Recognition of numerals in Czech texts
Bureš, Jan ; Štěpánek, Jan (referee) ; Hlaváčová, Jaroslava (advisor)
Purpose of this work is to create a tool capable of recognizing cardinal numerals in Czech text, both written with the use of digits and written with the use of words. Emphasis is placed on recognizing numerals written with words and their correct combining. Not only grammatically correct, but also other expressions and their combinations, that are quite frequent in the use of the language, were taken into account. Output is a numeric value of recognized numeral, and a set of possible morphological tags for each numeral. The program performs its own lexical and grammatical analysis based on a set of given numeral forms and rules.
Experimental use of selected cholesterol-lowering drugs as potential candidates in modification of the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease
Cibičková, Ľubica ; Bureš, Jan (advisor) ; Hlúbik, Pavol (referee) ; Jabor, Antonín (referee)
Rationale: The current standard treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is represented by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. In the pathogenesis of AD, cholesterol is directly involved. Its blood and brain levels positively correlate with amyloid β (Aβ) - a peptide characteristic for AD and capable of increasing AChE activity. Based on these data, we may suppose that cholesterol-lowering medication such as statins and alendronate might confer protection against dementia, probably via modulation of cholesterol synthesis in the brain. The aim of the present studies was to investigate possible influence of two lipophilic statins (simvastatin and atorvastatin) and alendronate on cholesterol synthesis in selected parts of the rat central nervous system (CNS) and other parameters relevant to Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology. Methods: We have performed 3 similar experiments on awaked rats that were administered simvastatin, atorvastatin, alendronate or aqua. At the conclusion of experiments, blood and brain parts were isolated and analyzed for cholesterol, lathosterol, hydroxymethylglutaryl- coenzyme A reductase protein, acetylcholinesterase activity, amyloid beta (40 and 42) and cholesterol synthesis rate. Results: All drugs at higher doses were able to lower cholesterol in the plasma, but none...
CSSR/GDR opposition after 1968: a comparison of paths to opposition, mutual perception, plus views of the security bodies
Vilímek, Tomáš ; Kocian, Jiří (advisor) ; Bureš, Jan (referee) ; Otáhal, Milan (referee)
This thesis as submitted has been devoted to comparison of anti-regime activities in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (CSSR) and in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) after 1968. It does not represent a complete survey of opposition movements in the countries subjected to comparison; more likely, it should be a comparative study focused essentially to three fundamental thematic fields. Following the outline of state of contemporary research in the matter, a survey of major (principal) archive sources and, last but not least, the methodology of elaboration of this theses, the author has been focused at the issue of typology of the anti-regime activities, without aiming to expand further the typological scale with new terms, for that one seems to be rich enough already. Rather, it accents the needs of mutual interconnection of these categorisation attempts with some individual aspects of the opposition conduct. Consequently, proper attention has been devoted to the issue of social anchoring of the opposition activities, as well as to a search of key factors of transformation; of a rebirth, in fact, of social refusal into opposition as such.
Civic society in Slovakia. Focus on the local level
Dobrucký, Martin ; Bureš, Jan (advisor) ; Polášek, Martin (referee)
The civic society is one of the basic elements of democracy. It reflects how democracy is incorporated in the society and in its citizens' awareness. It uncovers if/how it is taken and accepted by citizens. The true civil society requires participation and an active attitude from citizens who change themselves from a passive mass into real co-originators of the policies. The presented thesis focuses on the study of a citizen and its role in the democracy of Slovakia. It analyses the behavior of a citizen on the local level, where he/she has the closest contact with the policy. It is the local level where he/she has the greatest chance of participation in the policy making processes.
Changes in British Parliament in 1988-2008
Tyl, Lukáš ; Buben, Radek (advisor) ; Bureš, Jan (referee)
Political system in Great Britain underwent a significant change in the 1990s. Labour Party was the one responsible for the changes which it both initiated and pushed through. Devolution brought remarkable amount of decentralisation, which is likely to spread further in the following years. The Scottish nationalists, above all, will not give up they aim of independent Scotland in the future. British Parliament Upper Chamber reform, mainly the one taking place in 1999, was very intense. Some, even more intense, proposals were rejected. Judiciary reform that took place will do no harm to the House of Lords. It is improbable that the House of Lords will prevent further changes over next ten years. Just like it failed in the past 100 years in fact.
Political Differentiation of the Non-communist Dissent During 1977-89 and Its Formative Influence on the Development of the Political Scene After 1989
Gongol, Aleš ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Bureš, Jan (referee)
The thesis focuses on the formative process of the Czech democratic system after 1989, emphasizing the roots of the process in the pre-revolutionary dissent (pre-revolutionary non-communist opposition) based on five selected personalities Zdeněk Jičínský, Petr Pithart, Václav Benda, Daniel Kroupa and Hana Marvanová. The aim of the thesis is to define the relationship between political ideas of the non-communist dissent, centralized mainly around Charter 77 movement and their individual political moves performed after the November 1989 in the democratic state. The thesis has proven that the selected five personalities maintained their political opinions also after the November revolution and that they did not perform and dramatic ideological changes.
