To Close One's Eyes Forever: Husserl, Sartre, and Death
Kvapil, Ondřej ; Kouba, Pavel (advisor) ; Blecha, Ivan (referee) ; Němec, Václav (referee)
In the present thesis, I examine the concept of death in Husserl, whose analyses of death have stayed aside of philosophical debates for decades, and in Sartre, whose analyses of death have slowly ended up on the periphery of these debates. Against the backdrop of the thematic chapters, I will focus on the ancient thesis of the unthinkability of death, put it in question and finally, articulate an even more ancient relationship between death and thought. In my first chapter, I do not seek to provide a historical analysis of the genesis of the concept of death in Husserl's phenomenology, nor a systematic study of the place death occupies in his transcendental idealism. On the basis of the often fragmentary manuscripts, I strive to reconstruct Husserl's notion of death in its plasticity, attempt to think it through to its consequence, and then formulate its implicit presuppositions. In the second chapter, I confront the mainstream reading of Sartre on death, according to which Sartre represents an Epicurean among the phenomenologists, and show that this reading turns, in fact, the meaning of his analyses upside down. Before doing so, however, I will revise the context in which Sartre has been read so far, freeing him from the schematic comparison with Heidegger and arguing that regarding death he is...
What is Phenomenology? The Inevitability of the Clash between Husserl and Heidegger
Kvapil, Ondřej ; Novák, Aleš (advisor) ; Nitsche, Martin (referee)
Based on the explicit Husserl-Heidegger polemic, which concerned the ''Phenomenology'' entry for Encyclopaedia Britannica, my thesis captures conflict between the two protagonists precisely when it becomes direct. Tracing the main issues of their dispute, I will firstly demonstrate that the conflict is not a consequence of mutual misunderstanding, but rather a disagreement coming from the core itself of their respective theories. It could therefore not have been avoided. Secondly, I will show that the leading intentions of both traditional versions of phenomenology are not only irreconcilable, but essentially contradictory.
The Meaning of the Question of Being: An Interpretation of an intrinsic Connection between Being and the No-thing in Heidegger's What is Metaphysics?
Kvapil, Ondřej ; Kouba, Pavel (advisor) ; Ritter, Martin (referee)
This paper deals, building on a ground defined by Heidegger's What is Metaphysics?, with a single question: in what sense do being and the no-thing belong together? This question is being addressed at two parallel levels. Based on a detailed interpretation of key text passages that have often been examined insufficiently due to their lack of accessibility, it aims to gain a complex insight into the issue and interpret it in its many nuances of meaning. At the same time, its aim is to articulate a general philosophical significance of the intrinsic connection between being and the no-thing; to what extent it affects the innermost intention of Heidegger's fundamental ontology as such, i.e. raising the question of the meaning of being. The paper builds on a phenomenological description of the original experience of the no-thing and captures a transformation of a human being into a pure Da-sein, which he goes through during this experience. Since the experience of the no-thing according to Heidegger is identical to the basic mood of dread, this piece of work depicts it in relation to seemingly similar, but in their meaning actually opposite moods: fear and, most importantly, abysmal boredom. Subsequently, it puts forward an interpretation of the no-thing's own ontological significance and thus...

Development of mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa during the period 1990-2009
Kvapil, Ondřej ; Hulíková Tesárková, Klára (advisor) ; Burcin, Boris (referee)
The aim of this study was to compare the development of mortality level within individual phases of human life during the period 1990-2009 in selected countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. Two groups of countries were compared. The first group included countries only marginally afflicted with HIV/AIDS disease. The second group contained populations with higher proportion of people with HIV infection. Differences between the two groups were revealed in areas of age-specific mortality rates and various indicators of probability of dying within individual phases of human life. Differences were apparent in all examined areas (child, adult and overall mortality). Attention was also paid to causes of death. In this part of analysis, a different mortality structure by cause was observed between the representatives of both groups of countries.

The aim of this thesis was to compare the development of mortality during the period 1990-2009 in selected countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. Two groups of countries were compared. The first group included countries only marginally afflicted with HIV/AIDS disease. The second group contained countries, where prevalence of HIV infection was higher than 10 % of population during the observed period. Differences between the two groups of countries were revealed in areas of age-specific mortality rates and decomposition of changes in life expectancy at birth. Basic analysis of causes of death was also performed, but it was complicated due to lack of data. Cause of death structure was compared between two countries. Republic of Mauritius was selected as proxy of first group of countries and Republic South Africa represented group of countries afflicted with HIV/AIDS. Differences in causes of death structure were confirmed in areas of standardised mortality rate.
