Strach ze smrti státu bývá vnímán jako nejdůležitější motivace pro jejich akce, kvůli tomu je to velmi důležitým tématem nejen pro samotné státy. Co kdyby se stát dostal do smrtelného nebezpečí bez vlastního přičinění, pouze kvůli svojí geografické poloze? Měly by se státy bát o svou bezpečnost kvůli tomu, že se ocitnou mezi dvěma rivaly? Na takové případy se zaměřila Tanisha Fazal a vytvořila kolem těchto otázek teorii. Podle její teorie se mnoha státům, které se nacházely mezi dvěma rivaly, kvůli jejich poloze zvýšilo ohrožení jejich bezpečnosti a často poté ze stejného důvodu zemřely. Cílem této práce je rozšířit kvantitativní testování Fazal o případ, který ona sama do své teorie nezahrnula a zároveň teorii kvalitativně otestovat. Teorie je testována na případu Irska mezi roky 1923 až 1955. Na základě analýzy historických dat zjišťujeme, zdali byla geografická poloha Irska mezi dvěma rivaly, Německem a Spojeným královstvím, důvodem zvýšeného ohrožení jejich bezpečnosti, primárně ze strany Spojeného království. Během historické analýzy zmíněného časového období nacházíme důkazy potvrzující naše očekávání určená v hypotézách a díky tomu se potvrzuje teorie Tanishy Fazal v případě Irska. Fear of state's death is considered to be the most important motivation for its actions, therefore it is very important topic not only for states themselves. What if state was placed in mortal danger through no fault of its own, simply because of its geographical location? Should states fear for their security because of being caught between two rivals? Tanisha Fazal focused on such cases and developed a theory around these questions. According to her theory, many states that were located between two rivals had an increased threat to their security only because of their location, and often afterwards the state died for the same reason. Aim of this work is to extend Fazal's quantitative testing by case that she herself did not include in her theory and at the same time to test the theory qualitatively. The theory is being tested on the case of Eire between 1923 and 1955 Based on the analysis of historical data, we determine whether Eire's geographical location between two rivals, Germany and the United Kingdom, was the reason for the increased threat to their security, primarily from the United Kingdom. After examining the mentioned time period, we find evidence to confirm our hypothesised expectations and that confirms Tanisha Fazal's theory in the case of Eire.
