Orthography of Augusta's Summovník

This thesis presents graphemic analysis of the work "Summovník" by Jan Augusta, based on transliteration of selected stretches of texts. Identified as late as in 2012, the work has not been described yet. The work represents a print of the humanistic period, therefore the principal objective was to find out how two orthographic systems of the period - diagraphic and diacritic - interact. The analysis was divided into several chapters corresponding to the examined features that were statistically evaluated. The interpretation was especially based on two key 16th century grammars of Czech - the Grammar of Náměšť and the "Czech Grammar" by Jan Blahoslav. The transliterated text has been analysed in Microsoft Word 2007 by means of "Find and Replace" with "Use of substitute characters" instrument. The work of "Summovník" in this partially transliterated form can be used as a baseline for preparation of an edition of this work.

Textual Dynamism in Bibles of Melantrichian Tradition (1549-1613)

The topic of this diploma thesis was an analysis and comparison of the Bibles of Melantrichian tradition. In the first part of the thesis, we briefly described the history of the Bible translations in Europe and in Czech lands and then we outlined the importance of Melantrichian Bibles in Czech history and literature. At the end of this part of the thesis, we summarized the conclusions of previous analyses of this topic. In the main part of the thesis, we analyzed differences between all Melantrichian Bi- bles divided into five sections - graphics and orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax and textual changes. We used textual probes into the Old Testament and the New Testament as the method for our analysis. Subsequently, we compared our results with the previous analyses of the topic.

Dual in the Slavonic languages

This present thesis focuses on research of the dual number and its manifestations in a diachronic way, from the Proto-Indo-European (PIE), through the Indo-European (IE), Proto-Slavic and Old Church Slavonic to modern Slavonic languages. It describes concrete manifestations of dual of nouns and verbs synchronically for each historical period. The introductory part outlines the structuring of the non-singular pole of number in various languages. The main part of the thesis deals with description of specific dual forms of nouns, verbs, and mostly also in pronouns in individual periods of the development of the language. The progress of the dual, its growth, recession and disappearance are observed, as well.

Language of the Czech Private Correspondence of the Humanist Period

This work is focused on the language of non-beletristic Czech private correspodence originated between 1611 and 1618 and the aim is to describe the occurence, form and function of linguistic phenomena that refer to higher or lower style. Eight letters from The Archive of Matouš Konečný (deposited in Muzeum Mladoboleslavska) were used for analysis. This manuscripts were transliterated and transcribed in order to gain as much information as possible for futher description. The characteristics of examined linguistic phenomena were taken from diachronic literature first and then compared with analysis results. We also made a conclusion about the influence of stylistic factors (writerʼs competence for creating a cultivated linguistic expression, the relationship between writer and addressee, thematic and functional aspects) on achieved standard of style refinement. Preparation of 19th century poetry for publishing (case study)

This thesis deals with 19th century Czech poetry editing. It outlines, among other things, the historical and social conditions of literature edition of this era and strives to point out all that could have affected the situation of the time and that could have subsequently been the cause of certain editing alterations. The author also tries to think of what a 19th century editor needed to know and consider; what mistakes could have been caused by human factor and/or the author's or external influences. On an example of a short poem from the first half of the 19th century, the thesis attempts to point out the proper and improper alterations together with their necessity or voluntariness.

Language and Style of Czech-American Periodicals

The aim of this work is to introduce the immigration of Czech people to the USA and their cultural and especially literary and journalistic activities, the first Czech-American periodicals and their editors. The second part of this work deals with the description of these periodicals, namely with both content and formal description of the weekly periodicals Národní Noviny and Slávie. The last part of the work brings the analysis of the advertising section. Graphyc, morphology and lexicon are analysed. Based on this analysis, main characteristics of the language levels mentioned and their changes between 1860 and 1894 are given.

Hand-down narration and the Czech Chronicle by Václav Hájek z Libočan

The thesis defines on the base of analysis The Czech Chronicle of Václav Hájek from Libočany and it's comparison with five selected sources (Kosmas' Kronika česká, The work of so called Follower's of Kosmas, The Chronicle of so called Dalimil, The Zbraslavská Chronicle and Eneas' Silvio's Historia Bohemica) the term "narace" (derived from narration), which is introduced for enclosed epic storyline found in Hájek's work. It finds relation amongst "narace", rhetoric tradition and local historiography and this way tries to place The Czech Chronicle back to the understanding of development of national literature, from where it was excluded by positivistic historians on the end of 18t h and during 19t h century. Birds in the phraseological similes. Contribution to the study of the linguistic picture of the world in Czech

This bachelor's thesis is a contribution to the study of the linguistic picture of the world in Czech. The first chapter of the thesis describes the formal semantic structure of the phraseological simile and further discusses the simile's position within the linguistic picture of the world. Moreover, the chapter defines the thematic group of zoonyms (names of animals) in relation to similes. The second chapter presents the linguistic picture of the prototype of a bird, and the next one focuses on specific bird species. The thesis not only reconstructs particular linguistic pictures, but also, most importantly, links them with phraseology - primarily with lexicalized similes. These set phrases relate to the bird itself (its body, behaviour and character) as well as to various significant aspects of its life (e.g. its nest or eggs).

Language and style of Czech translations of Émile Zola's novels

The aim of this bachelor thesis is the comparative analysis of the Czech translations of Émile Zola's novels. The first chapter presents naturalism as the literary movement and treats his major figures. The second chapter contains theoretical basis which deals with process of translation putting emphasis on Czech and Slovak translation theories. The third chapter is focused on the analysis of the Czech translations and tries to define critically the translation solutions used by Czech translators. By way of conclusion, this thesis seeks to summerize the results of the analysis and offers their critical evaluation.

Trends in development of vocabulary in the youngest generation in Český Těšín

This thesis is presenting actual state of vocabulary in common speech of the youngest generation in Český Těšín. The purpose of the research is to recognize and describe development and changes of word stock according to the research questionnare. The work includes theoretical part which elucidate charakteristics of main terms based on the review of the literature. The survey results are compared with state noticed in Český jazykový atlas and with sample of the oldest and middle generation.
