This thesis attempts to capture the development of the position of civil engineers, who tried to achieve the position of an academic educated elite in the society of the 2nd half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The complete professionalisation of engineers was the condition "sine qua non" to the recognition of civil engineers as part of the academic intelligentsia, and that was one of the main reasons why civil engineers sought to enter the municipal government. The aim of the thesis is to complete the research of the transformation of the municipal government from the "honorationes" into the "executive" government in the city of Prague. The example of engineer Jan Kaftan shows a successful career of one technician, who thanks to, among other skills, his technical knowledge, was elected to the Austrian parliament. Sováková, Veronika ; Hnilica, Jiří (advisor) ; Pokorný, Jiří (referee)
v anglickém jazyce The present thesis deals with the life and activities of Hanuš Jelínek (1878-1944), one of the most prominent figures of the Czech-French relations of the first half of the 20th century. Based upon studies of archive documents, press and literature, its aim is to explain his activities namely during the period of the First Republic which has not been much reflected in the literature so far. This is mainly due to the fact that the primary source on Hanuš Jelínek - his memoirs called Zahučaly lesy ("Forrest Murmurs") end in 1919. The thesis is divided into three bigger parts. The first one recapitulates Jelínek's youth, formation of his personality and political views and last but not least the birth of his Francophilia. The second, pivotal part, places emphasis on his effort to get himself established in the nascent Czechoslovak diplomatic services. It analyses the eleven year period Jelínek spent at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as other activities stemming from his position there. The final part deals with Jelínek's cultural life and influences, however, it only gives a general overview necessary in order to understand Jelínek's personal life and has no ambition to review his extensive literary work. It accentuates, though, his work in Lumír journal that Jelínek...

Pedagogue Josef Soukup
Bandasová, Monika ; Pokorný, Jiří (advisor) ; Hnilica, Jiří (referee)
The theme of my thesis is the patriotic pedagogue Josef Věnceslav Soukup (1819-1882) whose life was full of feverish activity in the educational system. Moreover he was a prolific author of textbooks (one of his famous is The Technological Natural History) and musical works - we can mention his Wreath of fine songs which includes the song Wayfarer that is known for today. In music he paid attention to carols and Christmas songs and plays as well (the most famous is The Young Shephers of Bethlehem). J. V. Soukup excelled in almost every field, not only in pedagogy and music but also in drawing (he even taught Mikoláš Aleš, the well-known Czech painter), chemistry, technology and cultivation of plants. Moreover he contributed to many pedagogical magazines. The beginnins of his teacher's career were not easy, he strained for an appropriate position and during that time he had hardly anything to eat. He gave private lessons for food and played in pubs with the band of musicians to earn some money. However, as really hardworking and diligent student he got stipendium and thus he had not have any financial problems since that time. He knew K. S. Amerling (a great pedagogue who participated in the efforts of a higher girls' education) whose lectures he attended and was influenced by his philosophy. Josef Věnceslav...

Burget, Eduard ; Pokorný, Jiří (advisor) ; Galandauer, Jan (referee) ; Pavlíček, Tomáš (referee)
Title: Writer and playwright František Zavřel (1884-1947) in cultural context of the first half of the 20th century. Author: Eduard Burget Department: The History and History Didactics Department Supervisor: prof. PhDr. Jiří Pokorný, CSc. Abstract: The writer and playwright František Zavřel was an interesting personality of the Czech cultural life in the first half of the 20th century. He was excluded from the cultural context of the First Republic due to his opposition to the democratic traditions, extreme individualism, and fascist opinions. This dissertation attempts to examine different aspects of Zavrel`s life in cultural and historical contexts. It analyzes Zavrel`s literary, dramatic, and journalistic work in the context of literary art. The purpose of the dissertation is to show how his opinions were reflected in his work and how they were received by his audience. It also shows how he dealt with the cultural institutions and authorities. The dissertation proves that a concrete example of an individual life can expand a view of the interwar Czechoslovakia and shed more light on the "dark side" of its cultural policy.
