Holá, Lucie ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
The diploma thesis "Gender differences in risk attitude among Czech high school students" discusses how people deal with risk in everyday life. The first part of the paper investigates the forming of risk perception, and the factors that influence the process. Social and cultural structures are of high importance, but also individual factors (such as gender or personal experiences) as well as media representation matter. Risk perception plays a key role in decision-making in situations dealing with uncertainty and the paper asserts that it is possible to model risk behaviour and make predictions accordingly. The second part of the paper presents research on risk attitudes among Czech high school students. It deals with gender differences and students' willingness to risk in three key domains: social, health and leisure time. The model used in the paper focuses on students' willingness to participate in a given activity, their perception of the probability of negative outcomes, and the degree of pleasure derived from the activity. Research indicates that a) men are more willing to risk in health and leisure time related activities, whereas women are more daring in social activities; b) students coming from academically oriented schools are more willing to risk in social activities than students...

CHARLES UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of Sociological Studies Pavla Procházková How people buy on internet Abstract of the Diploma Thesis This thesis describes the basic principles of human behavior in shopping on the Internet. The aim was to tell whether shopping on the Internet is rational. The work deals with theories of rationality and bounded rationality theories from the perspective of sociological, economic and psychological approaches. All theories agree that the man is rational, selects the most efficient option of possible behavior. Whether the benefits gained are economic, social or psychological. From this broad perspective, it is clear that people in most cases their actions are rational, because even the deepest emotions have some rational basis, however, that over the centuries They lost its effectiveness. Perhaps it may be irrational today due to too rapid growth of technology, information overload (information is becoming more and more widely available, but their understanding is worse, a man must decide which of them to follow). Internet for shopping feature brings greater rationality in their instruments. It also restricts such perceptions, which reduces the rationality of choice. Remr, Jiří ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Hendl, Jan (referee) ; Winkler, Jiří (referee)
The main focus of presented thesis is the in-depth analysis of major patterns of how the evaluation methodology is applied within the Czech society environment. The starting point is identification of key processes and activities that distinguish evaluation from other activities and disciplines. Based on comparative analysis among evaluation, primary research, monitoring and auditing the crucial features are defined and further supplemented by other characteristics of the procedural nature. The whole series of researches focus on the extent in which the evaluation methods, techniques and procedures are applied in everyday practice. In this respect, there were identified three different and uncorrelated branches that serve as application environment for routine deployment of evaluation inquiries. Following secondary goals of our thesis, each of the branches represent different example of how the evaluation could be applied/implemented. Desk-research informs about actual patterns of how the evaluation is performed by external evaluators who work for Managing Authorities of EU Operational Programs, it also shows how internally based self-evaluation is performed and last but not least, how the hybrid evaluation based on expert judgment principles could be utilized for evaluation of bachelor thesis. Specific...
Towards the Methodological Foundation of Social Capital Theory. How (not) to Measure it in the Czech Republic.
Häuberer, Julia ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Hendl, Jan (referee) ; Rippl, Susanne (referee)
The field of social capital still lacks a recognized general theory. Accordingly, various and sometimes inappropriate measurements are used for it. The present monograph contributes to filling in this gap and provides progress towards the creation of a formalized social capital theory. Starting with the basic concepts of social capital of Bourdieu [1983] and Coleman [1988] we derive a general definition of social capital. Social capital is a property of relationships among individuals that are a resource actors can use and benefit from. Because neither Bourdieu's nor Coleman's concepts are appropriate as a general social capital theory the more current concepts of Putnam [2000], Burt [1992] and Lin [2001] are contested for this purpose. The discussions show that we can distinguish between cultural social capital (generalized trust, norms of reciprocity) and structural social capital (networks) and that we should focus on one of the two. Thus, we focus the latter but we take into account that cultural social capital is a preconditions as well as an outcome of structural social capital. Structural social capital is further influenced by collective assets (economy and historical or technological background) and individual characteristics (gender, age or ethnicity). Access to structural social capital or social...

Prokůpková, Zuzana ; Tuček, Milan (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Hynek (referee)
This thesis is specialized for perception of social and distributive justice in the Czech Republic after the year 1989 with the target to specify the potential changes and differences in the individual opinions caused by the influence of transformation. The thesis starts with a definition of the concept of social and distributive justice and after that it consists of one methodological and two empirical sections. The methodological part determines the questions which are probed in a survey (secondary analysis) than the used data files and chosen personal characteristics. This diploma work also clarifies (represents) a focus groups research, its process, the sample and the target groups. The secondary analysis of perception of social and distributive justice is the first empirical part the target of which is to identify the changes which had happened in 1990s. The next goal is to determine the factors on which perception of justice was depended. These outcomes are replenished by the view of the perception of the justice in the year 2005 when the similar survey was made. The focus group research is the other part of the thesis which could examine into individual motives and determines the concrete facts which are the reasons of individual persuasion about justice or injustice. The attempt of finding the model...
Internalisation of Czech press
Pivoňka, Ondřej ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
This paper is to be considered a contribution to critical media analyses. It is based on the thoughts of Herman and McChesney (1997). It is an effort to apply their thesis about global media systems on the example of Czech newspapers. The core of the paper is comparative content analysis of three major dailies in 1994 and 2004. The analysis verifies the trends that according to Herman and McChesney characterises the development of mass media. Those are concentration and consolidation of capital on the newspaper market, and commercialisation, globalisation, tabloidisation and homogenisation of the contents of the dailies. The analysis has been conducted on the sample of 20 issues of each title in each year. It brought results that partly confirm and partly contradict the theory. The trend of concentration of capital has been observed. The rate of Czech capital on the newspaper market is as low as 15%. The rest is divided among few foreign (mostly two German) companies. The reason of this situation is identified as lack of legislative protection of the newspaper market in the transformation processes in the 90's. The trend of tabloidisation and commercialisation of the contents of the dailies has been proven too. There is no doubt this has negative effects for the public sphere. However, instead of the trends...
The influence of war on suicide rate
Olchavová, Dita ; Guasti, Petra (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Hynek (referee)
This work traces how the research dealing with the influence of war on the suicide rate have changed since Durkheim's time up to recent days. Durheim maintained that during wartime the suicide rates tend to be lower than in more peaceful times and that this is due to higher political integration of the society produced by wars. This idea has been studied by various sociologists in order to confirm or refuse this idea on the basis of individuallevel data research on suicide in different countries at different times. Some studies have found support for the idea, while other have not. Investigating these studies - their results as well as their methodology - brings up valuable information about the crucial points of conducting a research of this domain.
