post - isometric relaxation technique on muscle tissue and its viscoelastic properties after physical activity. Objective: This study is a pilot analytical and comparative study. The first aim of this thesis was evaluation of the effect of post-isometric relaxation technique on properties of muscle tissue after physical activity. The second aim of this thesis is to present a literature review regarding this topic using literature available. Methods: This study took place in the laboratory of kinesiology at UK FTVS. Six participants were measured prior to Wingate test, after Wingate test and after post- isometric relaxation or rest. Experimental lower extremity was applied post-isometric relaxation technique and the control lower extremity was not. Muscle tonus of the soleus muscle was measured with myotonometric device developed by Šifta. The final data were processed in the special software in Matlab and the obtained hysteresis curves were used for results analysis. Results: This study had three hypotheses and none of them was confirmed during the measuremets. Abstract: Implicit constitutive theory provides a suitable theoretical framework for elastic materials that exhibit a nonlinear relationship between strain and stress in the range of small strains. We study a class of power-law models, where the nonlinear dependence of strain on the deviatoric part of the stress tensor and its trace are mutually separated. We show that these power-law models are capable to describe the response of a wide variety of beta phase titanium alloys in the small strain range and that these models fit available experimental data exceedingly well. We also develop a mathematical theory regarding the well-posedness of boundary value problems for the considered class of power-law solids. In particular, we prove the existence of weak solutions for power law exponents in the range (1, ∞). Finally, we perform computer simulations for these problems in the anti-plane stress setting focusing on the V-notch type geometry. Tax reforms and inter-temporal shifting of corporate income: evidence from tax records in Slovakia

We use administrative tax return data for all corporations in Slovakia to demonstrate how policies facilitating inter-temporal income shifting result in elevated corporate income tax (CIT) elasticity estimates. Our strategy exploits kinks in the statutory tax schedules and policy reforms of tax carry-forwards. If inter-temporal shifting is neglected, our bunching estimates imply CIT elasticity of up to 0.65, suggesting a highly sensitive tax base with respect to the marginal tax rate. However, we show that CIT elasticity drops at least 21.2-49.1% when we remove the inter-temporal shifting component. This correction significantly reduces the estimated marginal excess burden of corporate taxation.
Characterization of titanium laser welds

Butt welding of commercially pure titanium Grade 1 and Ti6Al4V alloy sheets using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser KLS 246 - 102 LASAG were carried out to determine optimal values of pulse energy and pulse length to create completely penetrated weld. Surface peak power density of about 3.105 W.cm−2 was found as an optimal value. Weld dimensions, both face width and penetration depth, are found to be proportional to increasing energy and decreasing pulse length. Gentle sagging and root penetration were revealed by means of contact surface profilometry. The nanohardness tests on transverse cross-sections detected approximately 50% higher hardness in the fusion zone than in the base material.\n
Implicit constitutive relations in lower dimensional models in continuum mechanics

We study implicit constitutive equations and their possible applications in the description of the elastic and plastic response of isotropic solids. We develop a thermodynamic framework for the elastic and plastic response of isotropic solids and we perform simple numerical simulations of the elastic as well as plastic response of solids (beams) using implicit constitutive equations. 1
