Hořejš, Miloš ; Kubů, Eduard (advisor) ; Jančík, Drahomír (referee) ; Hallon, Ľudovít (referee)
Titel of dissertation: Nazi Germanisation and Settlement Policy in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia This work focuses on land and settlement policies in the territory of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. They are treated as an integral part of a unified Germanisation policy which the Nazi regime had implemented within a broader territory of the German Reich. The aim of this study is to evaluate the structure and organisation of the settlement policy and mechanisms of its functioning on both lower and higher levels within the context of administration and implementation of the settlement process. Germanisation was, within the territory of Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, one of the key aspects of German economic policy. Its implementation was based on a combination of assimilation, evacuation, and physical liquidation. In practice, Germanisation measures in the Protectorate took either of the three following forms: 1) transfer of share ownership, 2) Aryanisation of Jewish property, 3) a settlement of Germans on Czech-held land. This sequence more or less corresponded also to the sequence in which the individual measures were to be applied in practice. It was envisioned that Germanisation and settlement policy would be fully implemented and completed only after the end of the war...

Roušar, Jan ; Kubů, Eduard (advisor) ; Jančík, Drahomír (referee)
This work treats of Centrotex Society in the interval from its creation in 1948 until realisation of Rozsypal's economic reform in 1958. Centrotex Society is an example of a company of a foreign trade in the era of central planned economy, which was being functional during a communist regime between 1948 and 1989. In my diploma theses I intended to explain commercial activities of Centrotex Society in this period, changes of its commercial strategy and reforms which it passed through. Centrotex Society was founded in 1948 after nationalization of foreign trade, it dealed with textile raw materials and products. In the sphere of textile raw materials it focused especially on import because in Czechoslovakia there were not (except for flax) suitable conditions for their production. On the other hand, in the sphere of textile products the primary function of Centrotex Society was their export which brought foreign currency to Czechoslovakia. The break of 1940s and 1950s could be called "an era of founding". This period is defined by searching the most suitable way of organising a foreign trade company, which meant often changes of plans and even organizational structure of the company. The situation was also complicated because of the atmosphere of stalinism. It caused that nobody was brave enough to call the...

Gecko, Tomáš ; Kubů, Eduard (advisor) ; Zářický, Aleš (referee) ; Jemelka, Martin (referee)
The aim of the dissertation is to understand the formation and development of the market for construction materials (cement, lime and bricks) in Cisleithania and Czechoslovakia. Emphasis is placed on market trends (changes in consumer habits, new technologies), market monopolisation, state interventionism and institutional changes in business activities (capital inputs of the banking sector and the spread of capital companies). The dissertation contentrates on the basic market conditions and market structure, as well as the strategies of the market players. The market performance (the impacts of the construction materials industry on the Cisleithanian and Czechoslovak economies) is also included. The research is limited by the period of the so-called Great Depression (construction materials began to be produced on the industrial basis) and the turn of 1938/1939, marking the instrumentalization of the Czech lands in favor of the German economy. The dissertation is based on methods of industrial economics (Structure-Conduct-Performance paradigm), economics, economic geography and traditional methodology of economic history (especially business history, hermeneutic and statistical method).

"Heimat in Ketten": Development of ideological construction of german borderland novel in the First Republic
Pípalová, Anna ; Kubů, Eduard (advisor) ; Štolleová, Barbora (referee)
(in English) The presented diploma thesis analyzes German borderland novels (Grenzlandroman) of the interwar period, namely Robert Hohlbaum's Grenzland (1921), Rudolf Haas' Heimat in Ketten (1924), Das Dorf an der Grenze (1936) by Bruno Nowak, writing under the pseudonym Gottfried Rothacker, and Die Brüder Tommahans (1937) by Wilhelm Pleyer. As a literary genre, the borderland novel took conflict between nations as its central theme, while addressing contemporary or recent social evolution. German borderland novels from interwar Czechoslovakia give evidence of how not only the authors but also the whole social groups reflected societal changes in the aftermath of 1918. An analysis of the narratives typical of this segment of literature confirms its relevance to the formation of the German population's identity in interwar Czechoslovakia. Stereotyping mechanisms play a crucial role in instilling abstract notions of nationality in the everyday perception of ordinary people. The borderland novels' narrative practices contribute to the reconstruction and fixation of this stereotypical perception of reality. This perception not only affects the way individuals and social groups view their surrroundings, but also interferes with the interpretation of events. Analysis of the selected texts enables us to...

The Emergence of Cartels in the Czech Lands Hop Production, 1890-38
Pojar, Vojtěch ; Kubů, Eduard (advisor) ; Šouša, Jiří (referee)
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Czech lands were among the largest hop-growing regions in the world. Hop products became, in the interwar period, one of the crucial agricultural export goods of the Czechoslovak economy. This study aims to draw attention to the process of emergence of cartels in this particular branch of agricultural production. It traces the attempts to organize the industry by means of cartels from their very beginning in the late 19th century until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1938. As a point of departure, it takes the assumption shared by many theoreticians of industrial organization who argue that the given structure of the industry to some extent pre-determines the ways how the cartels emerge and the particular forms they assume. These institutions, however, might in turn reshape the structure of the industry. The analysis indicates that the cartels in the hop industry were essentially 'children of opportunity' and their emergence was rarely correlated with an economic crisis. Even though the industry gave rise also to international collusive structures, the cartels in the hop industry were essentially unstable and weak and in most cases, the attempts to create them failed. Present study challenges the belief, widely held in the scholarship on cartels in the Czech lands,...
