Early medieval crypts in Bohemia

This thesis is devoted to early medieval crypts in Bohemia. It aims to create a catalog the early medieval crypts in the Czech until the end of the 13th century. It analyzes the existing literature on crypts in the Czech Republic, crypt functions in the Medieval Church, the presence or the absence of crypts in the architecture of the Benedictine and Cistercian monastic orders. Also it characterizes the typology of medieval crypts. This thesis describes ten early medieval buildings, from the oldest to the newest ones: the crypt of Břevnov Monastery, the crypt of basilica of Saint Wenceslas in Stará Boleslav, the crypt of the Sázava Monastery, crypts of Spytihněv's basilica in the Prague Castle, the crypt of the Doksany monastery, the crypts of Basilica of St. George in the Prague Castle, the crypt of the Hradiště nad Jizerou Monastery, the crypt of Teplice Monastery, the crypt of the church of Saint Gall in Poříčí nad Sázavou and the crypt of the St. Stephen's church in Kouřim.

Church of Protection of the Mother of God of Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Moscow

The subject of the master's thesis is the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Moscow, the early work from 1908-1912, which has not drawn attention in the Czech scientific literature. A special chapter is devoted to the history of the Marfo- Mariinsky Convent, its founder Grand Duchess Elizabeth and her personality and conventual life. The church is described in an analytical way as a specific Gesamtkunstwerk, which unites architecture, interior decoration, sculptural decorations and iconography. The analysis and the interpretation of the church focus on references to the traditional Russian architecture. Two chapters distinctively explain the place, which the church takes in Alexey Viktorovich Shchusev's and Mikhail Vasilyevich Nesterov's numerous works. The thesis contains documents of the church and exterior and interior photos.

Proper Names and Toponyms in Czech and Russian Translation of The Lord of the Rings

(in English): This bachelor's thesis compares translations of proper names and toponyms in the Czech and a chosen Russian versions of J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The aim is to uncover the original meaning behind the names in the English version of the novel and to explain the logic behind the translators' decisions when trying to convey the meaning. The work also examines theoretical questions of translating proper names and toponyms, and gives opinions of a number of specialists in the field describing some of the existing methods of translation. Based on statistical data and diagrams, it compares the Czech and Russian approach to translating and reveals which methods of translation (e.g. word-for-word translation, transcription etc.) the translators prefered and where the translations were not appropriate. Part of the work is devoted to a general comparison and evaluation of the given translations.
