Ostrava a Ostravsko vzhledem ke své poloze v území, kde se stékají čtyři velké vodní toky, mají přírodní předpoklady k častějšímu výskytu povodní. Z historie tohoto regionu je známa řada těchto hydrologických extrémů. K největším povodňovým katastrofám za posledních 200 let patřily např. případy z let 1813, 1831, 1880, 1902, 1903 a 1997. Uvedené povodně přinesly městu i regionu vždy zkázu, ze které se dlouho vzpamatovávaly. With respect to its geographical location in the territory with a confluence of four big water courses the region of Ostrava is naturally predisposed to a more frequent occurrence of floods. There is a whole range of hydrological extremes known in the history of this region. Most severe flood disasters in the last 200 years were for example events recorded in 1813, 1831, 1880, 1902, 1903 and 1997. The mentioned high waters always brought destruction to the region and towns, from which they were long recovering.
