Comparison of Italian text and Czech translation of Věčný pekelný žalář
Jasanská, Zuzana ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
The task of this diploma thesis is to confront the writing La prigione eterna dell'Inferno that was written by Giovanni Battista Manni with its Czech translation that was made by Václav Matěj Šteyer. This piece of writing, La prigione, was published in 1666 and the Šteyer's work in 1676. The writer Šteyer translated the text directly from the Italian one according to the fourth publication of Manni's master copy from the year 1669 because Manni changed there some passages in last two chapters and these changes are seen in the Czech version too. Neither Manni's writing was not original. He was inspired by a tract that was written by the Spanish Jesuit, Juan Eusebio Nieremberg. I observed the way how Šteyer proceeded in the translation of Manni's master copy, especially in the field of lexicon, syntax and stylistics. I also concerned how the rhetoric of Jesuit schools is presented by both authors.
Valerius Maximus and Exemplum
Černá, Julie ; Kuťáková, Eva (advisor) ; Šubrt, Jiří (referee) ; Mouchová, Bohumila (referee)
Valerius Maximus' exempla collection, Facta et dicta memorabilia, has for a long time stayed out of focus of modern literary science. Viewed rather as a practical handbook for orators, it had earned criticism for its allegedly low literary value, especially in the first half of the 20th century. Although this view was later revised at least to some extent, and Valerius was admitted to have literary ambitions in so far that his work was characterized as an original literary achievement of an author who in his collection presented a summary of moral values and standards of his time, the interest in his work has stayed rather fragmented, with researchers preferring to analyze only its specific aspects (such as ethics, religion, historical reflection, etc.). This thesis aims for a comprehensive view of Valerius' collection as a whole against the analysis of theoretical interpretation of exemplum as preserved within the Roman theoretical rhetorical writings. The interpretation is performed by the analysis of the whole, examining the way the entire collection is arranged, through the description of the structure and division of individual chapters, down to the level of the core structural unit, the exemplum. It emphasizes information related to the work's focus or to the inclusion of specific topics that Valerius...

Jesus Christ is the only Norm of Christian Moral: Sacramentum et Exemplum and it 's Moral Meaning in the Work of Benedict XVI.
Válka, David ; Lorman, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Sládek, Karel (referee)
Jesus Christ is the only one Norm of Christian Moral: Sacramentum et Exemplum and it 's Moral Meaning in the Work of Benedict XVI. Jesus Christ commands the love to his apprentices in The Farewell Speech (John 13,34 and 15,12) but he commands de facto himself, because he is incorporated love. He is the sacrament - Sacramentum, we take him at communion where our being is converted, we are disposed to love. He is also the example - Exemplum, which is teaching us to live in love and to do deeds of love. These aspects are the topic of this work. The first task is to analyze moral meanings both of the aspects in the work of Benedict XVI. The triptych Jesus of Nazareth (Jesus-Buch in Germ. abbreviation) is considered as a key work. Also all the pope's encyclicals are in indirect dialog with Jesus-Buch, mainly the Deus caritas est. The Spirit of the Liturgy is important in the topic as well. The analytic part of the work, according to the it's size, is focused only to such depth, to be the basic thesis: 'Jesus Christ is the only one norm of christian moral' theological legitimate. The main aim is to prove, if our thesis is taken as a fact, that Jesus's commandment of love is unique, universal rule, of which moral influence is realized through the Eucharist and is concretized in living activity of Christ...
Cinception of the relationship between man and woman in the morally formative prosaic cycle written by Šimon Lomnický from Budeč
Bednaříková, Petra ; Sládek, Miloš (advisor) ; Havelka, Tomáš (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with life and work of a pre-White Mountain period poet, prosaist and dramatist Šimon Lomnický of Budeč, taking the period criticism into account. The thesis focuses on his ethical series, especially the work Kupidova střela, whose central motive is the relationship between a man and a woman. With regard to Lomnický's frequent use of exempla, this term is defined, along with the brief historical development of exemplum. Next the thesis deals with the exemplum in the context of the given ethical series. The key chapter called The Approach to Relationships between Man and Woman depicts Lomnický's conception of marriage, incest, sodomic sin and a revenge as well. Within this chapter the typology of men's and women's characters is given, those who appear in Kupidova střela.
Elijah in the New Testament and Apocryphal Literature
Hládek, Mária ; Dus, Jan (advisor) ; Mrázek, Jiří (referee)
The prophet Elijah is according to the Hebrew Bible understood as a righteous individual who did not die but was taken to heaven on a fiery chariot. This thesis attempts to clarify how the New Testament and the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha treat this legend in their own contexts which are dependent on the imagery of religious background in which Elijah is expected to return. Since both New Testament and the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha deal with possible or fictitious continuum with the Hebrew Bible, (canon of which was not necessarily settled at the time of creation of a particular New Testament or Pseudepigraphic writing), explicit mention of Elijah the prophet leads to assumptions about the nature of belief in the era of the late Judaism and early Christianity and the manner this legendary motif evolved. Depending on the phenomena and characters Elijah the prophet is dealing with in a particular writing and taking into account religious context of the writing, it is possible to find out which motifs touching this character might be considered to be brought to an end in the Christian canon and which are sort of autonomous in realms influenced by Judeo-Christian materials.

Antique ideals in the service of medieval times
Hanzová, Barbora
At the end of the 12th century, the interest of history grows in the area of preaching. The antique heroic tales are changed into the sermonic exemplum; this change is described in the comparison of the story about human victim (Tubach, F. C. Index exemplorum, n. 2745), which is used by Livius and in tract De quattuor virtutibus cardinalibus, Gesta Romanorum and Postila Zderasiensis from Czech provenance, 15th century.
