Research on Strategies Students Use when Solving Problem Tasks
Koreneková, Kateřina ; Rusek, Martin (advisor) ; Bílek, Martin (referee)
The subject of this thesis is the identification of strategies, which are used by lower-secondary school students when solving problem tasks in chemistry. The strategies were identified during talks with ninth-grade students. The talks conducted by using the Think-aloud method were connected with solution of selected problem tasks. The ascertained strategies were classified as expansive strategies (such strategy can be used to solve more types of problems) and limiting strategies (such strategy can be used to solve easy task, but they can fail when solving more difficult tasks). Furthermore, reader's strategies, which help students to understand the tasks were separately identified. Also, other problems that students had to face when solving the tasks were identified. To identify problematic elements a collection of problem tasks named Metodické komentáře a úlohy ke standardům pro základní vzdělávání - chemie (Methodical comments and tasks for educational standards for elementary education - chemistry) were used. The results showed that when students solved the tasks, which were larger and more difficult, they often used reading strategies, which consist in multiple reading and reading aloud. Some of the expansive strategies the students used consisted in analogous deducing and logical reasoning....
Elaboration of Learning Problem-Tasks from the Field of Chemistry
Vojíř, Karel ; Rusek, Martin (advisor) ; Janoušková, Svatava (referee)
This thesis deals with the elaboration of learning problem-tasks related to the Standards for elementary education in the field of Chemistry. The author of this thesis worked on this topic within a project under National Institute for Education. The starting point for creating the tasks, illustrating and concretely expounding the Standards is the concept of science literacy. In this principle in chemistry instruction a broader context and a transfer to everyday life are applied. Learning tasks were created on the base of: science literacy and the results of Czech pupils in its testing, context of standards in Czech curricular system, elements of problem-based learning, types of learning tasks and cognitive parameters. During the elaboration of the tasks a pilot testing of selected learning tasks was realized. The results of the pilot testing were used in further designing more problem-tasks to cover one expected outcome in every topic of Chemistry within the elementary school curriculum. According to the methodology described in this thesis, a material named Methodical comments and tasks to the standards for primary education - Chemistry was created. This material contains a coherent set of learning problem-tasks illustrating two- thirds of the indicators from the standards for elementary education...
Assessing the parameters of quality of chemistry education
Rozkydalová, Andrea ; Rusek, Martin (advisor) ; Beneš, Pavel (referee)
The main scope of this thesis was assessing and evaluation of parameters of quality of chemistry education at secondary and primary schools. In this thesis, there are views at education quality in general connected to the natural science education and specifically chemistry. Then the attention is being paid to the system of curricular documents and standards. Then there are written procedures, description of progress and results evaluation. In this thesis, an evaluation tool was verified during a pilot verification at secondary and elementary schools. A part of this thesis is dedicated to evaluation of individual lessons with the use of evaluation tool. Other possible factors which influence teachers' activity and education quality itself.
Interdisciplinary relations of physics and chemistry in science education
Konečný, Martin ; Valenta, Jan (advisor) ; Rusek, Martin (referee)
Title: Interdisciplinary relations of physics and chemistry in science education Abstract: This master's degree thesis deals with the topic of interdisciplinary relations of chemistry and physics in science education. According to the review, to conveniently integrate physics and chemistry the appropriate topics and approaches were selected. The thesis includes teaching materials and worksheets to the three topics (Evolution of the Universe and the Origin of Elements, Luminescence and Composition and Properties of Matter) that are suitable for integration of physics and chemistry. The teaching material "Evolution of the Universe and the Origin of the Elements" includes a study text for teachers and a shorter study text for pupils. The teaching material "Luminescence" is based on an independent research done by pupils with their own crafted UV-lamp, completed with the facts included in a powerpoint presentation. The teaching material "Composition and Properties of Matter" consists of three parts (The paraffin, The Candle and The Properties of Selected Organic Substances) and is designed for an independent research done by pupils. Listed study materials were checked by teachers during meetings and seminars. The thesis also includes an evaluation of listed study materials by an expert group of high school...
