Přechod od teokracie k světské formě vlády v Černé Hoře, a to na počátku 50. let 19. století, po smrti vladyky, biskupa Petra II. Njegoše, předznamenala velké množství změn v této zemi ležící v oblasti jihozápadního Balkánu. Samotný vznik knížectví, pod ochranou Ruska, ale neznamenal ještě stabilitu a bezpečí. Mladičký kníže Danilo Petrović Njegoš si velmi dobře uvědomoval důležitost rozšíření teritoria, a to z důvodu existenciálních. Těžištěm jeho snah se stala oblast Grahova, protože bylo spojnicí Černé Hory a Hercegoviny. Důležité byly pro knížete i oblasti na jih od Portorice, zvláště pak oblast Žabljak Crnojeviće, která od konce středověku patřila Turkům a byla důležitým symbolem politické moci v oblasti. Útokem na tuto pevnost způsobil kníže politickou roztržku mezinárodní úrovně a následně i vpád tureckých vojsk do Černé Hory, který ukončila až aktivita Vídně, a to vysláním zvláštní mise Leiningena do Konstantinopolu. Obdobná akce ruské strany, a to mise Menšikova, neuspěla, naopak přinesla mezinárodní konflikt, krymskou válku. V jejím průběhu vstoupil kníže do manželství s Darinkou Kvekić, Srbkou z Terstu. Roku 1855 pak kníže vydal zákoník, kterým definoval novodobé pojetí moci v zemi. On sám ale vládl autokraticky. Kníže v průběhu války potlačoval mnohé vzpoury, často financované osmanskou... The very rise of the princedom under the Russian protection did not yet mean the stability and safety.
