V celých českých dějinách nalezneme jen málo období, ve kterých by docházelo k tolika převratným změnám trvalého charakteru, jako tomu bylo během posledního čtvrtstoletí před první světovou válkou. Pokrok se v této době nevyhne žádné z oblastí života společnosti. Projeví se v kultuře, politice i v ekonomických vztazích, není pouze záležitostí "velké historie", ale v podobě překotně se měnící každodennosti zasahuje do všech vrstev obyvatelstva. Výrazná změna letopočtu pak toto beztak již zjitřené prožívání času dále zintenzívní. Rozdíly mezi starým světem 19. století a nastávajícím 20. věkem budou vnímány v tomto srovnání, a proto ještě citlivěji, než tomu bylo s jednotlivými dílčími projevy modernizace doposud. Nadcházející doba je spojena s napjatým očekáváním. Zdaleka však nejde pouze o nadšení z dosud netušených možností, neméně zajímavé jsou hlasy k novinkám kritické až odmítavé. Ani ty proto nezůstanou v následujících úvahách opomenuty.
