External relations of entities with limited recognition
Baghdasaryan, Mikayel ; Trávníčková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Halimzai, Pamir (referee)
Numerous renowned scholars have researched the problem of state recognition. Moreover, the importance of this issue does not need a particular presentation. This paper, will attempt to take yet another look on the subject of state recognition. It will define a state as an actor of international relations. It also will present a theoretical background to the issue of recognition of the states, as it has evolved from the beginning of the past century. By maintaining a descriptive type of qualitative research strategy, followed by normative approach the paper will give a complete overview in terms of theory, but also the practical challenges of obtaining recognition and conducting external relations as an unrecognized state. As a case study, the work will discuss the external relations of Republic of China, Republic of Kosovo and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The main purpose of this work is to discuss the challenges for unrecognized states and the impact of recognition status on the populations of unrecognized states. The work finds that lack of state recognition makes it almost impossible, for the respective actors, the participation in intergovernmental organizations, which is likely to have a direct impact on the people of the de facto states.
Risk Analysis of Sino-American Military Conflict: The Trends in China-US Military Relationship
Šetina, Martin ; Maslowski, Nicolas (advisor) ; Rolenc, Jan Martin (referee)
The ascent of China to a global power status has created a new wave of theoretical discourse on what this means for the future of international relations. The general consensus on a unipolar order of international relations is slowly giving way to discourse. The time of polarity shift in the system is associated with a likely conflict between the descending hegemon and the ascending power (Snyder 2002; Mearsheimer 2010). This theoretical background suggest that in the future, we might witness a military conflict between the US and China. On the other side of the spectrum is a more optimistic view of China's rise, which emphasizes the role of economic interdependence and the extreme cost of any aggressive foreign policy that would escalate the conflict potential between China and the US (Ikenberry 2008; Kang 2007; Fravel 2010). This assumption of a future military conflict between the US and China is at the center of this research. In the following pages I will explore the idea of a military conflict between the US and China in an in-depth analysis of the most contested and conflict-prone issues between China and the US: the future of Taiwan and the Senkaku Island dispute.

Soft power in Taiwan's diplomatic practice
Nová, Šárka ; Peterková, Jana (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
Due to its fragile position in the international community, Taiwan has used soft power projection and public diplomacy tools to present its values and to enforce its national interests. This work identifies and examines principal sources and instruments of soft power implemented in Taiwan's diplomatic practice. Taiwan is attractive to other countries especially for its values, culture and economic strength. It currently enhances its influence mainly via cultural projects, educational programs, foreign policy practice, economic soft power, gastrodiplomacy and media, specifically focusing on development and humanitarian aid, active participation in international bodies and clarifying its standpoint towards PRC, celebrity diplomacy, and on publishing foreign language books and informational texts about the country. It will be crucial for the future of Taiwan's public diplomacy to either focus on areas that have not been attractive so far, or to use the strategy of niche diplomacy. With better institutional coordination, well-targeted public diplomacy strategy and national brand making, Taiwan can continue in making its world image better.

Bednář, Ondřej ; Knotková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Dubský, Zbyněk (referee)
The thesis deals with bilateral relations in strategic triangle China, Taiwan and USA, taking into account impact of the presidents of each of the country in period from 2000 to 2012. The author is trying to analyze development of bilateral relations between each of the country in two areas, political and economic. Development of geoeconomic situation in Asian- Pacific region i also considered in the thesis. At the beginning of the millenium the relations between USA and Taiwan were prospering due to new approach of president Bush, but under influence of global political issues, he gradually changed his attitude toward Taiwan. On contrary Bush from the beginning of his tenure did not maintain such warm relation with China, however he changed his approach significantly after 2001. President Obama, whose advent was marked with more conciliatory approach, did not manage to improve the relation considerably. The Taiwan- China relations during tenure of the first DPP's president were severed by his attitude toward Taiwan independency. After the change of presidents in 2008, deepening of mutual political, economical and cultural cooperation reached historical levels, due to Kuomintang's president whose policy is toward China is more conciliatory.
