What Drives the Grades of Bachelor Theses?
Kurka, Josef ; Schwarz, Jiří (advisor) ; Korbel, Václav (referee)
This thesis examines factors influencing grades of bachelor theses. We are not aware of any literature dealing directly with factors affecting grades, hence we review literature investigating determinants of citations in the scientific articles, which is a topic very similar to ours. The literature shows numerous factors with potential to be determinants of grades. They vary from general characteristics to content, cited literature or academic degree of advisor and opponent. Most of those variables are correlated with inner abilities of each student, which could make our model suffer from endogeneity. A proxy in the form of average grade from mathematic courses is included to deal with this problem. To account for model uncertainty resulting from high number of explanatory variables, Bayesian Model Averaging is employed on our dataset comprised of 100 bachelor theses of IES students. Academic degree of advisor and opponent, as well as clarity of writing were found to influence grades significantly. In some specifications, mathematics grade and selection of literature turn out to be efficient predictors of grades as well.
Spectrum Auctions in Telecommunications
Wolfová, Veronika ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Korbel, Václav (referee)
Telecommunication sector is one of the most developing in last 20 years. The speed of the progress in inventing new technologies has to be balanced by proper radio spectrum management since radio spectrum is a scarce resource. The methods of assignment used in past such as beauty contests or lotteries are no longer those that rule the sector. To keep pace with new technologies, spectrum auctions were presented as a new method that ensures the best results for state. Since the companies are competing for the licenses, final price is getting higher and thereby higher revenues go to the state treasury. In this thesis the behavior of final price in the spectrum auctions was examined. In the end of the work, recommendations to NRAs were presented to conclude the results of the empirical examination. Financial markets modeling - experimental and agent based approach
Štefanová, Hana ; Vácha, Lukáš (advisor) ; Korbel, Václav (referee)
Tato práce se zabývá problémem modelování finančních trhů. K modelování používáme dva přístupy: simultánní a experimentální. Nejprve představíme agentní modelování a experimentální ekonomii.
Comparison of progress in information processing after a term of studies of mathematical and non-mathematical programs
Ďurovčíková, Edita ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Korbel, Václav (referee)
If we follow the rules of neoclassical microeconomics, the way the information is told to individuals should not matter. But the research has been showing that this does matter. In my bachelor thesis, I firstly introduce the term behavioral economics and describe some of the effects which influence information processing of individuals. In the second part of my thesis I present the main part of my bachelor thesis - detailed description of my research where I try to answer the main question: Is there a significant difference in progress in information processing between mathematicians and non-mathematicians after a term of studies? I also study the initial difference between mathematicians and non-mathematicians and correlation of their progress and other important factors like gender, GPA and an interest in the studied program. I observe a significant difference in progress in 2 out of 7 studied effects, however, correlation with other variables is very limited by a short-time studied period. Keywords behavioral economics, information processing, framing effect, research, econometrics
Field Experiments and Firms: Practical Applications of Behavioral Economics
Chadimová, Kateřina ; Cingl, Lubomír (advisor) ; Korbel, Václav (referee)
Recent development in experimental economics has brought a lot of new meth- ods that could be highly beneficial for both firms and scientists. Rather than carrying out experiments only in laboratories, experimental economists con- duct also field experiments, i.e. the experiments which examine intervention in the natural environment of participants, claiming that people tend to behave more naturally there and therefore the results are more realistic. Successful applications of these field experiments show that a proper usage of findings of behavioral economics can significantly improve a firm's market position, de- crease its costs and boost the overall efficiency. Moreover, economists are given a great opportunity to test various microeconomic theories about consumer's or firm's behaviour at the same time and to quantify their impact. The goal of this thesis is two-fold. First, I scrutinize different types of field experiments that were applied in firms, define their efficiency and summarize their outcomes. Second, I define the best practices for effective cooperation between experimen- tal economists and firms. Moreover, I design a hypothetical field experiment to reveal the effect of time-management training on a firm's productivity.
Children and cheating: A field experiment with individuals and teams
Korbel, Václav ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Mlčoch, Lubomír (referee)
This thesis presents a field experiment drawing interferences on the lying be- havioural patterns among grammar school students. Students were filling in non-related questionnaire for which they were rewarded. They rolled a dice and for a corresponding number on a dice they obtained a certain number of sweets. Students were not controlled therefore they could choose what num- ber to report. The experiment included one treatment for individuals and two treatments for groups. The analysis shows that a certain fraction of students cheated but they often did not exploit the possibility of cheating maximally. Older students cheated more in comparison with younger students and younger students deceived more in groups. Last but not least, dishonesty in groups may also hinge on the family background, namely on the number of siblings. The model of self-concept maintenance explains the cheating patterns observed in our experiment best among all discussed models. 1

Vliv struktury sourozenců na dětskou práci a školní docházku
Korbel, Václav ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Janotík, Tomáš (referee)
In scholarly literature the impact of sibling structure is commonly examined in connection with child health and school attendance. The aim of my bach- elor thesis is to determine what influence has the particular sibling structure on child labor, which is not studied so often, and the school attendance re- lated to the subject. The first part dwells on models of resource allocation within household and description of basic mechanisms regarding the method in which the structure of siblings influences resource allocation within house- hold. Main emphasis is laid on theoretical model with household production. Hypothesis about effect of sibling structure is then empirically tested using data from two African countries - Sierra Leone and Niger. Based on this analysis, it is possible to conclude that particular structure of siblings do not have fundamental influence on recourse allocation within household. Last but not least, reasons of differences between chosen countries are discussed in the conclusion.
Emotional Anchoring in Experimental Asset Markets
Pospíšil, David ; Korbel, Václav (advisor) ; Gregor, Martin (referee)
Human decision making process is influenced by many external as well as internal factors. Our behaviour cannot be deemed as fully rational. This thesis investigates the effect of emotional anchoring on a propensity to enter an asset bubble. This effect was observed in an experiment ran on an online crowdsourcing platform, Amazon Mechanical Turk. The negative anchor proves to have a significant negative effect, i.e. when a subject is under the negative anchor she is more prone to enter the bubble. The positive anchor does not have any significant effect. This thesis contributes to the general knowledge by confirming that trading decisions we make are subjected to the emotions we feel prior to making the decisions. Education and HIV: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa
Kopecký, Tadeáš ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Korbel, Václav (referee)
The HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a large threat for developing countries, es- pecially for Sub-Saharan Africa. To be able to fight the epidemic, we need to understand the socio-economic drivers of it to distinguish the groups of people at the highest risk of the HIV. We performed an econometric analysis using logistic regression dealing with the relationship between education and several HIV connected factors - HIV status, HIV knowledge and sexual behavior - based on a large sample from 21 Sub-Saharan African countries from Demographic and Health Survey data collection from years 2008-2014. The education ap- pears to be non-lineary correlated with the HIV status as people with primary and secondary education are at the highest risk of being HIV positive. These results can be nevertheless influenced by e.g. survivorship bias as the education appears to have a positive effect on both HIV knowledge and protective sexual behavior. It is thus advised to promote education in the Sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, it is needed to target the help primary to the groups at the highest risk of being HIV positive to prevent further spread of HIV and to help families of the HIV positive individuals. Moreover, we found that there is no significant difference in the correlation between education and HIV status between...
