Merleau-Ponty's use of painting experience for critique of perception
Titová, Aneta ; Rybák, David (advisor) ; Pelcová, Naděžda (referee)
The thesis Merleau-Ponty's Use of Painting Experience for Critique of Perception discusses the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and his contribution to perception of corporeality and the body, and especially to use of perception in the area of arts, based on the idea that the truthfulness of the object of our perception is not identical with its real image. The aim of the thesis is to outline the issue of living encounter of subject and object of perception. Besides that, it describes the philosophies of Merleau-Ponty's precursors, namely of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, whose work served to him as a source of inspiration. The second objective of the thesis is to describe life and work of the French painter Paul Cézanne, whose art and specific world view inspired Merleau-Ponty's essay named Eye and Mind. The crucial influences on Paul Cézanne's life and artistic evolution were his unbalanced nature, reactions of the society to his work, and the scenery of Provence, the region where he spent major part of his life. The thesis also compares Cézanne's work with some artistic movements, among them impressionism, which he first followed and later abandoned to be able to create purely on the basis of a careful study of nature and his environment, which he attempted to imitate accurately in his...
The Motif of Machine in Descartes' Metaphysics
Sedlická, Denisa ; Rybák, David (advisor) ; Hauser, Michael (referee)
The master's thesis discusses basic elements of metaphysics by René Descartes. The first part of the thesis focuses on his personal life because certain events shaped and influenced his further actions and ideas. To understand the context of time, the paper presents history knowledge that is relevant to the topic. René Descartes is still known today for his philosophical ideas which helped to develop findings in the field of metaphysics. During his lifetime, that is the first half of the 17th century, natural sciences were gaining in popularity. The thesis follows up with mathematization and geometrization of nature. Descartes' basic premise of knowledge is methodical skepticism which ultimately results in his first personal certainty of philosophy. Next part focuses on the clarification of the dualistic concept of two different substances - rez extensa and res cogitans. The largest and most important part deals with the mechanical conception of the human body. René Descartes believes that the human body is a machine operated by mechanical principles. The thesis introduces a systematic description of the body which logically justifies the primary ideas of this French philosopher. KEYWORDS René Descartes, methaphysics, dualism, mind, body, God, machine, mathematics, geometry
Religion and Philosphy - T. G. Masaryk
Florianová, Tereza ; Hogenová, Anna (advisor) ; Rybák, David (referee)
This thesis aims to characterize the way philosopher and politician Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk viewed philosophy and religion. Since an individual's thinking in these aspects is formed gradually in line with one's life experiences and events, it is necessary to discuss some parts of his life for a deeper understanding of the issue at hand. These not only had influence on the formation of the above-mentioned views, but the very approach that Masaryk adopted in these situations and causes has a considerable value itself. For example the Hilsner trials or the issue of the authenticity of the Manuscripts - in both cases Masaryk had a clear opinion he would stick to, despite sharp criticism he had to face. Some philosophers, thinkers and clergymen also had a major influence on Masaryk. From a religious point of view, he most likely took on the thoughts of Jesus and Hus. On the philosophical level, it is difficult to choose the most influential one, but this position would most likely be occupied by Plato, whom Masaryk as a philosopher highly respected. On the other hand, Masaryk himself fundamentally influenced some of his followers, for example Jan Patočka, whose struggle with Masaryk's philosophy is also discussed. Although Masaryk's concept of religion and philosophy is a very complex subject, we can...
Thinking in unconcealedness
Zajíc, Tomáš ; Hogenová, Anna (advisor) ; Rybák, David (referee)
The aim of this thesis is the study of the topic of thinking in the works of Martin Heidegger as one of the possibilities which is one's innermost capability and which is not a mere tool for discovering, but belongs to the way of one's being. Thinking is being mindful of that which is worth remembering and which in itself opens the possibility of encountering the world and one's own self in its original clarity. Through thinking of closeness, the thesis gets to Heidegger's concept of the fourfold and enowning of the world into things and continues with the topic of mortality of one's own Dasein. The thesis then thematises Heidegger's thinking of Greek ALETHEIA as a clearing for showing of a being, which has in its own self remained unthought in the history of philosophy and in which Heidegger sees the role of thinking in the times of completion of the metaphysics. In the interpretation of language, it reveals how language is given to humans, or rather humans are given to language and how language is the house of being and how it essentially constitutes thinking. Alongside language, poesy is examined, in which language speaks as language and where language is shown as the harmony of silence. Poesy is then approached as acquiring measure and Heidegger's interpretation of the nature of human's housing...
