The Bauhaus was a state school for most of its existence and as such had to correspond to the political culture of the time and place. The first two chapters deal with the circumstances that led to the establishment of the school, and with the very beginnings of Bauhaus in Weimar. The next chapters deal with Dessau and Berlin, where the school gradually moved, which are set in the context of the post-war political situation in Germany. The personalities of all three principals who worked at the school, as well as other pedagogues and the students themselves, played a significant role in the development of the school's situation. Two separate chapters are devoted to the emergence of Nazism, Nazi art and the Nazis' view of the avant-garde as a depraved art. The conclusion of the thesis deals with the end of the school in Berlin and the reflection of the Bauhaus after the Second World War in both parts of divided Germany.
