Facing the loss: Loss figures in the postwar central european literature

My paper will focus upon the theme of loss in postwar Central European literature in works of Nabokov, Bachmann, Bernhard, Handke, Esterhazy, and Chwin, which are narrated as a modern subject's testimony of loss. My goal is to make a collection of loss figures (inspired by Roland Barthes's Fragments of a Lover's Discourse) to examine the nature of testimony in relation to the acts of writing. Any analytical inquiry that focuses itself on the literary testimony as a work of art will have to deal with these textual mechanisms: transparency, suppression, deleting, distancing, turning over, heaviness and reduction.

Between Subjectivity and Object: Self in the Discourse of Modern Japanese Literature

(in English): This thesis is devided into three parts. In the fist part, the development of literary discourse in Japan between Meiji and postwar period is described, with emphasis on the development of literary character and Subject in a work of literature. The second part theoretical apparatus for studiying and analyzing literary character is introduced, using contemporary literary theory. In that part relationship between literary character and its subject is also included. In the third part, these findings are applied on a specific literary works of Japanese postwar literature, on which development and changes of literary character are observed. The three analyzed works here are Kamen no kokuhaku by Mishima Yukio, Tanin no kao by Abe Kōbō and Man'en gan'nen no futtobōru by Ōe Kenzaburō.

Literary Creation of Petru Popescu in Context of Romanian Post-war Literature

During the communist era in Romania the literature and its authors had been under pressure of normative demands, which substantially restricted freedom of writing. The authors tried to escape the official socialist realism and restore the esthetic function of literature. In the introduction chapter of this work this evolution is described. One of the authors trying to restore the esthetic function of Romanian prose in the 60s was Petru Popescu inspired by the urban background and American literature. His novels express the emotions of the Romanian post-war young generation. Although being successful in his homeland he emmigrated to the USA in 1974, where he made a career as an English writing scenarist and novelist. Other chapters of this thesis describe his work from his poetic debut until his latest work. They reflect the changes in his choices of topics and narrative methods applying the F. K. Stanzel's literary theory. One of the chapters deals with general questions related to exile, writer's identity, selection of the languages and adaptation strategies. Postwar Japanese literature and historical transition durin the years 1945 - 1960

The thesis presents an assumption that literature is inspired by reality (besides other factors), and that specific literary worlds may, to a certain extent, reflect the actual state of society. Historical events around the end of WWII and the consequent rapid social changes in Japan during late 1940s and 1950s had an indisputable impact on literary production at the time. The aim of this thesis is to affirm this assumption through an analysis of selected short stories and novels from the time concerned. The analysis focuses on remarks and on references about the period of time when the prose was written, and also on behavioral and attitude changes of its characters - prototypes of the Japanese society. The direct impact of historical and social transition on literary work may also be traced in the works' themes, motifs and narrative. We can thus, in many cases, follow the development of the Japanese postwar society from 1945 until the late 1950s, when the country started to prosper economically. The selection of the analysed pieces of literature includes two novels which did not only describe the time of their origination, but also had reverse effect on society. The Image of Ageing in Postwar and Contemporary Japanese Literature

Japan is recently facing the issue of rapidly ageing population along with the negative impact of this phenomenon. It is one of contemporary social concerns, which is being reflected in culture and arts as well, literature included. The paper describes the subject of imaging ageing and the process of ageing itself using the method of literary analysis in five selected representative works by three significant authors of Japanese literature dating from the post-war era up to nowadays. By detailed analysis of literary characters relevant to the subject, the paper focuses on particular aspects of the protagonists' psychological profile and their internal conflicts concerning the sense of life and death. For this purpose, the paper is using illustrative quotations from the primary sources. Furthermore, the paper covers interaction with other characters and interpersonal relations involved in the development of the main characters in the course of the particular publication. In the end, the paper presents the results of analysis, finding that the analyzed works seem to show multiple similarities in the basic scheme of presenting the main elderly characters and also discusses the differences between the authors' literary styles.
