Common features of movies integrating the theater phenomenon into their narrative and stylistic structure

The subject of this bachelor thesis is the common features of foreign and czech movies integrating theater phenomenon into their narrative and stylistic structure. For better explanation, firstly, the forms, which are not included in the area of interest are described- the audiovisual record of theater performance, film adaptation of dramatic play, or insertion of theater performance into the movie content. In following chapters, three different movie examples working with theater in their structure are being described and analysed. Then, thesis is trying to find the reasoning for the usage of two different mediums and their mutual comunication as a principle of autorship. Finally, thesis is trying to summarize common thematic and formal characteristics of chosen movies.
Film adaptations of theatrical productions in czech film

In this theoretical thesis I want to explore the interaction of theater and film. I do not want to be preoccupied with "filmed theater", but only with film adaptations of theatrical productions. Dramatic works became really often template for films, but what leads the creators of the movie to film the specific theatrical productions? How will the filmmakers be affected by existing artwork, and which path to take when theater and film have so many different ways of expression? What has the movie theater to offer, and what the film is able to borrow, take, or transform? And in this case,are there any rules?
A film poem of the ordinairy

,,Every work is issued from a script that the artist projects onto culture, considered the framework of a narrative that in turn projects new possible scripts, endlessly." The thesis focuses on the reception of the film "Brief encounter" (1945) in it's historical context, as well as on different approaches to film specific storytelling techniques, and film narration itself, through analysing different adaptations of Noël Cowards one-act play "Still life". The referential framework would be the reception of this film in post-war Czechoslovakia, where the film was thoroughly analysed by film critics. The opinions of the reviewers to the film at this time, when they were calling for a more "filmic" cinematography, were often divided. The same can be said about the somehow disconcerted reception of the audience. By comparing the various sources available from the specified period of time and taking the cultural and social context into account, I would like to come to an understanding not only of the general stance of the film critique in Czechoslovakia at the time, but also the audience, their relationship to this critique and to film in general. I would especially like to use the reviews of Jiří Brdečka, whose texts reflected films and the cultural background in the time of the nationalized cinema. I will not be focusing on the narrative alone, but on its cultural and social relations, which is reflected on the transformation of the story into film language. By comparing the original theater screenplay and the film script then translated to film language, I will try to analyze the specific dramaturgic methods used, focusing especially on the subjective monologue, which acts as an essential storytelling technique in Leans adaptation. Further on I compare David Leans adaptation to the "Brief encounter" remake by Alan Bridges. This analysis should help understanding how the film was accepted at its time and should reveal what the audience and reviewers expected from such a film, may it be regarding the narrative, the formal side of the film, choice of actors and the theme itself. The main goal of the reviewers of the time was to help the audience understand film. The goal of my thesis is to also understand the audience, to which these critiques where addressed.
Theatre Movies

The focus of this bachelor thesis is theatre movies. According to author opinion theatre movies are those which, adapts dramas and at the same time keep certain theatre techniques. The main part explains and describes film methods and their function in the narration. The next shorter part is dedicated to theatre it explores dominant principles and their forms of using. Author continues with brief summarization of differences between film and theatre. In the concluding part author explores two movies that he considers as theatre movies, trying to delineate how theatre methods influence film.
HOW TO FILM A DRAMA

This thesis focuses on film adaptations of theatre productions from the point of view of a film producer. The first part introduces the issue of film adaptations in general - from the historical and critiques's point of view - and brings up author' s idea that in order to produce more than just an archive recording of the production, it's essential to produce a film that can autonomously compete in the film industry. Next it defines "Theatrum Cinematographica", which uses maximum of film principles to transfer a theatre production into a film form while maintaining the main idea and characteristics of the original. The second part defines the work of a producer of independent movies in Czech milieu. The third part of this thesis reports the problem of production and distribution of "Theatrum Cinematographica" and look into the role of it's producer from the pre-production to promotion and distribution of the film. Based on five selected films and interviews with their producers the thesis presents several obstacles and advantages of production of film adaptations of theatre productions.
