Nazi Anti-Semitism Remembered: Jewish Memorials in the SBZ and GDR between the Years 1945-1987
McQuiggan, Sean ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
The thesis is an exploration into the Jewish memorial sites erected in the Soviet Zone of Occupation (SBZ) and German Democratic Republic (GDR) between the years 1945 and 1987. The primary aim of the thesis is to provide a collection of Jewish memorial sites in East Germany during the aforementioned time frame. It uses the theories of French historian Pierre Nora as well a number of other authors to legitimize the importance of these memorial sites. In addition, a typology was created by the author to ensure the proper collection of the memorial sites in order to reflect the research question: how was Nazi anti-Semitism remembered in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) through memorial sites between the years 1945-1987? The thesis is, however, more than just a collection of data. It also provides observations about trends and patterns in Jewish memorialization as well uses a method introduced by Ahenk Yilmaz to examine the individual characteristics of the sites. The thesis concludes that Jewish memorialization in the GDR was primarily a bottom-up approach, a fact that has been overlooked by many researchers in the field. Non-institutionalized political Protest in the GDR and the East Germany: from Montagsdemonstrationen till left- and rightwinged extremism
Fridrich, Tomáš ; Březinová, Monika (advisor) ; Kučera, Jaroslav (referee)
This paper deals with the non-institutionalised political protests in the new federal states beginning of the 1990s. Starting point are the vast experiences, that the population had made with such kinds of demonstrations (massdemonstration of 1989). The paper wants to answer questions with the help of specialist literature dealing with the influence of these experiences on the possibly later non- institutionalised protest and furhter, what kinds of protests one can observe in Eastern Germany during the beginning of the 90s. The 1989-experience is only briefly mentioned in this paper, the core is formed by the analysis of the different non- institutionalised political protest reforms in the new states. The most numerous form of protest appears to be the left- and rightwinged extremism. This paper follows the development which has amounted during the 1990s and mentions certain cases that are connected with extremism. The chapter concerned with rightwinged expremism also deals with its roots of origin that go back to the 1980s. The up-to-dateness of this topic is determined in the last chapter which is concerned with the medial repercussion in the Czech press (journal Respekt).
The Impact of the Fall of the Berlin Wall on RAF
Matějková, Nikola ; Renner, Tomáš (advisor) ; Daňková, Šárka (referee)
The terrorist group Red Army Fraction ("RAF"), which jeopardized the public security with their attacks in West Germany since the seventies and killed more than three thousand people, issued a statement of official closure on April 20, 1998 after 28 years of its activity. This thesis tries to answer the question whether the fall of the Berlin Wall brought the final dissolution of the group. In addition to geopolitical changes it is also necessary to take into account the instruments of the national security policy and the split of opinion within the group. The geopolitical reversal in 1989 had two negative impacts on the RAF. Firstly it meant a devastating ideological defeat for them, even though the former GDR or any other Eastern Bloc country did not respond fully to their expectations. Another shock for them was the arrest of ten former RAF-members who were hiding in the GDR under a false identity. They eventually filed an extensive testimony, so that their sentences could be commuted. Federal Republic of Germany, which had not been too successful in the fight against terrorism up to this time, used the internal weakness of the RAF caused by political circumstances and it finally introduced new instruments to further destabilize the group and led to a rift between prisoners and members at large....
Making moments of history : how the comparison between the 1953 uprising and the 1989 revolution is contributing to a new German story
Boniface, Donna ; Smetana, Vít (advisor) ; Vykoukal, Jiří (referee)
Since reunifying in 1990, Germany has been working to develop an identity that represents the people of the two former German states. At the beginning of the twenty-first century the country still faced unique challenges as it reconciles the stories of the former capitalist and communist states. First, this study investigates the role of nation-building historical narratives and how they developed in the German context. Then it looks at the introduction of the East German uprising of 1953 into the national history of unified Germany and how this event has been used to shape the narrative around the 1989 revolution. Finally, it reflects on the significance of such a comparison for the historiography of the events.
Východní a západní Německo po sjednocení: Analýza mzdových rodílů
Groero, Jaroslav ; Pertold, Filip (advisor) ; Nikolovová, Pavla (referee)
Under socialism workers had their wages set by the central planners.. In my thesis I use panel data from SHARLIFE questionnaire in order to analyze how returns to East German human capital variables changed after the reunification in 1990.I also compare these returns to West German returns to human capital variables. Before 1990 the returns to experience and education were lower in East Germany than in West Germany. After the reunification East German returns to experience obtained before 1990 and to education decreased. I find a significant decrease of returns to high educated workers who spent in the East German educational system 15 and more years. East German returns to both human capital variables are smaller than West German ones before the reunification and the difference is more pronounced after the reunification.
