The topic of the atmosphere in the teaching of geography at secondary schools (on the example of the global circulation of the atmosphere)
Dudařová, Anna ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Navrátilová, Denisa (referee)
Absctract The bachelor thesis is devoted to the topic of general atmospheric circulation and its teaching at secondary schools. The aim of the thesis is to research the teachers' approach to teaching this topic and to analyse textbooks and atlases that teachers can use in their teaching. Another objective is also to create teaching material that can facilitate teachers' preparation for classes dealing with the mentioned topic. In the first part of the thesis, the reader is introduced to the topic of general atmospheric circulation itself, a summary of previous research and a presentation of the view of the topic from the point of view of Czech educational documents. In the second part, both researches and their results are presented, i.e. the content analysis of textbooks and atlases and the questionnaire survey in which 63 grammar school teachers participated. On the basis of these researches, teaching material was created, which is the subject of the last part of the thesis.
Misconceptions in teaching geography in the topic of planetary geography
Kalicherová, Tereza ; Šobr, Miroslav (advisor) ; Cimová, Tereza (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the nine most common misconceptions in planetary geography, which were selected based on an analysis of previous research on this topic and subsequently tested on primary school students. The theoretical part focuses on the reasons for the emergence of misconceptions in general and in planetary geography, followed by a more detailed analysis of the most common misconceptions. For each of them it is described how the planetary phenomenon works in reality, and then how the misconception is most likely to arise and why. The practical part consists of the development of a didactic test and the evaluation of data collected from 292 students from four lower secondary schools. The main aim of the bachelor thesis was to check whether the most common misconceptions in planetary geography are also found among students in Czech schools and to what extent. A sub-objective was to find out how misconceptions vary across grades and whether the degree of misconception depends on the elapsed time before which the material was discussed. The results showed that even Czech primary school students have many misconceptions about planetary phenomena. In most cases, however, they performed better than respondents in previous research analysed for this paper. Furthermore, the results did not...
Entrace knowledge and ideas about the regions and regional cities of the Czechia among pupils in the 6th and 7th grades of primary schools.
OLIVA, Petr
This thesis deals with the entrance knowledge and ideas of 6th and 7th grade elementary school students about regions and regional cities of the Czechia. The main aim of the thesis is to map and reveal the real level of knowledge and ideas of pupils with the help of a research questionnaire, which was mainly focused on the orientation of pupils in the blind map, knowledge test and self-assesssment of pupils based on personal likes or dislikes for individual regions and regional cities of the Czechia. A total of 356 pupils participated in the research. All the resulting data obtained from the questionnaires were further evaluated and discussed in the analytical part of the thesis. Furthermore, the differences in the results based on the observed parameters of this thesis were investigated. These represented knowledge differences between classes, gender and type of schools, according to their location. The analytical part then leads to the practical part, which brings concrete suggestions and topics through the created teaching materials that can be used in practice during geography lessons. The education materials, which contain the practical part of the work, are created on the basis of research results and are aimed at anchoring and developing pupils knowledge and awareness of the individual regions and regional cities of the Czechia.

The book Rethinking Maps summarizes the findings of researchers, according to which the map — its structure and formal appearance is full of symbols, categories and explanations based on the field of cartography — is an artificially created social construct. The way we browse maps is crucial to our perception of the space that surrounds us. If we want to be geographically related to a certain place, we convert its location and the route that needs to be taken to the destination in a certain scale. When we say that "something is there," we describe a space, which identity is defined only by a carefully structured graphic symbols in a precisely specified grid and scale. In this context, Denis Wood (The Power of Maps) notes that maps do not only function as a reflection of neutral reality. The world is recorded on them from a certain point of view, and apart from being tools of communication, they can also serve as a tools of power. In today's context, that means, for example, that most local services are defined by the interests of their authors, the paid advertising of the companies or the interests of the corporations to which the application belongs. Bachelor thesis Rethinking Rethinking Maps tries to develop an approach that could partially redefine these principles. Formal representation is not fundamentally different from similar applications offered by internet map services, but works differently in user access and attempts to modify the navigation service so that in the final state, the content of the map is formed by the users themselves. The user experience does not end with a straight highlighted trajectory, the path is not determined by the easiest and fastest way to overcome the route from start to finish. Validation of given locations is generated on the basis of user knowledge and the application connects routes into circuits through which the places can be related in their common geographical, historical or social context forming the identity of individual localities — places are not defined by a red highlighted route, but by various forms of content that is generated by the users themselves. The goal is to create a tool that would ideally help shape a community that not only consumes the world, but also experiences it and tries to enroll it differently than by the number of stars or the ratio of coffee acidity.
