Using mixed modes to address nonresponse bias in surveys
Röschová, Michaela ; Hamplová, Dana (advisor) ; Remr, Jiří (referee) ; Hruška, Lubor (referee)
Declining response affecting population surveys in the past decades led to a shift of focus from response rate to nonresponse bias. From a theoretical perspective on nonresponse, reducing nonresponse bias requires altering the differential response propensities of sampled units through the application of unequal intensity or type of effort across the units. At the same time, it is acknowledged that implementing nonresponse bias reduction strategies is more challenging than focusing solely on response maximisation because these two may constitute conflicting objectives, especially in the context of increasing fieldwork costs. This dissertation aims to contribute to the discussion on strategies to address nonresponse bias in the conditions of decreasing response rates and under less favourable survey conditions in general. It explores the barriers to a more widespread application of nonresponse bias strategies and formulates criteria for a more feasible nonresponse bias strategy that would be accessible to a wider range of survey entities. It argues that mixed methods are particularly suitable for offering a solution. The empirical part assesses whether the application of a CAWI conversion attempt in a random probability face-to-face survey may serve as a feasible nonresponse bias reduction strategy....
Operationalization in Social Science: Philosophy of Science Underpinnings and Selected Approaches
Röschová, Michaela ; Buriánek, Jiří (advisor) ; Vinopal, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis pursues the issue of forms and functions of operationalization in social science in relation to its assumptions formed on the basis of philosophy of science conceptions. It shows that the problem was historically shaped by logical empiricism and in spite of the rejection of basic aspects of this position, its influence can still be detected in some approaches to operationalization. As a framework for drawing up operational definitions enabling to step aside from remaining tendencies of logical empiricism the methodological impulses stemming from the realist philosophy of science are brought forward. The first chapter points out to the fact that comparatively little attention has been given to the issue of operationalization in the general methodology of social sciences and presents an overview of plausible explanations of this situation. After that, a standard model of the process of operationalization is outlined together with various conceptions of conditions of its application. The clarification of the philosophy of science basis of operationalization taking place in subsequent parts is therefore expected to provide at least a partial explanation of the little attention given to operationalization. Above all, it aims to set a firm ground for the grasp of various contents of...
Methodological Problems in Self-Report Surveys: Randomized Response Techniques and Crosswise Model in the Study of Crime and Delinquency
Röschová, Michaela ; Buriánek, Jiří (advisor) ; Vinopal, Jiří (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with randomized response techniques and their use in the self- report study of crime and delinquency. Even though the techniques were designed as a response to measurement problems that are encountered also in self-report studies of criminal and delinquent behaviour, they have so far been employed rarely in this context. The aim of the thesis is therefore to explore the potential as well as limits of randomized response techniques for this field of study from a substantial, methodological, practical and technical point of view. The first part tries to determine to what extent self-report studies of crime and delinquency can benefit from the basic asset of randomized response techniques, that is possibility of reducing bias stemming from respondents unwillingness to give honest answers to sensitive questions. We arrive to the conclusion that the self-report study of crime and delinquency could make use of the techniques from a substantial point of view. We point out the fact, however, that within self-report studies there are a lot of sources of measurement error from which only few may be addressed by the techniques. The second part describes randomized response techniques that have not been introduced in detail so far in the Czech context. It focuses not only on the basic...
