Předkládaná bakalářská práce bude analyzovat politický a společenský vývoj města Filadelfie v průběhu 18. století, především pak v době americké války za nezávislost a bezprostředně po ní. Zvláštní pozornost bude věnována účasti tamních obyvatel na veřejném životě města, vlivu Benjamina Franklina na společnost a jeho přínosu v oblasti kultury a vzdělávání, a také postavení a významu Filadelfie během války, včetně dopadu tohoto konfliktu na její obyvatele. Dále se soustředím na první a druhý kontinentální kongres ve Filadelfii, a také na události, jež předcházely zasedání, a proměnu role kongresu během válečných let. Závěrem bude věnována pozornost vývoji Filadelfie po ukončení války za nezávislost a jeho přechodnému statutu hlavního města USA do konce devadesátých let 18. století. Pokusím se odpovědět na otázku, zda lze Filadelfii považovat za první hlavní město nově vznikajících Spojených států amerických. Klíčová slova: Filadelfie, Spojené státy americké, válka za nezávislost, Benjamin Franklin, kontinentální kongres This bachelor thesis is an analysis of the political and social development of Philadelphia during the 18th century, primarily in the course of the American War of Independence and shortly after its end. Particular attention is paid to the participation of local society in public affairs and Benjamin Franklin's influence on society and his contribution to the field of culture and education. Also a status and importance of the city during the war and its impact on the residents is taken into consideration. I concentrate on the First and Second Continental Congress placed in Philadelphia and the causes that preceded the first meeting. At the conclusion attention is paid to postwar Philadelphia and its status of temporary capital city and I try to answer the question whether the city can be considered as the first capital of the emerging United States of America.
