Counterterrorism strategies as a consequence of terrorism: understanding United Kingdom's CONTEST 2018
Orozbakieva, Aizhan ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Aliyev, Huseyn (referee) ; Biagini, Erika (referee)
The relative peace that the world citizens enjoy today keeps being sabotaged by forces that kill and injure innocent civilians via terrorist attacks. In recent times, a number of violent attacks took place between 2013 and 2017 in all parts of the world. The territories that have been affected the most are the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and Western Europe. While terrorism in the MENA region, for instance, was mostly carried out by local forces, in Western Europe it was either external powers or domestic perpetrators who have been indoctrinated by foreign radicals. Western European states started becoming more cautious and alert. As a consequence of terrorism, new counterterrorism strategies have been written and implemented. The following research project seeks to analyse and interpret the United Kingdom's counterterrorism strategy in order to understand the dynamics of the legitimisation of security- oriented policies. The UK has been selected as a case study because it has predominantly struggled with the phenomenon of Northern-Irish related terrorism, long before the infamous September 11th , 2001 attacks in the US. Post-2001, the UK has been mostly targeted by jihadi- inspired terrorism. In response to the growing threat, the country initiated and implemented strategies to reduce...
EU and UK space security policies through the lens of historical institutionalism
Teale, Jennifer ; Butler, Eamonn (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
The main purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between the EU and UK in terms of space defence policy developed from the viewpoint of historical institutionalism. As a research objective, it is intended to assess the nature of historical institutionalism as a concept and its applications to space defence policy. Another objective is to trace the historical development of the relationships between the EU and the UK in the space sector. Finally, this historical development is discussed through the lens of historical institutionalism. The attainment of these aims and objectives requires an optimal choice of methodology and research design. This study has been guided by the principles of interpretivism, a dominant philosophical stance in social studies. This philosophy emphasises the role of interpretations in the attainment of knowledge due to a lack of absolute truth, as according to interpretivism, the truth depends on the observer and their interpretations. In line with this philosophical stance, this research is conducted using an inductive approach, which stipulates theory development, hypothesis formulation, or new proposition statements based on observations. This contrasts with deductive testing of existing research hypotheses. The choice of an inductive approach has...

Vondrášková, Veronika ; Pekáček, Ondřej (advisor) ; Klásková, Markéta (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims to explore the use of the terms "populism" and "populist" in UK daily broadsheets. a change in the use of this term depending on a previous study conducted in the United Kingdom more than a decade ago by T. Bale, S. van Kessel and P. Taggart. In addition to comparing previously identified results, there is an attempt to reveal differences in the use of the term between diaries through their ideological preference. The articles published by The Independent, The Guardian, The Times, and The Telegraph in one and a half months at the beginning of 2019 are analysed. The results of the content analysis of systematically selected articles reveal results that do not differ in many cases from previous study. Difference is found in the situation who (ie person, event, institution) is most often referred to as "populist", the fact that the term "populist" " is still used up to be used up to three times more often than "populism". The difference is also found in the use of terms in the political genre, where the terms are now used more often as a mere adjective without a deeper description than it was before. Regarding the differences between the broadsheets according to their political preferences, differences are found that daily newspapers leaning to the right use the terms in...

National Resilience in CyberSpace: The UK's National Cyber Security Strategy Evolving Response to Dynamic Cyber Security Challenges
Johnson, Kailyn ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee)
Criminals and other threat actors are adapting to the growing reliance individuals, organisations, and nations have upon technology and the internet and have augmented their capabilities to be oriented in that direction for malevolent purposes. Cyberspace has become an extremely large vulnerability for countries because it facilitates any person with access to a computer or other technology along with malicious intent, to cause harm. The increased risk people and organisations now face in cyberspace is not isolated to just them. Nations now are also at an increased risk because of the evolving ubiquity of cyberspace and technology. States are at risk of cyber threats because of vulnerabilities in individual citizens and organisations. Nations have now become intended targets by a larger spectrum of threat actors. This research examines how the United Kingdom has developed their specific national cyber security strategy to improve national resilience to threats, and how well the UK government adapts to an ever- changing threat landscape. The UK is still deficient in the appropriate and thorough execution of their proposed strategies and strategic policies to attain national resilience and security. There have been strides to achieve that goal, but the national strategy continues to fail to...
