cze Abstract:
The bachelor thesis deals with the development of reflection on the phenomenon of mass society in German sociology in the first two thirds of the 20th century. The thesis is divided into eight parts, in which the most important concepts related to mass society are explained in turn; the works and perspectives of the various theorists who have dealt with the phenomenon are presented; and finally, the different conceptualizations and reflections on mass society are analyzed. In particular, the works of Karl Mannheim, Theodor Geiger, Emil Lederer, Hannah Arendt, Theodor W. Adorno, and Max Horkheimer are examined. Marginally, the thesis also focuses on the influence of the analysed concepts of mass society on later sociology and sociological theories and reflects on their relevance for contemporary society. All the findings are linked and evaluated in the discussion chapter. Mass society is understood by the authors under review as a predominantly negative phenomenon with a destructive energy having a negative impact on many sectors of society, such as culture and democracy.
