This thesis deals with the economic development in Vietnam during 1976 and 2000. In this period the country has undergone a significant change from purely socialistic society into a mixed economy. Most importantly revaluation of relations with other countries took place. Outside world seized to be viewed as bipolarity of socialism and capitalism but as a source of opportunities. The thesis gradually describes individual structural reforms of Vietnamese economy with the focus on selected sectors and adaptation of the country on new conditions after COMECON breakup. Special emphasis is made on the efforts of the Communist Party of Vietnam to reach the balance between market release and keeping the power and legitimacy to control the country as the only one admissible ruling party.
