SMV-2012-02: Research and development of electron guns designed for electron beam welding
Vlček, Ivan ; Zobač, Martin
The subject of the project was the research and development of the electron gun for electron beam welding with accelerating voltage 60 kV and maximal power 2 kW. The improvements in functionality and safety in comparison with the previous versions of the gun were reached according to client requirements. The project, characterized by solving problems from different fields (physics, electronics, mechanics, production technologies, measurement), resulted in the realization of several functional prototypes, which were successfully tested in cooperation with the client.

Institute of Scientific Instruments (ISI) was established in 1957 to develop diverse instrumental equipment for other institutes of the Academy of Sciences. ISI has long experience in research and development of electron microscopes, nuclear magnetic resonance equipment, coherent optics and related techniques. Nowadays the effort concentrates on scientific research in the field of methodology of physical properties of matter, in particular in the field of electron optics, electron microscopy and spectroscopy, microscopy for biomedicine, environmental electron microscopy, thin layers, electron and laser beam welding, electron beam lithography using Gaussian and shaped electron beam, nuclear magnetic resonance and spectroscopy, cryogenics and superconductivity, measurement and processing of biosignals in medicine, non-invasive cardiology, applications of focused laser beam (optical tweezers, long-range optical delivery of micro- and nano-objects) and lasers for measurement and metrology. ISI works both independently and in cooperation with universities, other research and professional institutions and with private companies at national and international level.
Small-Volume Reactive Metal Alloys Prepared by Electron Beam Melting
Zobač, Martin ; Vlček, Ivan ; Zobačová, Jitka ; Rek, Antonín
The paper deals with the preparation of small volumes of reactive metal alloys (particularly titanium), utilizing an electron beam as the heat source. The melting was performed in a vacuum environment in order to prevent the compounds from reacting with atmospheric components. The water-cooled crucible avoids any contamination of the alloy, which would have otherwise arisen during the heating of the materials. The composition of resulting alloys were then investigated by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy

The aim of this contribution is to present the Institute of Scientific Instrument of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, mainly from the potential of applied research viewpoint. It covers mainly the six application fields including material study of metals and alloys, nano layer residual stress observation methods, 2 kW fibre laser, impact testing of hard coatings, e-beam welding, machining and engraving, and finally e-beam lithography. Recently achieved results as well as the new application potential are presented. Furthermore, each topic is assumed to have a separate presentation prepared in more details within this event. A brief overview follows. Scanning low energy electron microscopy (SLEEM) is increasingly becoming recognized as a valuable analytical tool in the field of materials science. The SLEEM is also used for observation of compressive stress in nano layers that leads to wrinkling and film delamination. Using the fibre laser, we can offer 3D laser welding and cutting of various type of materials and laser surface hardening too. For the hard coatings testing and evaluation of their impact resistance a new method was suggested (Dynamic Impact Wear Test). During testing the specimen is cyclically loaded by tungsten carbide ball that impacts of the coating/substrate surface. In house e-beam welding machine allows for welding, machining, engraving and other utilizations of intense electron beam. The group of micro lithography is able to prepare micro and nano structures in thin layers of metals and other materials; including the characterization of the realized structures
Měření elektronově-optických vlastností Wienova filtru stínovou metodou
Horáček, Miroslav ; Vlček, Ivan ; Zobač, Martin
Wien filter is suitable for the separation of the primary and the signal electron beams in very low energy scanning electron microscope with cathode lens. We have modified the two-grid shadow method to determine experimentally electron optical properties (cardinal elements and aberrations) of the Wien filter, which is not a rotationally symmetric element. We call the modified method the shadow method with grid and moving screen. The advantage of the shadow method is its geometrical simplicity allowing the comparison of the experimentally obtained and numerically computed trajectories.
Svařování elektronovým svazkem v ÚPT: Minulost a současnost
Zobač, Martin ; Vlček, Ivan
The paper deals with the history of an electron beam welding in the Institute of Scientifics Instruments in Brno, Czech republic. The description starts with the oldest technological e-beam device - multifunction vacuum furnace - dated from 1965, describes development of electron beam welders and introduces the newest instrument - Micro Electron Beam Welder MEBW-60/2, which was recently designed for German company Focus GmbH.
Mikroobrábění elektronovým svazkem
Dupák, Libor ; Zobač, Martin
The paper describes experimental device for electron beam micromachining as well as some experiments. The device itself is derived from electron beam welding machine SES-1 developed at ISI Brno. Using this device, several types of materials as stainless steel, titanium, quartz glass, ceramics and some plastics were drilled.
Development of the Electron beam micromachining device
Zobač, Martin
The paper describes micromachining with an intense electron beam. Main goal is a study of the electron beam interaction with metallic and/or nonmetallic materials. Design of vacuum system, electron gun and electronics of the experimental device is introduced.
Micro-machining by an electron beam
Zobač, Martin
The work deals with problems of removing material with an intensive electron beam (EB) in vacuum. The main goal is study of the interaction of EB with metallic and possibly non-metallic materials. An undividable part of the work is a preparation of an experimental device, its experimental parts and the electron gun. It will be necessary to create a unique electronics, especially a HV source enabling impulse operation of the electron gun.
