The Reasons Behind the Success of the Pro-Israeli Lobby in the United States
Záhora, Jakub ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Fojtek, Vít (referee)
Since at least the 1970s, Israel has been benefiting hugely from the so-called "special relationship" with the United States. The US provides the Jewish state with considerable financial aid which reached $3 billion annually in the form of non-refundable grants in the 1990s. America also supplies Israel with modern military systems and American companies cooperate with their Israeli counterparts in developing new weapons, devices etc. US representatives also protect Israel from major diplomatic failures at the international forums like the UN. Some people believe that the American support for Israel is driven by moral imperatives, as Israel constitutes a shelter for the minority which experienced hundreds-of- years lasting hatred, with its ultimate expression being the Holocaust. This argument further states that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East and therefore it presents a natural choice for an ally of the United States. Others argue that Israel is an indispensable strategic asset, necessary for maintaining the American presence and securing the American interests in the region. However, all these points can be refuted. The often emphasized moral aspect omits the painful issue of Palestinian refugees forced out by Jewish forces in 1948-1949 and continued Israeli occupation of the Palestinian...

Bálint, Miroslav ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee) ; Fojtek, Vít (referee)
The American war in Vietnam was one of the Cold war conflict and United States had entered this war within their policy of communist detained. United States had supported France first. Later, they took political and military responsibility themselves. Despite many recommendations, US Military Command had chosen conventional way of fighting, which was based on large scale strikes against enemy to undermine his will. This strategy reflected US history of war success and technological superiority. But the main difference was theatre of conflict itself. The enemy was fighting guerrilla way and avoided large scale struggles. The only solution was to the application of counterinsurgency strategy, which was focused on winning "Hearts and minds" of Vietnamese population. Its development occurred in everyday fighting experience and combat troops had started to apply it successfully in many Vietnam areas. Unfortunately, American army wasn't able to apply this successful model across the board and insisted on conventional way of pacification till the end of the Vietnam war.
The American Left and Communist Czechoslovakia, 1956-1968
Géryk, Jan ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Fojtek, Vít (referee)
The main aim of this work is to compare the discourses and analyze the relations of the American and Czechoslovak intellectual Left between 1956 and 1968. It begins by Khrushchev's revelation of Stalinist crimes and by the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956 which created an atmosphere of disillusionment on the Left. The global Left of this period to a substantial extent ceased to be ideologically inspired by the Soviet Union and began to rethink the foundations of its thought. So, the 1960s are the period of the flourishing leftist thought. Authors are inspired by Marxist humanism and the New Left emerges, especially in the West. There were issues which existed beyond the ideological struggle of two Cold War blocs, but the different character of the regimes in the East and the West resulted in different approaches to these issues. At the same time, the mobility of ideas and their authors or supporters increased even across the Iron Curtain. Therefore, we could see some interesting encounters and clashes of different, even though still leftist, discourses. This work tries to depict the intellectual environment of the period by dealing with issues like philosophy of Man in the context of technological changes, the tactics of the struggle against the system or bureaucracy, the relation of...
