Ernest Hemingway's Fiesta, Francis Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and the Development of Femininity and Masculinity in the 1920s

The main aim of this thesis is the analysis of the characters from Francis Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (1925) and Ernest Hemingway's Fiesta (1926) with a focus on the female protagonists. To fully understand the characters, the work first concentrates on the historical background. The theory primarily centres on the American society living in the 1920s, discusses the term The Lost Generation, provides an overview of the changes the women experienced in relation to the term a New Woman, and examines the real-life models that inspired both authors in creating the female characters. Subsequently, the work analyses female characters according to several themes: social standing, money, appearance, morals, relationships, and power. After the analysis, the problem of masculinity is discussed. At first, the thesis describes the changes in the perception of manliness from the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century and then, the male characters and their view on masculinity is examined in relation to the theoretical background.
Masculinity and its Crisis in the work of E. Hemingway, K. Kesey and Ch. Palahniuk

The diploma thesis sets out to analyse and compare the portrayal of masculinity and its crisis in the novels The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. Firstly, it defines masculinity as gender and it introduces the fundamental theoretical framework for gender analysis. The thesis focuses on gender and its key aspects, the relation of gender and human physiology, the theories of gender acquisition and the basic perspectives of understanding masculinity. After that, the thesis describes the concepts of hegemonic and toxic masculinity, followed by the debate about masculinity crisis as a political category and individual identity. The literary analysis of each novel introduces the life of the author as well as his literary and historical context. Initially, it analyses each male character separately so that it can later conclusively describe the ten examined key aspects of masculinity and its crisis in the novel. After the analysis of each novel, the thesis presents their comparison put in the historical context.
Possible Uses of Camp in Interpretation of Czech Contemporary Cultural Background

Proposed dissertation is focusing on specific eccentric aesthetics based on hyperboles, ambivalent meanings and ironic attitude, which in Anglo-American background is so called camp derived from French. Camp origin can be found on the court of Louis XIV, where we can notice passionate tries to cultivate affected court-style culminating in baroque metaphor of the world as a theatre. Due to impact of modernity and postmodernity, scope of the camp extended to various cultural spheres and phenomenon began to corelate through its eccentricity with common marginality, respectively with something what is different from "normality" and "genuineness" also settled schemes of perception or ways of historical reflection. Goal of proposed dissertation is based on theoretical-historical interpretations to trace mentions of camp (mainly in literature) with focus on Czech background, where its rich interpretational potential can clarify most of social-cultural tendencies.
Ethical aspects of photojournalism with focus on sports

Theoretical part of this bachelor's thesis utilizes relevant scholar literature and interviews with photographers to define ethically disputed aspects of photojournalism such as invasion of privacy, media coverage of crises, depiction of violence, death and nudity, as well as picture manipulation - both before a photography is taken and during postproduction process. The thesis particularly focuses on sports photography and ethically disputed aspects related specifically to this field. Followingly, it lays out the limits of photographic display - which are crucial to discuss in relation to the subject of this text - and the trinity of basic principles regarding ethical decision-making (utilitarian principal, absolutist principal, golden rule) that should be considered by photojournalists and picture editors while publishing images that might be considered ethically controversial. Practical part of this thesis captures youth football team FK Admira Prague during 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons. It shows their training, matches and the backstage of their football world - both its light and dark sides.
Gender roles in fairy tales

Fairy tales have an educational and socialization impact on children. In fairy tales children find answers to questions, problems and situations, that life brings them. Fairy tales reflect true life - people come into the world, fall ill, die, get poorer, steal, get jealous, love and hate to death and they are willing to lay down their life for helping others. A child feels genuineness of story, finds something what it had experienced itself. Children identify themselves with fairy tale characters and their characteristics, heroes of stories are their models. So naturally children create their hierarchy of values, because moral message of fairy tales is clear and that is its advantage for children. Fairy tales interfere in all aspects of life and education. One of the aspects is the area of gender. In my research I presented the children a traditional fairy tale and less traditional fairy tale, where male and female roles are reversed. The aim of the research was to find out how boys and girls perceive the division of roles in fairy tales. I led structured interviews with children and compared the collected data with the gathered theoretical information.
Virtuosity and Performance of Masculinity: Music Ethnography of a Non-Roma Gypsy Jazz Group in Prague

Univerzita Karlova v Praze, Filozofická fakulta Ústav hudební vědy Virtuosity and Performance of Masculinity: Music Ethnography of a Non-Roma Gypsy Jazz Group in Prague Žofie Kašparová 2014 Abstract In this ethnography I examine the gypsy jazz band Sylvanio Orchestra which is based in Prague, Czech Republic. This research consists largely of my observations at their performances, interviews with the band members as well as my personal experience of being a musician and a woman in this predominantly male collective. Thus, this essay is partly an autoethnography. The research focuses on a group of non-Roma musicians which play gypsy jazz music. I describe how their performances work, which consist mostly of jam sessions (participatory performance), and which mechanisms occur in these environments. Virtuosity is one of the main characteristics of the genre and is coupled with a sense of competitiveness. The group appears exclusive from the outside which might be caused by intellectual musical communication codes which outsiders cannot read and which are connected with the virtuosity typical in gypsy jazz. I suggest that virtuosity, competitiveness along with other characteristics of gypsy jazz performance might be perceived as masculine. Gender and Media in the Age of Post-Modernity: Revealing Gender Stereotypes in the Contemporary Czech Advertising Discourse

ENGLISH SUMMARY The main objective of this thesis was to provide a complex perspective on the mutual relationship of gender and media in the age of post-modernity with a special attention to the stereotypical gender portrayal presented to us by the contemporary Czech advertising discourse. We chose to demonstrate this problematics through the methods of semiotic analysis on the analytical sample of 5 advertisements (consisting of selected TV commercials) representing various aspects of stereotypical gender images appearing in the today's Czech advertising contents. We then subjected these selected advertisements to the analytical methods in pursuit of finding the answers to the questions related to the media image of men, women and our society that the stereotypical gender depictions contained in these advertisements help to construct. Although many of these advertisements appear to be openly sexist or even misogynic on the first sight, using the mechanisms of semiotic analysis we came to a rather opposite conclusion proposing the analyzed contents are rather pro-feminine tending toward an extensive masculine critique.
