Abstrakt: A key challenge in clinical practice is to fight against pathogenic microorganisms. Treating infections is often complicated by the growing resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics while developing new antibiotics remains limited. The effective lifetime of existing antibiotics can be prolonged by avoiding the overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics which can be achieved through better diagnostics of pathogens. Raman spectroscopy (RS) has emerged as a promising alternative method for identifying pathogenic bacteria, as demonstrated in various studies. On the other hand, the main limitation of RS is its low sensitivity, which can lead to extended measurement times or difficulty in detecting pathogens effectively. However, signal intensity can be significantly amplified through advanced RS techniques, such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In biological applications, the SERS method can be utilized in different ways. One uses a SERS substrate (a planar surface with a nanostructured design). Another approach incorporates nanoparticles directly into the sample. The last approach is using so-called SERS tags.
