Activities Developing the Fluency of the Oral Production and the Point of View of Students and Teachers

(in English): The productions of language of the students learning Czech or other foreign languages may be evaluated in light of three criteria - the accuracy, the fluency and the complexity. The improvement of the quality of each of these can be influenced by a variety of factors, inter alia, personality of the student, the topic, the possibility to prepare before the production and so on, but also by student's language competence or the didactical methods used to reach this level of competence. In this master thesis, the main focus will be placed on the fluency, more precisely on the methods, which are contributing to its development; Rather than focusing on their effectiveness, the scrutiny will analyze the attitude of students as well as the teachers towards each of those methods. Also, we compare, how the preferred aspect (accuracy or fluency) influence the evaluation of the methods and, in the end, if and how the evaluation of the activities is being influenced by the students' level of language. Within questioning we obtained data from teachers and students of Czech as a foreign language. With them, we verified the role of the factors above for the respondends evaluations. Principles of Initialization in Formation of Anthroponyms in Czech Sign Language

This bachelor's thesis analyses the formal aspects of initialization in formation of anthroponyms in Czech sign language. The main objective is to describe how the initials are modified in comparison to the manual alphabet. The first part of the thesis is more focused on theory. Firstly, it deals with the topic of proper nouns in spoken Czech, focus being anthroponyms (especially given names and surnames). Then the author focuses on the topic of initialization and related terminology (two approaches to initialization, local lexicalization, single manual letter signs etc.) and manual alphabet. After that, based on the diploma thesis by Radka Faltínová (2005), the author describes the most common types of name signs in Czech sign language. The material used in the research part of this thesis was taken from the news programme in Czech sign language (Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce) because of the high concentration of anthroponyms. The development and variation of selected prepositional phrases in contemporary Czech

This doctoral dissertation is concerned with the dynamic processes that are at play in the development of the system of prepositions in contemporary Czech. In the first part, I review different treatments of prepositions as a word class in the Czech linguistic tradition. I use available descriptive accounts to discuss the features of two main subtypes of this category, i.e. primary and secondary prepositions, focusing in particular on the process of 'prepositionalization' of secondary prepositions, i.e. the grammaticalization path that leads to their emergence. The primary focus of the first part of the dissertation is the role of meaning and the semantic features of prepositions as function words, as well as the meaning which prepositions contribute to more complex linguistic items, i.e. the interrelation of prepositions and case marking and valency patterns derived from verbs. I also draw attention to prefixed words which are, in the majority of cases, derived from primary prepositions. I approach meaning mainly from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, employing also the view of construction grammar which treats prepositions both as constructions in their own right and as parts of higher order constructions. Czech sign language vocabulary in a specific area of linguistic terminology

The thesis aims to describe selected signs of Czech Sign Language used for linguistic terminology. Based on academic literature the first section explains the terminology as part of the lexicon and the specific position it has in signed languages. The focus is on linguistic terminology used in the Deaf Studies programme at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University including its metalinguistic aspect. The research section presents selected Czech Sign Language signs used for instruction in the Deaf Studies programme. The formal and semantic motivation of signs is analysed, i.e. the word-formation principles (such as arbitrariness, iconicity, calquing etc.). In case of the incidence of two variants, their form and relation is delineated. The research material is comprised of video tapes of native Czech Sign Language user in real class instruction and spoken language instruction interpreted into Czech Sign Language. Collected data might serve as a guideline for terminology unification in the field of sign linguistics and in class instruction, as well as in training of new interpreters at the Institute of Deaf Studies, alternatively in instruction of deaf pupils. Signs for the Prague metro stations: formal and semantic motivations

(in English): The bachelor thesis 'Signs for the metro stations: formal and sematic motivations' focuses on signs for the underground stations in the czech sign language especially from creating these signs point of view. The theoretical section is about explanation of needed terms for understanding the meaning (iconicity, composition, inicialization, loan translation etc.), the practical section finds out the form of signs of all metro stations with the help of the intended interviewing deaf community. Each sign is examined by motivational aspect and formal formation. If there is a presence of multiple names for one station, the names are compared. The objective of the thesis is making the partial analysis of the sign-forming system for this defined proprietary-names section. Aquired visual material is part of the thesis as well.

The Audio Course as the Means of Teaching Czech as a Foreign Language

This thesis concerns audio courses as the means of teaching of foreign languages. In the theoretical part, it deals with historical context of language audio courses. By way of describing the development of teaching methods (grammar-translation method, direct method and audio-lingual method in particular), it presents main principles of audio courses. Due to the main target group of language audio courses in general and also the audio course of Czech for foreigners that was created as a project to this thesis, it also deals with A1 language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In the practical part, it concerns with analysis of three audio courses - the Berlitz's Češkij jazyk: bazovyj kurs, the Pimsleur's Speak and Read Essential Czech and the new project audio course. Portrayal of d/Deaf People in Cinematography

The bachelor's thesis analyzes the topic of deaf people and deafness in feature-length motion pictures made by hearing directors. At the beginning of this thesis the author focuses on the terminology concerning deaf people, the relationship between art and deaf people and deafness, brief history of cinematography with the accent on important events concerning deaf people and deafness and then the author focuses on influence of movies on public opinion with the accent on terms stereotype, prototype and myth. Author afterwards focuses on analysis of the selected sample of movies. There are two types of analysis in this thesis, first one looks into purpose of the topic in those movies, the second one analyzes chosen movies in detail. The second analysis ends with comparison and evaluation of those movies. The purpose of this thesis is to make first insight into the topic of deaf and deafness in feature-length motion pictures made by hearing directors.

The Dog in Linguistic Picture of the World in Czech

I. Abstract This paper is based on the theoretical principes of the Polish ethnolinguistic works introduced in the first part of this paper. We pay special attention to the theory of anthropocentrism of a natural language. The main focus of this theory is the differentiation between "one's own" and "human" on one side and "someone else's" and "non-human"on the other in a cognitive comprehension of the world. We further apply the anthropocentric approach to outline the conceptualization of domestic animals in the Czech language. The second part of the text deals with the expression pes (‚dog') in Czech and its derivatives, their position within the lexical system, their semantics, connotations and the stereotypes associated with them. The conclusion presents a cognitive definition of the concept pes (‚dog') in Czech. The definition builds upon the entry structure of the Polish Dictionary of Folk Stereotypes and Symbols.
