Discrimination of the Roma population in the area of housing in the Žižkov area in Prague
Šeráková, Leona ; Jakoubek, Marek (advisor) ; Jakoubková Budilová, Lenka (referee)
The primary purpose of the bachelor's thesis is not to point out the issue of discrimination against Roma in the area of Prague-Žižkov, a place often labeled as an excluded locality, but it is an attempt to explain why is possible to have a certain adequacy of the reason given by property owners for not providing rent to Roma groups. This quest for explanation takes place through the search for answers to questions in contexts. Considering that the issue is examined for the period from 1989 to the present, it is necessary to focus not only on certain discrimination but also on whatever reason it is difficult for the Roma population to obtain a lease in the given locality, taking into account the changes that took place in 1989 within our society. In the end, the tools used by the institutions to solve this problem in Prague-Žižkov are pointed out, they appear to be possibly effective based on the data found.

Comparison of two Slovak Roma / Gypsy settlements in eastern Slovakia from an ethnographic perspective
Malík, Robert ; Jakoubková Budilová, Lenka (advisor) ; Jakoubek, Marek (referee)
This ethnographic study compares the sociocultural and economic status differences between two geographically and historically close Roma settlements in the Eastern Slovak region of Spiš. Using Pierre Bourdieu's concept of symbolic power, this study identifies factors that contribute to variations in integration and access to sociocultural and economic resources. Oscar Lewis' theory of the culture of poverty provides a complementary perspective on the past and present of both settlements.Participant observation, unstructured semi-structured interviews, and archive work with civil registers were the primary data collection methods used. The findings suggest that the more integrated settlement has greater access to symbolic resources, resulting in higher sociocultural and economic status. Conversely, the less integrated settlement is perceived as having insufficient access to these resources, leading to lower sociocultural and economic status. The study highlights the importance of integration and access to symbolic resources in shaping social, cultural, and economic power, offering a deeper understanding of the intricate power dynamics and inequalities between the majority and Roma communities.
Between waking and dreaming: Cultural transformations of a sleep paralysis
Jedinák, Boris ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Jakoubek, Marek (referee)
On one side, the diploma thesis examines the phenomenon of sleep paralysis (hereinafter referred to as SP), its cultural conceptualizations in archaic folklore in the Czech lands and in contemporary (modern) folklore - mainly it is focused on individual and collective explanations of its meanings. The theoretical part briefly outlines the character of SP from the perspective of modern psychiatry and the archaic folkloric interpretations of this sleep disorder appearing in various non-European cultures. The theoretical part is mostly focused on the phenomenon of the moth, the phantom, which the author considers to be one of possible understandings of this sleep disorder in the legends and customs of archaic Czech folklore. The research part of the thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork. The aim was to map out, on the basis of ethnographic interviews with people who have experienced SP, how SP can be interpreted individually today, how this individual interpretation overlaps with the folkloric manifestations of the sleep disorder described in the theoretical part, relevant to a given cultural setting, and how pre-existing cultural models appearing in contemporary popular culture and modern folklore shape the individual experience of SP and the personal interpretation of informants. In yet another...
Ethnic identification and food. The case of Czechs in Serbian Banat.
Kroužková, Tereza ; Jakoubková Budilová, Lenka (advisor) ; Jakoubek, Marek (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the perception of "traditional" food as part of the identity of Czechs living in Serbian Banat. The thesis describes and documents the food that the respondents consider traditional for their culture. The thesis describes the cultural aspects of eating and emphasizes the food of the compatriots from the perspective of anthropology. Participant observation supplemented by polostructured and informal interviews is chosen as the method of data collection. The thesis will mainly focus on the subjective perception of traditional food among the local residents regardless of age and gender. The aim of the work is to create a comprehensive overview of the perception of traditional food of Czechs living in Serbian Banat. The work will also try to answer the question of what food means to the locals and what is the relationship between it and their identity. At the same time, it will open the question of how the idea of "traditional food" is constructed and what role food plays in "Czechness" in the regional communities. It will be based primarily on the socio-cultural aspect of food, which is not only a biological source of nutritional value for humans, but also a symbol (Fischler 1988) and a way of self-identification (Fox 2014).
Contemporary handicraft of small producers and strategies of interaction with their consumers
Jarolím, Jakub ; Jakoubek, Marek (advisor) ; Kreisslová, Sandra (referee)
This work is focused on craftsmanship performed by individual craftsmen or by small companies. The author is a leatherworker by his profession and therefore he is an insider in this field. The paper is considering relationships between manufacturers of craft goods and consumers of these goods. These relationships are not just determined by price and utility value of products, but also by symbolic value of these artifacts in the first place. Relationships between manufacturers and consumers include a lot of rituals. Artifacts are usually deemed "traditional" by manufactures and also by consumers. The concept of tradition is commodified and used as a marketing tool in order to increase profit. There is a lot of clichés in the studied field, such as the national myth of "golden Czech hands" or about mythical person of Tomáš Baťa. Important princip how to establish relationships between manufactuers and consumers is geographical distance. Manufactuers set boundaries between each other and if there is someone who is not holding line of traditional craftsman procedure firmly, this wrongdoer can became ritually unclean. Another important principle crucial to set up good relationships between consumers and manufacturers is sustainable development principle. There is a lot of cooperation between different...
A comparison of selected anthropological theories in view of their pragmatic value
Hájek, Daniel ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Jakoubek, Marek (referee)
The study deals with the problem of applicability of two anthropological theories, structural functionalism and interpretive anthropology of Clifford Geertz. By applicability is meant what concrete difference using of one or the other theory brings about in ethnography. Each of the theories is at first thoroughly examined with emphasis on its possible aims, assumptions, and consequences for an ethnographer. Then each theory is put to test in examination of one particular ethnography associated with the theory. Evans-Pritchard's The Nuer serves as an instance of structural functionalism. Clifford Geertz's Negara as an example of interpretative analysis. Structural functionalism is shown to provide an ethnographer with a much more definite guidance which contributes to better possibilities of verification and comparability of the results than interpretive anthropology. Apart from the main subject, the study is concerned with more general questions, especially related to non-existence of a paradigm in anthropology and some of its causes.

Beseda, Jan ; Ezzeddine, Petra (advisor) ; Jakoubek, Marek (referee)
All in one sack: a media anthropology of the Roma This dissertation brings a new view to Czech media sciences on the subject of ethnic minority. The purposes of this work is to demonstrate: how the Roma perceive representations of themselves in printed media, how they are perceived, and how the image of the Roma is constructed in print media. From an anthropologist's standpoint, the topic of this research paper is being analyzed from an emic point of view, meaning from the participant's perspective.
