První věrohodné zprávy o historických povodních z jižních Čech jsou až ze 16. století (např. případ z června 1582). Budeme-li ale pátrat, kdy naposledy zde došlo k povodni alespoň přibližně srovnatelné s rokem 2002, dojdeme k letopočtu 1890: soudobá katastrofa se tedy vyskytla s odstupem 112 let. Konec 19. a začátek 20. století byl ve střední Evropě obdobím zvýšeného výskytu velkých povodní. Kromě roku 1890 se ty největší vyskytly např. v letech 1880, 1897, 1903 apod. Konkrétně v jižních Čechách docházelo od významné vltavské povodně v roce 1888 po dobu osmi let v pravidelných dvouletých intervalech k velkým nebo větším záplavám, tedy v letech 1890, 1892, 1894 a 1896. Současné období zvýšeného výskytu velkých povodní je tedy určitou analogií. Z 20. století, jinak chudého na velké povodně, patřil k relativně největším v jižních Čechách případ z července 1954. The first plausible records about the occurrence of historical floods in South Bohemia originate from the 16th century (e.g. in June 1582). However, should we investigate about the last high water approximately comparable with the flood of 2002, we would arrive at the year 1890. This indicates that the contemporary event occurred after a time lapse of 112 years. The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century saw an increased occurrence of great floods. In addition to year 1890, the most severe high waters occurred for example in 1880, 1897, 1903 etc. Following the great flood on the Vltava (Moldau) River in 1888, there were great floods or more important high waters in South Bohemia arriving in regular 2-year intervals in the period of the following eight years, i.e. in 1890, 1892, 1894 and 1896. The present period of the increased occurrence of great floods is therefore a certain analogy.
