Monsters in Folk and Popular Culture

The work is devoted to study the evolution of the concept monstruality throughout European history. In my work I try to show the monster as a phenomenon accompanying the history of humanity from antiquity to the present. Perceptions about the existence of these enigmatic and mysterious creatures in the course of history has changed. Gradually, the monster was pushed out of reality into the world of fiction literature and films, yet had kept its popularity and attention million people as a cultural universal. Antonín Kudláč Czech Popular Fantastic Arts 1990 - 2012 in Cultural, Social and Literary Contexts The dissertation focuses on the exploration of popular fantastic arts in the Czech environment between 1990 and 2012. Popular fantastic arts are defined as a segment of popular culture, which uses fantastic motifs and finds expression in various art forms and media (literature, film and television programs, visual arts, games, etc.). Popular fantastic literature (science fiction, fantasy, horror) is used as the basic medium for research in this area. For defining and understanding the nature of popular fantastic arts, its recipients (the so-called fans), who form a distinctive subculture called the fandom, are of extreme importance. This dissertation, bordering on interdisciplinary cultural anthropology, sociology, literary criticism and media studies, is based on the hypothesis of an active and creative approach of the recipients of popular culture, who endow these cultural artifacts with their own meanings, share them and use them for their own interests. This thesis is focused on analyzing an online social network couchsurfing.org, a hospitality exchange network that provides a possibility to find a free accomodation for its members all around the world. The aim of the thesis is a content analysis of this social network and examination of its position within an alternative tourism phenomenon, as well as an ethnographic analysis of its member's lifestyle and opinions, based on structured questionnaires and semi-structured and unstructured interviews, and an examination of possible subculture-forming tendencies of this website. Historical transformations in the function of Prague demonological legends

This paper is dedicated to phenomenon of Prague legends, as they were captued in various folklore and literaly forms from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The aim of my analysis are not only authentical folklore collectings, but also their literary adaptations. I will also capture the penetration of these collectings into another artistic and pop culture genres and forms. The aim of this paper are not only transformations of topics and motives in Prague demonological legends, but also a dynamic movement of these texts between oral, artistic and popular culture. The main objective will be also to outline the historical development in the transformations of the functions of these legends. In a few centuries, they transformed from the for local society believable stories with a lot of social and cultural functions to primarily entertaining texts of our time, which, however, still may attribute an educational function; part of their theme survives in a form of so-called contemporary legends, myths and rumors.

(in English): The BA thesis focuces on the Russian imposture. It places this problematics into a larger context of the world history. It examines the phenomena of Russian imposture from the historic and folkloristic point of view. The folkloristic material comes from Central Russia, Volga Region and Ural region. In conclusion we consider general questions about mentalities, social ideals, utopias and peoples' models.
Flamenco as a reflection of andalusian popular culture

(in English) The aim of the thesis is to treat the topic of flamenco culture in the place of its origins. It interconnects filological and ethnographical data and the manner of perception of the cultural region of its origin. Its main focus is to describe the history of flamenco as a complex as well as its compounds. Its contents are dedicated to the history and the fundamental elements that participate on the formation and function of the culture itself. The emphasis lays on the expression of the dance, and the so called canto. The end of the thesis is dealing with the phenomenon of flamenco outside Andalucía, in this case the czech cultural region.

Main focus of this thesis is to create coherent view on basis of phenomenon with first explaining the basic idea of mythological phenomenon Wild Hunt, its history from mythological sources through medieval to present popular culture. Next it is trying to outline range of it and following the alteration of phenomenon in time. Slavic motives and their function in the works of K.J. Erben and B. Němcová (cultural studies)

There are numerous characters in the world of Czech fairytales: apart from the common ones, there is also a multitude of supernatural entities. Inspiration for some of them came from different sources, other characters are indigenous and refer to Slavonic ancient mythology. It is exactly the role of these daemons, ghosts and other beings, that depicts the way a mediaeval person was able to adapt to an unknown environment and deal with its threats. The aim of the thesis is to find Slavonic roots of these supernatural beings. First part of the thesis presents an analysis of the most important works of Karel Jaromír Erben and Božena Němcová. Regarding the contemporary understanding of their work, this part questiones the significance of writers' own preconceptions on one side, and the importance of the persisting remains of pagan tradition on the other, and discusses the resulting image and our contemporary understanding of the work. The beings inspired by ancient Slavonic daemonology will be further analysed according to the systematics of V. J. Propp and their role will be explained in the specific fairytales. The collective memory of the forcibly ejected inhabitants: the oral history of Neveklov ant its neighbourhood during the 2nd World War

This Rigorous Thesis is the benefit to studying of the questions of the oral history of forcibly ejected inhabitants of Neveklov and its neighbourhoods during the 2nd World War. About this region, there exists authentic testimony and this territory is fixed in the collective memory. The oral history is a highly valued literary source. Its value is in the authenticity, which is characterized by selectivity and represents another point of view. The essay brings the unique opportunity to get acquainted with witnesses of the wartime. At present this testimony is unknown or is being forgotten in the offical documents. The essay follows the researches of Jaromír Jech from the middle of the last century. If we compare the results of both researches, we get the view of the importance of forcible displacement of Czech inhabitants in a demarcated region. Result of this work is the analysis of the results obtained with the help of the modern approaches that are based on the method of the oral history, which is a part of the qualitative research, with an emphasis on general objectives and context. Urban Anthropology and the Role of Global Cities Applied on Cultural Adaptation of Expat Spouses in Prague

in English Presented thesis is theoretical-empirical analysis and interpretation of migration processes and groups with special focus on expat community temporarily residing in Prague, Czech Republic. Theoretical part draws from anthropological and sociological concepts and theories. It provides an overview of the origin of urban anthropology, and a cross-section of the most important studies of the cities focusing on migration processes. The thesis answers following questions: How has labor migration changed since the Chicago School? Who migrates for work today? How are cities changing under the influence of migration of transnational economic elites? How does the expat subculture influence the Czech capital Prague? What is the adaptation process of the cultural adaptation of expats and their partners in Prague? The empirical part of the paper presents the results of original fieldwork conducted as participant observation of the expat community in Prague from September 2010 to June 2012. The main academic focus was on the analysis of the cultural adaptation of foreigners in Prague, namely the expat community, and the analysis of Prague as a global city.
