The Depiction of Miracles in "Pražské veliké a malé…" by Emericus à S. Stephano and "Vůdce cesty…" by Damascen Marek This Bachelor's thesis is concerned with the topic of miraculously answered prayers. It compares the book by Discalced Carmelite friar Emericus à S. Stephano "Pražské veliké a malé…" dealing with the Divine Mercy statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague located in the Church of Our Lady Victorious in Prague and the book "Vůdce cesty…" written by Franciscan friar Damascen Marek about the place of pilgrimage in Hájek near Prague. The opening chapter, which contains brief authors' biographies, is followed by the part comparing different conceptions of both books. The analysis of recorded miracles' typology constitutes thesis' core. Significant attention is also paid to the personality of the people whose prayers were answered as well as to social stratification of the supplicants from both places of pilgrimage. Apart from that, the thesis looks at votive offerings as an important manifestation of the period religiosity. Based on researched archive sources, the Bachelor's thesis attempts to present the exceptional role of the miraculous answer to prayers in religious life of Baroque man. The main topic of this study is Antonín Jan Kelský, a preacher operating in Smečno and Kněževes nearby Rakovník, and his collections of festive sermons that were published in 1732 and 1734 in two volumes. The subject of the study is mainly the connection between sermons and legends. Less space is devoted to art monuments that were created in Kněževes territory.

Mai, Portia and Hester - heroines of Marina Carr's trilogy - their irish identity in the background of antic tragedies

The aim of this bachelor thesis is the characterization of three female protagonists appearing in the work of the contemporary Irish playwright Marina Carr. Through in-depth analyzation of heroines Hester (By the Bog of Cats), May (The Mai) and Portia Coughlan. I revealed their symbolic relationship, which is analogous to protagonists characteristic for tragedies of the antic Greece. Moreover, this thesis also investigated, how gender and national identity is reflected on the actions of heroines. Last but not least I explained the importance of Marina Carr in the broad context of the modern Irish drama, while presenting the essence of her creative work.

Two-faced Garden: Different approaches to The Cement Garden

The aim of my bachelor thesis is to analyze the first work of a contemporary British author Ian McEwan, The Cement Garden and to present its wide influence on art. To achieve my intention, I have focused on analyzing the play performed by Švandovo divadlo. The analysis is based on crucial events, such as the death of the father, the perish of the mother and her burial and final incestuous scene. Each moment has been closely examined so that one may understand the process of adaptation. The explanation of an adaptation process has been provided to support my claims. An opening chapter delves on the life and work of Ian McEwan, mentioning The Cement Garden which historical context is provided and on the remark regarding an evolutional process of literary work which is concerned with child protagonists. Author's inspirations and motives are also mentioned. Second chapter not only closely analyzes the novel and the crucial events, but also focuses on formal requirements, such as the narrator or the setting. Meanwhile the next chapter considers the theater adaptation and its accomplishments and downfalls. Brief explanation of possible adjustments is provided as is the difference between the prosaic text and the script. Final part is dedicated to the movie adaptation by Andrew Birkin. Cinception of the relationship between man and woman in the morally formative prosaic cycle written by Šimon Lomnický from Budeč

This diploma thesis deals with life and work of a pre-White Mountain period poet, prosaist and dramatist Šimon Lomnický of Budeč, taking the period criticism into account. The thesis focuses on his ethical series, especially the work Kupidova střela, whose central motive is the relationship between a man and a woman. With regard to Lomnický's frequent use of exempla, this term is defined, along with the brief historical development of exemplum. Next the thesis deals with the exemplum in the context of the given ethical series. The key chapter called The Approach to Relationships between Man and Woman depicts Lomnický's conception of marriage, incest, sodomic sin and a revenge as well. Within this chapter the typology of men's and women's characters is given, those who appear in Kupidova střela.
