The Characters and Space in Prose of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic
Medková, Tereza ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Škarpová, Marie (referee)
The bachelor's thesis focuses on the neo-baroque legends by Jiří Karásek from Lvovice, while the main focus is specifically on his legends in Posvátné ohně (1921) and Barokové oltáře (1922). The aim of the thesis is to examine how Karásek approaches the genre of a legend based on the characterisation of the protagonists and the space they reside in. Firstly, the theoretical part presents the general features of a legend, which are defined by how the figure of the saint is depicted in said legends. This thesis further summarizes the main characteristics of the Czech decadence. Based on the interpretation of the individual legends, common features of Karásek's legends are determined, which are then compared with the general features of legend as a genre. To a certain extent, the thesis also focuses on the issue of updating the Baroque in the context of Czech modernism especially in connection with Karásek's work.

On Speech in the Poetry of Karel Šiktanc
Vinš, Ondřej ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Hrdlička, Josef (referee)
On Speech in the Poetry of Karel Šiktanc The diploma thesis focuses on the poetry of Karel Šiktanc from the 1970 s to the present. It aims to identify and describe those invariables that could characterize his poetic work. In order to accomplish that, two main theoretical sources are used. First, Martin Heidegger's essay Básnicky bydlí člověk, and second, a cognitive ethnolinguistics approach. The overall goal of the thesis is to demonstrate how language (or, more precisely speech) might be conceptualized (cf. the metaphor of speech as space) and what function does speech have in the magical thinking. Using Eugène Minkowski's term zvučení, a noticeable contrast between the sound of speech and silence in Šiktanc's imagery is commented on. Due to the vastness of data, the analysis concentrates on selected poems that are somehow emblematic of each collection.
Motifs, Images and (self)-Stylizations of Czech Decadent Symbolism
Fremrová, Anna ; Merhaut, Luboš (advisor) ; Vojvodík, Josef (referee)
This thesis is focused on the decadent form of Czech symbolist literature at the turn of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The main task is to present a complex catalogue of motifs and images used by Czech decadents in their works and also to analyse the main methods and strategies they used - in particular interstatuality, also connected with the decadent effort to capture the uniqueness of each passing moment, and synaesthesia. The thesis also focuses on the radical individualism of decadent authors and its connection with both the motifs used and the symbolist style in itself - in the form of self-stylization of the decadent authors who tend to identify with their own works and become (even in real life) their own literal subjects. Because of the prominent visual aspect of decadent literature, the thesis also takes into consideration contemporary art works and the relations between words and images.

Erotica and Sexuality in the Work of Franz Kafka
Petrželová, Anežka ; Topor, Michal (advisor) ; Vojvodík, Josef (referee)
The basis of the thesis is the specification of the main terms of sexuality and eroticism as the possible clues to the interpretation of Franz Kafka's novel The Castle. The focal point of the thesis are several fundamental propositions creating a perspective which a novelistic setting could be seen through. The initial assumption gives the idea of a castle as an absolute factor of pleasure and even as the climax itself albeit constantly forbidden and unavailable. The sadomasochistic structure of the aforementioned setting corresponds to this. After determination of the terminological, methodological and semantic basis the main focus is on the area of sacral fetishism where the two concepts collectively generating a distinctive form of attraction converge. The thesis is focused on the circle of female characters and their specificities as well. The consideration is also given to an erotic motif of female servants, tempting ugliness, physical intimacy and estrangement, homosexual attraction, the absence of privacy and private life. Continuously analysed lines of fashionable fetishism, importance of clothing and the contact with a body are put in to mutual relations in the final charter dedicated to the character of the landlady. Key words: sexuality, erotica, Franz Kafka, The Castle, sadomasochistic...
