Vznik Státního archeologického ústavu je spojen s mimořádnou osobností Lubora Niederla, jeho zakladatele a prvního ředitele, jenž formuloval koncepci vědecké práce nové instituce. Začala fungovat na počátku roku 1920 a v prvním desetiletí své existence se potýkala s vážnými finančními a personálními problémy, které omezovaly její činnost. Naplnění Niederlovy koncepce se od třicátých let 20. století věnoval s plným nasazením Jaroslav Böhm, od roku 1939 ředitel Státního archeologického ústavu. Jeho cílem bylo vybudovat ústav jako moderní instituci, která by stála v čele československé archeologie. Po začlenění Státního archeologického ústavu do Československé akademie věd v roce 1953 se Jaroslav Böhm zaměřil na upevnění jeho pozice jako ústředí vědecké a výzkumné práce. Z velké části se zasloužil o to, že se Archeologický ústav v prvních dvou poválečných dekádách zařadil na špičku oboru v mezinárodním měřítku. The establishment of the State Institute of Archaeology is connected with the extraordinary personality of Lubor Niederle, its founder and first director, who formulated the concept of the scientific work of the new institution. It started operating in the early 1920s and in the first decade of its existence faced serious financial and personnel problems that limited its activities. Since the 1930s, Jaroslav Böhm, director of the State Institute of Archaeology since 1939, devoted himself to the fulfillment of Niederle's concept. His goal was to build the institute as a modern institution that would stand at the forefront of Czechoslovak archaeology. After the incorporation of the State Institute of Archaeology into the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1953, Jaroslav Böhm focused on consolidating its position as a center for scientific and research work. He was largely responsible for the fact that the Institute of Archaeology ranked at the top of the field on an international scale in the first two post-war decades.
