Determinants of car-sharing use: Autonapůl Case study
Baudyšová, Anita ; Ščasný, Milan (advisor) ; Pavlovová, Anna (referee)
This thesis investigates car-sharing use by subscribers of that time of Auton- apůl, the longest operated App platform in the Czech Republic. First, we analyse the mileage of the App subscribers and survey respondents, finding different behaviour patter among the users who did not participate in the sur- vey. Survey participants use the App more actively (89% with non-zero km) and drive on average more (154 km a month) than the App users who did not agree to participate in the survey (65% and 85 km, respectively). Then, we analyse demand on kilometres driven by survey respondents, treating the potential selectivity due to reported zero mileage. We compare OLS and two selectivity models - two-stage Heckman and two-part models. The study also examines the impact of usage frequency on kilometres driven. Those who drive more frequently also drive more - users who used the App at least once a week drive almost ten times more kilometres than those who used the App less than once a month (395 km versus 53 km a month). We find that age, use for leisure purposes, satisfaction, and having children are associated positively, and car ownership is associated negatively with mileage driven by car-sharing. This study enhances the topic of car-sharing by examining determinants of car-sharing use and its underlying...
Do Left-handers and Left-footers Have a Competitive Advantage in Sports?
Hadžić, Aner ; Krištoufek, Ladislav (advisor) ; Pavlovová, Anna (referee)
Left-sided athletes are often perceived as better performing as they can leverage their minority status within the sports world. While various specific left-sided athletes, such as Lionel Messi and Rafael Nadal, perform at the very top of their disciplines, these might be simply non-representative outliers. The current thesis puts the hy- pothesis of left-sided over-performance to test via a battery of tests and regressions. My thesis thoroughly analyses the prevalence and the performance of left-handed/left-footed athletes across 5 differ- ent sports. As majority of the current studies are focusing only on a few performance metrics in the given sport, my work broad- ens the knowledge on the topic since it compares the performance of left-sided and right-sided athletes in many categories in order to cover a great portion of the in-game action. Furthermore, this thesis also expands the current understanding of the (potential) left-sided advantage in direct encounters between both teams and individu- als, achieving so by implementing predictive Bradley-Terry models that are based on past matches. The overall results are rather sur- prising: in the majority of the performance comparisons between left-handers/left-footers and right-handers/right-footers, no signifi- cant difference between the two...
Small Molecules as Immune Modulators in Anticancer Therapy
Pavlovová, Anna ; Míšek, Jiří (advisor) ; Smrček, Stanislav (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to summarize knowledge about several selected therapeutic targets used for cancer immunotherapy and small molecules that can have an immunomodulatory effect on these targets. This is a relatively new and attractive topic in the field of biomedical sciences, which is constantly evolving. Some small molecules have already been approved for treatment of specific cancer diseases, and many more are currently undergoing various stages of clinical trials. This work should provide the reader with an overview of possible approaches to modulate the immune system using small molecules. Key words: small molecules, immunotherapy, cancer, checkpoint inhibitors, tumor microenvironment
Determinants of Life Satisfaction in the Czech Republic and their Development over Time
Pavlovová, Anna ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Khymych, Olha (referee)
This work examines the reported life satisfaction in the Czech Republic over the period between 1991 and 2016. The relationships between various individual characteristics and reported life satisfaction are analysed using the ordinary least squares and the results are compared across time. This work extends the existing literature not only by providing a more up-to-date analysis of the correlates of life satisfaction in the Czech Republic but also by analysing them in a wider time horizon. Some relationships were found rather stable over the considered period (for example, those associated with health, satisfaction with institutions or with political beliefs). Even though higher education and higher income were not strictly associated with higher satisfaction, the differences in satisfaction of individuals belonging to the lower and upper deciles of income are significant throughout the whole period. On the other hand, some associations have changed substantially over time (e.g. those related to being a student). Contrary to the existing literature on the period of transition, life satisfaction in the Czech Republic appears to be U-shaped in age during the whole considered period including the 90s. However, the turning points and the exact shape of the relationship changed over time. Keywords life...
High-Frequency Food Prices: Evidence from the Czech Republic
Pavlovová, Anna ; Havránek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kukačka, Jiří (referee)
With increasing engagement in on-line shopping accelerated by the events of 2020, what can we learn about prices and their rigidity in the on-line sector? We collect an extensive dataset of scraped daily prices for four on-line grocery retailers from the Czech Republic from January 2020 to April 2021. We find substantial di erences in pricing among the retailers, including the impact of interest rate changes and the introduction of lockdowns on the probability of price change. Price rigidity depends significantly on the retailer and the assumptions imposed on temporary price changes. The mean number of all price changes among retailers ranges between 3.10 and almost 11 per year. Depending on the definition of excluded temporary price changes, retailers change prices permanently on average between 0.68 to 4.04 times per year. We show that a more in-depth analysis of temporary price changes is crucial for a robust assessment of price rigidity.
