Estate dress of the Catholic priesthood and its image in the visual arts. History - Changes - Meaning
Martinek, Radek ; Royt, Jan (advisor) ; Hlobil, Ivo (referee) ; Jonová, Jitka (referee)
In terms of the current rapidly growing investigative interest in the history of clothing (whether according to seasons, professional groups or geographic areas) the estate dress of Christian priesthood stands rather aside. It is caused also by the fact that within the overall history of clothing this subject represents a very specific group characterized by uninterrupted continuity, rich symbolism affirmed not only by the church regulations, but also by a local tradition. The theological teaching on priesthood and priestly estate formed as early as in the early centuries, nevertheless it did not remain a mere teaching, but it also had a practical impact on the life of a clergyman and his surroundings. The priest became the guarantor of social order and its associated values. Thus, a visible distinction between the priest and the rest of the community got even a symbolic dimension. This dissertation traces the ways in which the teaching on priesthood and priestly mission changed in the Christian community on the background of the general Church history. The priestly dress clearly communicates how a priest was perceived by a community, by the Church (or more precisely by the canon law), as well as how he perceived himself. All this is compared with extant visual material and analysis of surviving...
Woodcarving in 13th century in Bohemia and Moravia. The chapters from the beginnings of woodcarving tradition in Central Europe

Synopsis The work covers the first two periods of life of the art historian Zdeněk Wirth. Wirth was one of the most influential figures of Czech cultural history of the first half of 20th century. He significantly infuenced domestic art history, he became one of the most active trendsetters as regards Modem Style in architecture in Bohemia, and, last but not least, he had merit in a distinct strengthening of position of the club-based and state care of historical monuments. In the period between the two World Wars Wirth was able, due to his high position, exercise influence over other areas of Czechoslovak culture and science - history, archival science, librarianship, museums, art education, intemational cultural contacts, theatre, cinema. Taking into account Wirth's scientific and organizational activities, the work examines also intellectual development of art historical sphere in our milieu then, functioning of art historical clubs and organizations, editor' s office practice of selected art historical periodicals, theoretical foundations of domestic conservationists and...

Richard Moest, author-forger of the Klosterneuburg Virgin and Child on a Lion?
Hlobil, Ivo
The paper recapitulates in detail the long debate and the different views on the authenticity of the Klosterneuburg Madonna (National Gallery Prague) as major work of Master of Michle Virgin and Child from around 1345. The paper's author bring new arguments for the carving's authenticity. He believes that the Klosterneuburg Virgin and Child on Lion was originally part of the choir stalls in a church in Moravia or Bohemia.
On the Petrographic Analysis of the Bern Pietà and the Pietà in St. Petersburg
Hlobil, Ivo
The article points to the diametrically different results of the petrographic analysis of matter, from which two Pietà of the Beautiful Style around 1400 in Bern and St. Petersburg were allegedly made, as can be found in the current art historical literature.
Art and Cult at Frauenkirche in Nuremberg. A Contribution to the Interpretation of the Sculpture in the third quarter of the 14th century in the Central European Region
Srovnal, Filip ; Ottová, Michaela (advisor) ; Klípa, Jan (referee) ; Hlobil, Ivo (referee)
The thesis presents a global art-historical analysis of the Church of Our Lady in Nuremberg (the so-called Frauenkirche) as an important monument of Central European sculpture of the time of Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV (1316-1378) and as a witness of the solid connection of art and liturgy. The thesis consists of five chapters, which deal with methodology, historical context, architecture, sculpture and liturgical praxis of the church. The most important aims are: to clarify the participation of Nuremberg patriciate and Charles IV in the church's erection and architectural form, to conduct a complex iconographic and formal-comparative analysis of the sculpture, especially of the atrium, and last but not least to discuss the still unreflected phenomenon of the collegium mansionariorum (mansionars), the priests appointed here, whose specific liturgical practice makes it possible to clarify many iconographic aspects of the paintings and especially of the sculpture.
Master Hartmann and the Swabian Woodcarving at the Beginning of the 15th Century
Hladká, Kateřina ; Homolka, Jaromír (advisor) ; Hlobil, Ivo (referee) ; Klípa, Jan (referee)
Master Hartmann and the Swabian Woodcarving at the Beginning of the 15th Century The stonemason Master Hartmann from Ulm is known to art historians already long time, but his role in Swabian woodcarving at the beginning of the 15th century, however, still evokes numerous questions. Although Hartmann is believed to work simultaneously in the hut and the woodcarving workshop, the average quality of his works, and the fact, that he was accepted as a citizen only in the year 1928, more than ten years after we encounter him in Ulm records for the first time, indicates certain complications of this hypothesis. In this doctoral thesis, Master Hartmann is studied from the perspective of social and cultural situation in Ulm at the beginning of the 15th century. Attention is given to his position in the hut organization on the construction of Ulm Minster and his artistic activity on the western façade, which in its iconographical concept reflects also the historical background. The second part of the thesis focuses on the woodcarving workshop, where the Altarpiece of Dornstadt was made, and on the phenomenon of wide distribution of this style around the entire Swabia. The Ulm workshop is presented in the context of the city and its minster hut, former local centers and even more distant regions. Around 1415,...
