Druhá indočínská válka mezi komunistickým Severním Vietnamem a nekomunistickým Jižním Vietnamem se stala nejdelší válečnou událostí 20. století. Během válečných let zastávalo prezidentský úřad ve Spojených státech amerických několik prezidentů. Klíčovou osobností se pro vedení konfliktu stal 36. prezident USA Lyndon Baines Johnson. On a jeho administrativa převzala nutnost řešit latentní válečný konflikt ve Vietnamu po tragickém dallaském atentátu z listopadu 1963. L. B. Johnson se jasně snažil zachovat kontinuitu zahraniční politiky USA s politikou prezidenta Johna F. Kennedyho. USA podporovaly režim v Jižním Vietnamu a byly pro jeho záchranu ochotny riskovat i otevřený válečný střet. Incident v Tonkinském zálivu v srpnu 1964 měl za následek přímou eskalaci války. Následné měsíce pak znamenaly postupný růst napětí, kdy se Severní Vietnam stále více uchyloval ke guerillové válce. Reakcí USA na asymetrické vedení válečných operací bylo masivní letecké bombardování Severního Vietnamu, spolu s nasazením statisíců amerických vojáků do pozemních válečných operací. Politický kredit kabinetu prezidenta Johnsona rychle klesal. Zásadní zlom ve vývoji konfliktu nastal počátkem roku 1968. Na svátek Tet zahájili komunističtí partyzáni a severovietnamská vojska nejrozsáhlejší vojenskou ofenzívu v dějinách... The Second Indo-Chinese war between communist North Vietnam and non-cominist South Vietnam became the longest war in the twentieth century. President Johnson took over the necessity to solve the war conflict in Vietnam after the assassination in Dallas in November, 1963. L. B. Johnson preserved continuity of American foreign policy with president Kennedy's politic. The USA strictly supported South Vietnam and was ready to risk an open war for its regime. The incident in Tonkin Gulf in August 1964 led to escalation of the war. A tension developed during next months when North Vietnam started a guerilla war. The reaction of the USA to guerilla war was huge bombing of North Vietnam and as well deploying thousands of American soldiers into service in land war operations. President Johson's political credit was decreasing fast. In the begining of the year 1968 an essential twist occured. Vietcong (South Vietnamese communist) and North Vietnam army launched the widest offensive during Vietnamese conflict on Tet feast day. A victorious war became a fiasco under view of cameras and media. After the Tet offensive it was no longer possible to speak about the USA victory. Media, people and public opinion were not willing to continue in a "jungle war". President Johnson changed some top officers in the army...