Map making in geography education from teachers' perceptive
Djadik, Martin ; Krajňáková, Lenka (advisor) ; Kuberská, Markéta (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on map making during lessons, which, according to previous research, happens only rarely, even though it has the potential to comprehensively develop pupils. The main objective of the thesis is to characterize in more detail map making during geography lessons at Czech lower-secondary schools and to identify which factors prevent teachers from incorporating this activity more frequently into their lessons. The theoretical part of the thesis describes map skills, including the skill of map making, which is subsequently characterized in detail. A crucial part is the classification of map types, which can be made during school lessons, based on Czech and foreign literature compiled by the author. The theoretical part also summarizes the occurrence of map making in curriculum frameworks, the benefits of map making, teachers' attitudes towards this activity, and the level of pupils' map making skills from the perspective of their teachers. The data for the empirical part of the thesis were obtained through a questionnaire survey, in which 253 geography teachers from lower-secondary schools participated. They filled out a questionnaire containing closed and open-ended questions that were based on academic literature. The research findings showed that the majority of teachers...
Širým světem of Stanislav Nikolau. Geographical magazine 1924 - 1944
Ulipová, Jana ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the magazine "Širým světem", which was managed by Stanislav Nikolau (1878-1950), a prominent figure in the public life of the First Czechoslovak Republic. Based on a historical analysis of primary sources, placed in context by the study of secondary literature, it completes Nikolau's personality including his views orientation that is based on the ideas of the nationalist right-wing, with a strong anti-Communist orientation, through the leadership of the Czech fascist movement Vlajka to the anti-Semitic rhetoric. The thesis presents his rich activity in the pedagogical, journalistic, and editorial field and does not omit his professional work that was always closely intertwined with geography. However, it is an analysis of the non-fictional periodical "Širým světem. The Geographical Magazine", founded by Nikolau for young readers in 1924 that is the core of the thesis. The magatine's content also corresponded to that − it included adventure stories, short stories and original travel reports that − in addition to the resilience of the human spirit − also reflected the diversity of geographical conditions especially on non-European continents. It continued to develop and change in the context of Nikolau's preferences, reflecting the growing interest of the reading public...
Evaluation of pupils performance in geography at four-years high school
Weiner, Adam ; Řezníčková, Dana (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with a deeper understanding of the professional beliefs of geography teachers in the area of evaluating the performance of pupils in the teaching of geography. On the basis of a qualitative investigation, answers two research questions were sought: (1) How do high school geography teachers acquire the competence to evaluate students in their teaching? (2) Which factors influence the teacher's way of evaluating students? The work structure has a traditional layout. The first part frames the selected issue and subsequent research in a more general context. In addition to the explanation of the essence of the starting theory, i.e. the theory of information dissemination, key concepts - professional beliefs and the very competence (competence) of the assessment are defined here. In the practical part, the work focuses on the results of semi-structured interviews with 10 geography teachers in four-year grammar schools. The responses of the respondents were analysed (coded, categorized) in order to answer the research question. We considered the skills in the area of assessment required of graduates of university teacher studies in the Competence Framework for Graduate Teachers (MŠMT 2023) to be a turning point in the theory of the diffusion of innovations. The conducted content...
The usability of the educational game for the cartography education in lower-secondary schools
Zýma, Marek ; Krajňáková, Lenka (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
The presented thesis focuses on the usability testing of the educational game Map of an imaginary island for teaching cartography, which was created by the same author in 2020. The work also briefly introduces the game concept, including a description of its individual components and their functions. To improve clarity, the thesis firstly reviews the literature related to educational methods, particularly didactic games, then the issue of usability, its significance, and application in product testing is presented. The research section of the thesis aims to subject the educational game to usability testing, examining the perspectives of both pupils and teachers on its use and identifying the most significant shortcomings, which are then addressed in a separate chapter. The research was conducted using the two most common methods used in general product testing, i.e., questionnaire surveys and interviews with users. The research results showed that the game is a welcome addition to teaching, with rules that are understandable for both pupils and teachers, evoking a pleasant feeling in them, and despite its gaming nature, maintaining a clear didactic purpose. However, in some cases, there were problems with correct solving of various tasks, mainly due to pupils' age. As mentioned earlier, the thesis...
