Usage of English in Videogames and its Effects on Vocabulary of Gamers

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to reveal the possible correlation between playing videogames and vocabulary of gamers. The theoretical part of the thesis contains a brief definition of the second language acquisition, description of various approaches to this issue and the basic differences between first and second language acquisition. The practical part comprises analysis of the results of the questionnaire that was designed specifically for the purpose of the thesis and which is included in the appendix. The results are analyzed from different perspectives and synthesis of those should offer objective information about the existence, or nonexistence, of the aforementioned correlation.
Image of British Culture in ESOL Textbooks

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the image of British culture in selected ESOL textbooks by evaluating the amount of content associated with it. The objectives are to discover the extent into which the culture is implemented in the selected sample - New English File series - as well as the series' focus on either elite Culture involving the great products of civilisation or culture in terms of behaviours, beliefs, and life patterns, and what the balance of its forms of representation is. Two major intertwined parts are covered within this paper: a specialist literature review and a content analysis, where the latter builds upon the theoretical background established in the former. Role of Affixation in the English Pronunciation

The aim of this work is to explore and describe the relationship between the processes of afixation and the changes it triggers in the sound system of the English language. The theoretical part presents a classification of inflectional and selected derivational affixes and it scrutinizes the impact they exert on word stress placement and related aspects of pronunciation. The practical part contains a research the goal of which was to collect vocabulary from general English textbooks and to analyse the amassed data using the apparatus established in the theoretical part. The principal objective was to observe to what extent the investigated phenomenon is truly reflected in basic vocabulary and also to suggest which particular sections of the classification system could be beneficially employed in teaching correct pronunciation of English vocabulary. Neologisms in Arundhati Roy's God of Small Things

This thesis focuses on neologisms in the novel The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. It aims at describing their morpho-syntactic features, the word-formation processes from which they result, and their contextual function in the analysed text. The original text is compared with the Czech translation and the ways of translating neologisms in Czech are explored. The thesis explores three hypotheses. Firstly, the predominant word-formation process employed in creating neologisms in the text is likely to be compounding. Secondly, the Czech translation is expected to contain fewer neologisms than the original. Thirdly, it is supposed that the distribution of neologisms is not balanced throughout the book, and that their frequency will increase in those chapters which offer the children's perspective. Out of these three hypotheses the first and the third one were confirmed. The validity of the second hypothesis could be neither confirmed nor refuted, for that would require further research on the Czech translation of the text, which was beyond the scope of this thesis.
Aspects of Politeness in a Classroom of English as a Second Language

This thesis deals with politeness and its realization in a classroom discourse. The theoretical part describes the most influential politeness theories and also the findings on the topic of teaching pragmatics and linguistic politeness. The research in the thesis focuses on analysis of teachers' verbal realizations of politeness as found in the recordings of four English lessons. The research was designed to verify the two hypotheses: (1) teachers are basically polite in a classroom of English as a second language and (2) politeness strategies of Czech teachers of English differ from those of native speaking teachers. The analytical part adopts the viewpoint of Brown and Levinson's positive and negative politeness. The last part of the thesis aims at summarizing the implications that this thesis, its theoretical summary and its research, have for teaching English as a second language.
Uptalk and its Implementation in Teaching English

This thesis deals with the current phenomenon of uptalk. The theoretical part provides a brief overview of the phenomenon, including its characteristics in terms of phonetics and phonology, geographical and linguistic origin, occurrence in contemporary English, relation to gender and functions the pattern fulfils in interactions. The practical part focuses on the implementation of uptalk in teaching English. It aims at producing a lesson plan on the phenomenon and its subsequent application in class. Furthermore, it provides findings of a questionnaire survey conducted among the participants of the implementation project in order to get their feedback on the lesson plan.

This bachelor thesis explores the phenomenon of underage and teenage pregnancy in the context of British culture, focusing on factors such as its historical evolution, starting with the phenomenon of the Fallen Woman. It analyses the twentieth century political rhetoric of Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair and explores the cultural influences of the chav phenomenon and class hatred, evaluating the significant media impact of the Little Britain (British comedy television show) character Vicky Pollard on the perception of the phenomenon of underage and teenage pregnancy.
The translation and stylistic analysis of five chapters of the book Rid of Me: A Story by Kate Shatz

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the translation of work of fiction from English language into Czech language. The first part of the thesis consists of translation of Prologue and first five chapters of Rid of Me: A Story by American author Kate Schatz, a novel loosely based on music album Rid of Me by English musician PJ Harvey. The second part is theoretical and deals with the analysis of the translating process and justification of selected issues according to theories of translation.
The Challenges of translating experimental fiction as demonstrated on the novel House Mother Normal by B. S. Johnson

This bachelor thesis explores the challenges of translating fiction written in English into Czech. In the practical part, a sample translation is presented of two sections from the 1971 experimental novel House Mother Normal by the English author B. S. Johnson. The theoretical part part discusses challenges encountered during the translation process: choice of register, polysemy and ambiguity, word play, medical terminology, and elements of foreign culture. Under each topic, examples from the novel are listed and commented on. The offered solutions are based on the translation theory developed by the Czech scholar Jiří Levý in the 1960s. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to our knowledge of the art of translation and to provide sources of inspiration for other translators. KEY WORDS translation, House Mother Normal, B. S.
