Radoslav P a s s i a Aesthetics of Periphery and Border (To Selected Aspects of Periphery and Border Phenomenon in Slovak Literature of the 20th Century in Central European Context) Abstract The dissertation deals with selected aspects of periphery and border phenomenon in Slovak literature of the 20th century in Central European context. In the preliminary chapter Border the author focuses particularly on selected texts by Central European writers which are thematically set in the Eastern Carpathians. This radically multiethnic region is considered to be one of the relatively independent cultural areas of Central Europe by the author. Narrative perspectives of a stranger, outcast, migrant in combination with the themes of border and conflict between vernacular and alien are characteristic for the literary image of the Eastern Carpathian border area in the 20th century. The author looks at the way the literary appearance of this area is ideologically deformed in the works of individual authors. The writers (mainly Czech and Polish) who do not come from the Eastern Carpathian border area use characters of strangers to reflect on the relationship between the modern and the traditional. Autochthonous authors often make use of the stranger characters to depict the area's self-colonial efforts in relation to the...
Mexico's dual approach at the southern border : clash of realism and humanitarianism
Vrchota, Petr ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
In my thesis I will show the case of Mexico, a country that is struggling hard to fulfill its principles of national security - one of the most characteristic features of Mexico's policies. Simultaneously, Mexico is making efforts to fulfill human rights' obligations of both its nationals and foreigners. Increasingly especially since the turn of the millennia, the United States has been fortifying its border with Mexico with the aim to prevent the Mexican and other immigrants reaching the United States illegally. Yet, hard-line border controls and migration-related policies have not been adopted solely by the United States, but also Mexico has played a dominant role in fortifying its border areas, especially along the southern border with Belize and Guatemala. My research questions would then focus on what is driving Mexico to adopt dual approach towards Central American migrants along Mexico's southern border, and why is Mexico balancing between realistic principles of national security and human rights' obligations, which has espoused by signing and ratifying international conventions?
The importance of changes of administrative borders in the formation of inner peripheries on the territory of Czechia since the mid-19 th century
Burda, Tomáš
The dissertation thesis covers the theme of the relationships between the changes of administrative borders and the peripheriality of space on the territory of Czechia since the mid-19th century. The author first defines the fundamental objectives and discusses the bases of the research of changes of administrative borders in Czechia in the process of polarization of space, as well as the general background and approaches to the issue of borders and regions, while emphasizing the concept of inner peripheries and internal borderland. The thesis attempts to contribute to the debate regarding: the importance of administrative borders of regions of different scales in the polarization of space; identification, analysis and evaluation of areas that changed their administrative affiliation at the level of mesoregions (regions) and microregions (districts) on the territory of Bohemia and the Vysočina Region in particular; evaluation of the degree of stability of administrative regions and stability of centers of these regions; and to assessment of the importance of the borders of regions in the context of problems associated with the development of peripheries. Discussion of changes in administrative borders and related development of territorial administration and local government places focuses on the...
Wall Construction on U.S.-Mexican Border during the first two years of the Trump administration: political rhétoric and reality
Křížková, Marie ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Drhlíková, Eva (referee) ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the problem of building a wall on the US-Mexican border during two years of Donald Trump's presidency (January 20, 2017 - January 20, 2019). In particular, it analyzes the rhetoric of Trump's promise to build a wall and compares it to the reality of the US-Mexican border. The thesis finds out why the reality at the border after two years does not correspond to the previous rhetoric, to what extent these promises have been fulfilled and to what problems the construction of the border wall has encountered. The biggest problem was the financing of the wall, when Congress refused to approve the money and this escalating situation led to a shutdown. It is extremely important for Democrats, with Nancy Pelosi and Charles Schumer, that they stayed together in the shutdown and showed how hard it would be for Trump to reach his plan. Eight wall prototypes were built on the border in 2017 for testing. No wall based on these prototypes has been built or funded by Congress to date. On the contrary, in February 2019 they were demolished and removed.
Border Barriers in the Modern World: Factors Contributing to Barrier-building Practices in the post-1945 World
Mičko, Branislav ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Bahenský, Vojtěch (referee)
The number of border barriers has increased rapidly in the last decades. These barriers appeared between the wealthy and the poor, between the stable and those ridden by civil wars, between traditional military rivals and even between partners in the integration process. This suggests that a complex theory is necessary to explain the phenomenon of border barrier building. The presented work aims to provide an answer to the question of why states build border barriers by the use of Schmitt's theory of state based on nomos, sovereignty and political unity in interaction with globalization. This theory served as a framework for establishing the independent variables, namely challenges to land-appropriation, challenges to sovereignty from military threat, challenges to sovereignty from cross-border ethnic group, challenges to political unity from irregular mass migration and finally challenges to political unity from terrorism. These were then tested using regression analysis with number of border barriers constructed by a state serving as a dependent variable. The results suggest that states that often face challenges to land-appropriation, to sovereignty coming from politicised cross-border ethnic groups and to political unity from irregular mass migration build more border barriers than those that...
The line borders
Kazdová, Kristýna ; Sikora, Piotr (referee) ; Mikyta, Svätopluk (advisor)
The difference in perception of reality is caused by the language that creates the terminology for naming formal entities; the definitions of these concepts are abstract. This creates both a collective inconsistency and an incongruity between content and form. In consequence, the question of the objectivity of attributing an abstract image to specific material should be asked. Elementary elements of the drawing expression as a line/picture are primarily perceived in formal boundaries. The goal of my work is to move beyond these boundaries.

The work aims to artistically compile perception of maps as a fact, what let us think about The world - how we know it from the map. I work with data, which I gain by displaying technology – eye tracking, which helps me to record track of moving eyes during watching any kind of picture. The observations will be people from different places such a place of stay etc. Gained data I am going to use as a study, which I will componate to maps and different vizualizations of world, countries etc. "Where i have not ever been before, it does not exist" – is idea of percepting world, wich I also work with on that project. Study will contain all aspect of perceiving maps and systematicly shown world related to the person, his memories to that place, fyzical contact and his impact in his scale person versus a the world.
