Hamiltonized America: The Analysis of the Broadway Musical's Influence
Zinková, Kristýna ; Kýrová, Lucie (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with a musical phenomenon called Hamilton: An American Musical, that premiered in 2015 in the United States, and to this day it has dominated the stage of Broadway. Hamilton became a phenomenon due to its untraditional interpretation. A historical story about the life of one of the Founding Fathers Alexander Hamilton and about the establishment of the USA is performed by minority actors and actresses of mostly African American or Latino origin and the classical Broadway singing was replaced with rapping. Thus, Hamilton represents a colour-blind casting musical. The musical does not present only historical chapters, but through the interpretation Hamilton points out current social and ethnic issues in the American society such as socio-economic inequality, ethnic tensions between minorities and the dominant group of society, immigration-related issues, and the unattainability of the mythical American Dream. During the 2016 United States Presidential Election Hamilton became a political tool when its cast and production team publicly supported one of the candidates, Hillary Clinton. My thesis analyses the influence of the musical on a political discourse and its role as a politically active factor and mediator. Simultaneously, given the character of the show, the thesis...
The Quiet Revolution and the subsequent political and social development in Quebec
Sluková, Kristýna ; Pondělíček, Jiří (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the Silent Revolution and its consequences concerning mainly the political and social sphere in Quebec. "Révolution tranquille" was an important part of the historical development of the Canadian province of Quebec. Thanks to this "great reformist leap," Quebec was liberated from a longtime conservative government that kept the entire province under the supervision of the Roman Catholic Church and rejected any progressive ideas that had been developing elsewhere in the Western world in the meantime. The period from the late 40's, when Maurice Duplessis became Prime Minister of Quebec, until the end of his reign in 1959, is sometimes sarcastically referred to as the Dark Ages, the so- called Grande Noirceur, literally translated as "The Great Darkness". The consequences of the revolution included not only a change in the political sphere, but also a considerable wave of secularization, reform of education, health care, the economy, a change in relations between the Francophone and Anglophone populations in the province, and last but not least, the beginning of the Quebec nationalist movement and its desire for an independent Quebec, which became the number one issue for several decades throughout Canada. The thesis consists of four basic chapters. The first chapter...
Environmental conflict; energy threat in Alaska
Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the phenomenon of energy security,...
Seal Hunting in the Canadian Arctic:Conflicting Perspectives on EU Regulation 1007/2009
Jírová, Anna ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Kýrová, Lucie (referee)
On September 16, 2009 the European parliament adopted a Regulation (EC) 1007/2009 prohibiting the seal products from being imported and placed on the European Union market. Adoption of a Seal trade ban was a result of an effective anti-sealing lobby and increasing public concern over the perceivably cruel seal hunting methods that emerged in reaction to growing popularity of seal fur in early 2000s. Even though the Seal ban includes an exception for Inuit who hunt seals traditionally for subsistence and depend on monetary income to maintain their traditions, it proved to be highly ineffective as the demand for all seal products declined dramatically, threatening Inuit way of life in the process. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the key actors involved in the conflict, specifically the Inuit, the European Union, animal welfare NGOs and the Canadian government and to contextualize and analyze the specific narratives of the seal hunting discourse and their implications. By looking at the motivation and justification of the EU Seal ban as well as the implications of the different perspectives on the issue, this research will try to test the hypothesis that the seal hunting discourse is based on a colonial mindset and that decolonization of the mind is yet to be achieved by Western society.
China's Accession to the World Trade Organization: Case study of U.S.- China trade disputes
Carhounová, Kristýna ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
The subject of this bachelor thesis is the case study of U.S-China trade disputes under the World Trade Organization (WTO) after China's accession to the WTO. Firstly I will briefly outline the US-China relations from 1949 to 2001. I will then focus on China's incentives of becoming a part of the multilateral system and the impact of China's accession to the WTO on US-China trade. Second part concentrates on the development of foreign trade between the US and China as well as on the structural problems of Chinese economy that prevents China from doing smooth business with the US. Appreciation of China's currency renminbi, huge trade deficit of the US, complicated access to the Chinese market and many others are all among the problematic areas. Even though China has pledged to fulfill a whole range of commitments, it doesn't always abide by the rules. Some of the cases mentioned often cause friction between China and its trading partners, including the US, which are often brought to the Dispute Settlement (DS) under the WTO. Following a brief outline of the DSM, I will then focus on the China's evolution in the Dispute settlement system. During the first years of China's membership in the WTO, the members rarely challenged China before the court. However, after the end of China's five-year...
Consequences of NAFTA Trade Agreement for the Car Industry in North America
Dobeš, Petr ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
The subject of this thesis is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), signed between the United States of America, Canada and Mexico and its impact on the automotive industry in North America between the years 1994, when NAFTA came into force, and 2009, when two major American car manufacturers, General Motors and Chrysler, went bankrupt during the global-scale recession and the industry changed significantly. The thesis is based on the theory of comparative advantages, as it was described by a British economist David Ricardo in the 19th century. It subscribes to the general principle that a free trade is beneficial to all engaged parties, because it enables more effective allocation of resources and provides for more specialization of production. The thesis argues NAFTA was a complex and ambitious international trade deal that had profound impact on the evolution of this branch of industry in the United States, Canada and Mexico, however its impact on the economy as a whole was limited and many of the changes, attributed to NAFTA, would likely have happened even without its passage due to the natural process of evolution of the industry and modernization. The creation of a continent-wide zone of free trade enabled local and foreign car makers to establish international supply chains that...
The Role of Greenland and Nunavut in International Relations in 1979-2009
Zettlitzerová, Radka ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
Greenland and Nunavut are territories with a limited measure of autonomy. Greenland obtained it's autonomy when the Greenland Home Rule Act came into effect. Nunavut instead, obtained it's autonomy from the moment it was created in 1999, via the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and the Nunavut Act.. Both Greenland and Nunavut have no authority to interfere with international affairs, but they do have options to get involved via different Inuit organizations (the majority of the population both Greenland and Nunavut are Inuits). This bachelor thesis, Role of Greenland and Nunavut in international relations in 1979 - 2009, aims to find an answer to the possibility of Greenland and Nunavut having an active part in international affairs (based on the documents mentioned above), if they can be considered of subjects of the international law and if some examples of their international involvement even can be mentioned. Even though according to their constitutional acts, niether Greenland nor Nunavut are allowed to act independently in matters of international affairs, the author of this thesis defends the hypothesis that in fact they can, participate in international discussions and even, on a limited scale, decide their own foreign policy. The first part of this thesis introduces a basic geographical,...
Nixon Shock" and the end of the Bretton Woods System
Šálený, Václav ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with an important turning point in the international monetary system, which took place in 1971, when American President Nixon, in his New Economic Policy, suspended the convertibility of the dollar into gold and thus ended the Bretton Woods system. This system had worked since the end of World War II and was characterized by fixed exchange rates and the dominant role of the U.S. dollar. The thesis deals with the structural problems of the Bretton Woods system and with domestic problems of the U.S. economy at the beginning of the 1970s, which together led President Nixon to end the system. The thesis contains a description of the short-term consequences of "Nixon shock" and of the New Economic Policy in terms of macroeconomic indicators, rate of inflation and rate of unemployment. The most important long-term consequence of the Nixon shock was the creation of a new monetary system, which is called Jamaica system and is based on floating exchange rates. In the third chapter of this thesis Jamaica monetary system is characterized together with the advantages and disadvantages of floating exchange rates in comparison with fixed exchange rates according to economic theory. The last part is an analysis of the impact of floating exchange rates on the U.S. economy in the 1970 's...
