Martin Nikl, CSc., Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Cukrovarnická 10, 162 00 Prague 6 Abstract: This dissertation thesis is focused on the possibilities of speeding-up the main decay component of selected monocrystalline bulk scintillator via energy transfer toward the acceptor. In the beginning it summarizes the main scintillator characteristics together with their respective measurement methods, as well as several growth methods used for the preparation of the crystals for all the samples characterized further in this thesis. In particular, one chapter is focused on the detailed description of the scintillation decay measurement, because this particular method was much improved during the work on this thesis. The main part is focused on the photoluminescent and scintillation characteristics of codoped YAG:Ce and LuAP:Ce bulk scintillators. Oxide scintillator detectors

The presented thesis focused on the study of a new material concept of Ce3+ doped multicom- ponent aluminum garnets (GdLu)3(GaAl)5O12. High purity single crystalline epitaxial films were grown by the method of liquid phase epitaxy from the BaO-B2O3-BaF2 flux with spe- cial emphasis on the elimination of the potential impurities coming from the flux. Combined experimental study of photoelectron yield (under alpha excitation), decay kinetics of fast and delayed recombination in the milisecond time range (under e-beam excitation) and photo-, cathodo- and radio-luminescence spectroscopies were used to characterize the studied mater- ial. The single-step nonradiative energy transfer from the donor Gd3+ to an acceptor Ce3+ was observed in the low Gd, Ce doped LuAG films and established as long-range dipole - dipole interaction. Special attention was devoted to the positive effect of combined Gd and Ga substitution on the extensive suppression of shallow traps, which are responsible for the slow component in the scintillation response. The best obtained scintillation characteristics of the studied epitaxial films were comparable with the top performance bulk crystals. 1
Nonlinear optical properties of silicon nanostructures

RNDr. František Trojánek, Ph.D. E-mail vedoucího: trojanek@karlov.mff.cuni.cz Abstrakt: Disertační práce se zabývá nelineárními optickými jevy a ultrarychlým vývojem luminis- cence křemíkových nanokrystalů. Pomocí metody optického hradlování signálu (časové rozlišení až 250 fs) porovnáváme ultrarychlý vývoj luminiscence křemíkových nanokrystalů s různými ve- likostmi (v řádu jednotek nanometrů) a také s rozdílnými formami pasivace. Pro nanokrystaly, kde po excitaci dominuje vliv zachytávání nosičů do povrchových stavů nanokrystalu, navrhujeme teoretický popis závislosti rychlosti těchto procesů na vlastnostech nanokrystalů. Dále v práci podrobně zkoumáme působení Augerovy rekombinace, která se projevuje jak v časově rozlišené, tak i v časově integrované emisi vzorků. Experimentální data velmi dobře popisuje námi navržený model na bázi kinetických rovnic. Závěr práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání ultrarychle dohasínající stimulované emise.
