Reconstruction of the Development of Voegelin's Idea of Totalitarian Rule
Petrová, Eliška ; Německý, Marek (advisor) ; Minářová, Markéta (referee)
The thesis "Reconstruction of the Development of Voegelin's Idea of Totalitarian Rule" traces the evolution of Eric Voegelin's understanding of totalitarian governance. Voegelin is noteworthy as an anti-Nazi political theorist, a native German who was compelled to emigrate from Vienna to the USA due to his views, where he continued his studies on totalitarianism. His concept of totalitarianism is examined primarily through the Nazi regime of the Third Reich and its critique. The work is divided into three parts: the first part derives the conception of totalitarianism primarily from Voegelin's work in the pre-war and war periods; the second follows the development of his views post-war; the third part compares Voegelin's views with those of the Nazi philosopher Carl Schmitt. This comparison reveals contrasting perspectives on Nazism, totalitarianism, and political power, providing deeper insight into the diversity of theoretical stances towards totalitarian systems of the era. By examining the views of these ideologically opposed authors, we can envisage what the intellectual debate about political systems might have looked like during World War II. Beyond political systems, Voegelin's views also touch upon contemporary society and long-term trends within it, such as the decline of faith. The...
The Country Image of The Czech Republic from the Perspective of Japanese
Oka, Kohei ; Marková, Alena (advisor) ; Minářová, Markéta (referee)
The question of this study is how the Japanese imagine the Czech Republic. The aim of this study is to clarify the factors that constitute the image of the Czech Republic through the interview survey. It is apparent that, overall, the respondents do not have an image of the Czech Republic as economically developed. On the other hand, there is a tendency for respondents to consider working conditions and the level of education to be good or at least above a certain level. With regard to security, more people imagine that the Czech Republic is safe than those who imagine that the Czech Republic is not safe. Most respondents also indicated that the Czech Republic has an image of ethnic diversity. The image of Czechs' character is frequently expressed with words such as serious, diligent, hard-working, honest, calm, and laid-back. Many respondents imagined the Czech Republic as a comfortable country to live in. The two factors that seemed to influence the formation of the Czech image in this interview survey are "culture and arts" and "historical background," which includes Eastern Europe, socialism and communism, Russia and the Soviet Union. The "culture and art" factor evoked positive images such as "beautiful," "admired," and "high standard," while the "historical background" factor evoked negative...

"Stay Safe/Stay United/Stay In Touch" - Experiential communitas, belonging, and participation in Prague's electronic dance music scene during the COVID-19 pandemic
Gere, Nóra ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Minářová, Markéta (referee)
With the social distancing measures related to COVID-19, the party life in the Czech Republic went through major changes. Offline parties were no longer possible within the governmental framework. Practices that previously were self-evident became impossible to maintain. Attendees were pushed to rely on the online possibilities of scene participation or invent novel modes to stay connected. Through an analysis of both online and offline participation, this paper examines how their sense of community and belonging to the electronic dance music (EDM) scene changed during the pandemic. The data was collected via multiple methods. The core of the research is semi-structured interviews, fieldnotes, and netnography. Moreover, data from an online questionnaire was used to triangulate and thicken the findings. This research aimed to outline the core features of a party and the attendees' practices and values that construct or re-enforce belonging and feeling of community. For the analysis, a theoretical framework building on the concepts of communitas by Victor Turner and connectedness by Tim Olaveson was used. The data revealed that a good event heavily relies on the corporeal and physical. Therefore, the term experiential communitas was introduced as a concept which describes this special, sensory-...

Azzaoui, Oumaima ; Černý, Karel (advisor) ; Minářová, Markéta (referee)
Identity and Euroscepticism at odds with EU institutions and Grand Strategy. Abstract: During a very volatile time in which uncertainty ranks high, the EU faces a multitude of challenges in pursuit of maintaining its hold with the state members, promote and overlook the continuity of its interests both continentally and on an international level, all while overlooking the constituent members' economic, diplomatic and political sectors. Under such pretense, many questions arise on how the EU handles all of this, for that specifically I composed this thesis that combines different topics in different fields to have a better understanding at where the EU is heading as an international organization. Identity is a driving factor in identifying and self-categorizing with the EU for all of elites, citizens and even corporate bodies. Another phenomenon that can be brought up when speaking of identity is Euroscepticism where identity can have unbalanced grounds after a streak of crises that the EU has gone through, and last Grand Strategy as an academic field is most interesting to understand the EU's strategic initiatives. All of these can be looked at through the EU's institutional framework that provides a compelling basis to understand the EU as a whole. Keywords: EU - Union - Euroscepticism - Identity - Grand...
Legislature related to legionnaires and war veterans between 1918 and 1922 - its illustration in parliamentary debates and printed media
Hainzová, Petra ; Štemberk, Jan (advisor) ; Minářová, Markéta (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze post-war legislation related to legionnaires and injured war veterans as it was debated in parliament and reported on in standard media outlets. The analyzed period is from 1918 to 1922. The thesis will also strive to compare the legislatively preferred legions with regular soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army. Research will be conducted using minutes from parliament's sessions and selected newspapers and magazines. The analysis will show that laws intended for the legions' benefit did not have a great impact in real life and were often not upheld according to parliament sessions and printed media. The difficult circumstances of the legionnaires who arrived back home later than regular troops, did not particularly interest the general population any longer, as the post-war situation was hard for everyone.

Moreover, data from an online questionnaire was used to triangulate and thicken the findings. While outlining their practices and values that construct, or re-enforce belonging and feeling of community, I provided a critical reading of Olaveson's (2004) theory of "connectedness as collective effervescence/communitas" to see whether it can be a workable frame to analyse the party attendees' scene-related experiences in the extreme conditions of a pandemic. My research revealed that participants simultaneously utilized and relied on the possibilities of both the online and the offline places....
